Does anything show up the ridiculousness of pitcher “wins” more than what happened to Tommy Hanson  (now 8-8 on the season) today? He was outstanding, striking out five and walking just one in 7 1/3, throwing 66 strikes in 92 pitches. But in the fifth inning, he allowed a one-out single, followed by a two-out “triple” that was a soft fly ball down the line to right. Heyward  screwed up on the play, trying to make a diving catch that he couldn’t, misplaying a double that probably would not have scored a run (with a catcher running, even with two out) into the triple. Then Alex Gonzalez, defensive shortstop, misplayed an absolutely routine ball allowing a second run to score.

Ballgame, because of the Braves’ terrible work with runners on base. They had only one hit with runners in scoring position, that an infield single by Omar in the first that only moved Conrad to third base with one out. McCann popped up to blow that chance. Their only run came on a solo homer by Gonzalez in the second. After the fourth inning, the third time in the game that the Braves stranded two men, I wrote, “We’re going to lose”. And we did.

The Braves had only four hits, but drew seven walks and had a HBP. Eleven men were stranded, five times two in one inning. Heyward doubled with two out in the ninth, and was, of course, stranded. It’s going to happen with a high-walk, low-power offense sometimes, but you have to execute better than this. Hanson has pitched brilliantly in each of his last two starts, but the defense and offense have let him down both times and he’s 0-2. He just doesn’t know how to get the other guys to be competent win.

Aggiungo solo una cosa: se degli otto hitters nel lineup, cinque sono al massimo replacement/platoon players non c'è da sorprendersi se in attacco si fa fatica; sperando che la dirigenza non creda di aver risolto i problemi con le aggiunte di Gonzo e Ankiel.

Da stanotte serie casalinga contro i Mets; prima sfida tra Santana e Hudson.

In qualche modo si riesce a vincere la prima sfida contro i Mets, al termine di una gara non troppo diversa dalle precedenti: il 3/16 RISP e i 9 LOB non sono una novità, a differenza dei ben 13 strikeouts subiti (11 del solo Santana in 7 IP). Partita solida ma non proprio eccellente di Hudson (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB e 3 K) costretto ad uscire dopo sei riprese e 107 lanci (67 strikes): la vera sorpresa sono soprattutto i 10 FO a fronte di 5 GO, anche se l'RBI-double di Beltran è l'unica hit colpita veramente duramente. Per Huddy anche un doppio e 2 errori; solito lavoro favoloso del bullpen che con Venters, Saito e Wagner chiude il match senza problemi nel finale.

In attacco da segnalare le buone prove di Infante (2/5 e 1 R) e Diaz (2/4, 1 R e 1 RBI) che si conferma vera bestia nera di Santana; prima hit e primi RBI per Rick Ankiel in maglia Braves. Concludo segnalando che per ben 3 volte un lead-off double non è stato concretizzato, nel secondo, terzo e sesto inning.

Martin Prado finisce, come prevedibile, in DL e al suo posto viene chiamato Diory Hernandez.

Questa notte sfida ostica sulla carta, quella che vedrà opposti Lowe e Dickey.

Il periodo nero continua, poco da dire: in attacco la squadra non batte niente e con RISP si sta sfiorando il ridicolo. Nella gara di ieri si finisce 0/8 con 10 LOB, solo 6 valide battute e sette BB sprecate; le 2 runs sono piuttosto occasionali e sulla seconda Francoeur fa un bel regalo, trasformando un singolo fortunoso di Melky in un triplo. L'unico a salvarsi tra gli hitters è Chipper in virtù delle 3 BB incassate, per il resto vuoto totale. Troy Glaus, PH double-play ieri.

Questa volta è il turno di Lowe di veder sprecata una buona partenza (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB e 3 K), la prima del 2010 senza walks: bel ritorno di Farnsworth, diciamo che ha ripreso da dove aveva lasciato qualche anno fa (una BB a Frenchy in 4 lanci non è cosa da tutti i giorni).

Per chiudere: fa sorridere che la W vada a Manny Acosta e l'HR decisivo sia di Francoeur, comunque complimenti a loro.

Si ritorna, finalmente, a vincere una serie anche se le pessime tendenze offensive dell'ultimo periodo sono tutt'altro che dimenticate: metà delle runs segnate sono unearned per effetto dei 4 errori della difesa dei Mets e, come al solito, la concretezza non è di casa ad Atlanta (1/9 RISP e 8 LOB) anche considerando con i 3 fuoricampo battuti portano a casa il minimo delle runs.

Nel lineup, comunque, eccellenti le prove di Chipper (3/4, 2 RBI e 1 BB) e, soprattutto, di McCann (3/5 con 1 HR, 2 doppi e 3 RBI) che approfittano in pieno della giornata storta di Pelfrey; tra le altre cinque valide di squadra, due portano la firma di Infante, mentre Melky batte il quarto HR stagionale che fissa il risultato definitivo nell'ottavo inning.

Prestazione sfortunata per Medlen, che verosimilmente chiude qui la sua stagione, costretto ad uscire dopo 4.1 IP avendo concesso 2 ER e 4 hits: Dunn, Moylan, Saito e Farnsworth completano le ultime riprese concedendo qualche BB di troppo, con l'australiano che rimedia anche una unearned run nel settimo.

Da stanotte al via la serie da quattro partite contro San Francisco, si inizia con Lincecum@Jurrjens.

Doveva essere un pitchers' duel e, leggendo il risultato finale, sembra sia stato così: in realtà è stato un festival di occasioni mancate da entrambi gli attacchi (1/16 RISP combinato) con Jurrjens, in particolare, autore di una brutta partenza. Per lui alla fine arriva la vittoria, ma 7 hits (di cui ben 5 doppi), 3 BB e 3 K in 6 IP sono numeri appena mediocri in una partita in cui ha rischiato quasi ogni inning di concedere runs: gran prova di Venters in rilievo (2 K e 1 GO to the mound in 8 lanci) seguito dall'altrettanto brillante Saito (1-2-3 in 11 pitches), prima che Wagner rischi di brutto nel nono (linea di Renteria bloccata dallo stesso Wagner e 2-runs HR sfiorato da Sanchez prima del definitivo K).

Prestazione anonima dell'attacco contro un buon Lincecum che paga carissimo due fuoricampo cortissimi concessi a Gonzalez e Hinske; buona prova di Infante (2/4) che sembra diventato caldo al momento giusto dopo l'infortunio di Martin Prado.

Questa notte seconda sfida della serie, Zito@Hanson.

Come già anticipato, stagione finita per Medlen il cui eventuale intervento chirurgico verrà valutato nelle prossime settimane: al suo posto è stato chiamato Cristhian Martinez da Gwinnett. La partenza di lunedì vedrà invece l'esordio di Mike Minor (che ha lanciato 1.2 innings ieri sera) che rimpiazzerà Kawakami, tolto dalla naftalina e mandato a recuperare la stamina perduta in AAA.

Sempre a proposito di futuri Hall of Famers, qualche numero di Chipper Jones.

Sconfitta tutto sommato meritata contro un ottimo Zito che chiude la sua prova con 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB e 10 K; le uniche due runs arrivano via HR (solo-shot, of course) ma per il resto è pressochè perfetto. Hanson dal canto suo continua ad avere una discreta sfortuna concedendo l'unica run della sua bella prova (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 IBB e 3 K) dopo un singoletto di Torres e due stolen bases e quando si ruba terza non riesco a non pensare che un po' di complicità l'abbia il catcher. Discreta prova del bullpen prima che due errori della difesa nel nono brucino la salvezza di Wagner (che ci mette del suo colpendo il leadoff man); la parola fine al match la mette Cox lasciano sul monte un Moylan palesemente fuori controllo, ma d'altro canto visto lo stato attuale del lineup e l'ottima prova dei rilievi dei Giants la partita rischiava di durare un'eternità prima che si riuscisse a segnare.

Sembra un disco rotto, ma l'attacco continua ad essere il principale assente ingiustificato in queste settimane (0/5 RISP, 6 LOB e 2/15 BB/SO): bravissimo Chipper (3/5, 1 doppio e 1 HR) ma giocando da solo era difficile sperare di più. Non voglio esprimere ancora alcun giudizio, ma pensare che Ankiel sia un upgrade rispetto a Melky in CF (come scritto da molte parti) mi risulta piuttosto difficile in questo momento: felicissimo, ovviamente, di sbagliarmi.

Questa notte la sfida tra Cain e Hudson rischia pericolosamente di finire come il match di ieri.

Com'era prevedibile, è ancora un grande pitchers' duel a caratterizzare il terzo atto della sfida contro San Francisco: dopo la partita di ieri il totale delle runs segnate dalle due squadre raggiunge quota 13 in 29 innings. Questa volta sono i Braves a festeggiare, grazie soprattutto alla fantastica partenza di Hudson (8 IP, 3 H, 1 BB e 6 K) che lancia un perfect game fino al quinto e condede qualcosina solamente nel finale: Schierholtz, nel sesto, è l'unico FO del match, visto che i rimanenti 23 outs sono K (sei) e GO (diciassette), tra cui 2 DP. Ventisettesima S in grande stile per Wagner, 11 lanci e 3 K nel nono.

Per una volta l'attacco si dimosta cinico e sfrutta l'unica vera occasione per sbloccare il risultato nel quarto inning, grazie a Glaus (:shocking:) che esce dal suo colossale slump trovando il 2-runs single che rompe l'equilibrio; per lui anche due GIDP negli altri 2 AB. Altre due valide per Chipper che si conferma l'hitter più caldo, mentre è interessante segnalare gli zero at-bat di Hinske (BB, IBB e HBP) che trova comunque il modo di segnare 1 run.

Salvo ripensamenti direi proprio di sì: motivi familiari.

Nel frattempo si chiude con una vittoria la serie contro San Francisco (3-1 il risultato finale, 8 runs concesse in 38 IP): partenza discreta di Lowe (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB e 2 K), costretto ad uscire nel sesto a causa dei crampi, che deve ringraziare la buona difesa alle sue spalle che lo salva in un paio di occasioni (nonostante il doppio E di Glaus e Infante nel sesto). Buona prova per il bullpen nonostante il fuoricampo concesso da Moylan; 3 K e prima salvezza stagionale per Saito nel nono.

Prova finalmente positiva di tutto l'attacco (solo Ankiel non arriva in base) nonostante il lineup-B schierato da Cox (fuori Chipper, Mac e Heyward): primo fuoricampo stagionale per Ross, mentre Melky, Gonzalez, Diaz e Conrad chiudono con 9 valide complessive. Omar Infante allunga la sua hitting-streak a quota 11 (ad una gara dal suo record di 12 datato 2002) che comprende 7 multi-hit games.

Oggi si lascia il Turner Field per volare in Texas per la serie di 3 match contro gli Astros: questa notte esordio in MLB per Mike Minor, impegnato contro Bud Norris.

A pathetic act of baseball vandalism. Mike Minor  pitched pretty well, but the defense was atrocious, and his luck wasn’t much better. He, at least, got a no-decision. The team wasn’t that lucky. If this game was a player, it would be Jeff Francoeur.

Minor breezed through the first three innings, and had a 2-0 lead entering the fourth after Gonzalez doubled in Ankiel with two out in the first (Minor should have scored Gonzalez with a single in his first major league PA, but was thrown out by the right fielder when the first baseman stood on top of the plate) and a homer, his first in forever, by Heyward.

The fourth was one of those innings that shows why BABIP is important and why strikeouts are the best kind of out. The Astros had four hits, three of them doubles, to score three runs, and none of the balls was hit really hard; the first two RBI came on a pop fly behind first base that a non-paraplegic first baseman (that is, not Troy Glaus) might have had, and a flare to center that went, maybe, 80 feet. It was sad.

Chipper and McCann put the Braves back in front in the sixth, Chipper doubling to lead off and Brian following with a long homer that did not move the leadoff man to third base with one out. That’s just not sound fundamental baseball. After that, virtually nothing went right.

In the bottom of the inning, the leadoff man reached on Minor’s only walk, then stole second (a good throw would have had him) and went to third on a weak grounder. Bobby brought the infield in, which I hate, but it worked, the ball being a soft grounder right to AAG, who booted it. Run scores.

Minor was out of the game in the seventh for a pinch-hitter; Chipper’s broken-bat fly ball with two out and two on was a little too hard to fall. And in the bottom of the inning, the Astros scored six runs after Bobby made the mistake — AGAIN — of bringing in Kyle Farnsworth. Farnsworth shouldn’t even be allowed in the state of Texas. By the time he was out of the game, a run was in, only one out had been recorded, Farnsworth had been charged with a throwing error on a routine soft throw that wasn’t even really a pickoff play that Glaus completely botched, and the bases were still loaded.

Peter Moylan didn’t retire anyone either. By the time he was out of the game, five runs had scored, three of them charged to Farnsworth, and the Astros had cleared the bases on a single to left field when McCann caught Hinske’s sad attempt at a play at the plate and threw it into the left field corner. The only thing that inning was good for was to burn calories for Hinske. The game went on for a few innings after that but there was no real reason for it.

Discreto esordio di Minor, sicuramente non fortunato (il quarto inning è da mani nei capelli) e sicuramente non aiutato dalla difesa; sono proprio i tanti errori degli interni che stanno facendo i danni maggiori in questo periodo. Al momento le trades di Gonzo e Farnsworth/Ankiel fanno ridere, e non poco.
