NBA Veteran Byron Scott Named Head Coach of Cleveland Cavaliers

CLEVELAND, OH - July 1, 2010 - The Cleveland Cavaliers have named 26-year NBA veteran Byron Scott as the team’s new head coach, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today from Quicken Loans Arena, in downtown Cleveland.

Coach Scott, 49, played in the NBA for 14-years, primarily with the Los Angeles Lakers where he participated in winning three championships in 11 seasons with the team. After retiring from the NBA, Coach Scott played one season overseas (1997-98), winning a championship for Pananthinaikos in Greece.

He then went on to coach 12 seasons in the NBA, 10 of them as a head coach. After two seasons (1998-2000) in Sacramento as an assistant to Kings’ Head Coach Rick Adelman, Byron was named head coach of the New Jersey Nets where he led the franchise to back-to-back Eastern Conference Championships and back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in his 2nd and 3rd seasons as the Nets’ head coach.

Coach Scott has the 8th highest career playoff game appearances as a player and head coach combined in NBA history and is within 15 more playoff game appearances from moving to ranking 4th in NBA history. In addition, Coach Scott’s .579% winning career playoff percentage is the 4th highest among all current NBA head coaches. trailing only Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich and Stan Van Gundy.

“Byron’s combination of high-level success and depth of experience, both as a head coach and as a player, is a tremendous asset for our organization. He is a strong leader with a proven track record of winning in both the regular season and the playoffs. We’re confident Coach Scott will positively impact the strong culture we have put in place here in Cleveland over the past five years.” said Cavs General Manager Chris Grant. “We’re very excited for Coach Scott to get started. His experience and leadership will be a critical element in our drive to achieve the franchise’s ultimate goal.”

After four seasons with New Jersey, Coach Scott was hired by the New Orleans Hornets where he improved the Hornets by 38 wins, from a lowly 18 victories in 2004-05 to a 56-win campaign just three years later in 2007-08. This win total is the New Orleans’ franchise record and earned Coach Scott the Red Auerbach trophy as the 2007-08 NBA Coach of the Year. Coach Scott also led the Hornets to an appearance in the Western Conference Semifinals that same season, as well as leading the Western Conference All-Star Team as its head coach in the NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans where, ironically, the west lost to the eastern conference, and its All-Star Game MVP, LeBron James.

In his second year with the Hornets during the 2005-06 season, Coach Scott guided the Hornets to a 38-44 record, an NBA best 20-game win improvement from his first season in New Orleans, despite Hurricane Katrina displacing the team from its hometown and forcing the Hornets to play in four different home arenas throughout the 2005-06 campaign. Coach Scott followed the 2007-08 effort by leading the Hornets to 49 regular season wins and back to the playoffs in 2008-09.

Prior to his stint in New Orleans, Coach Scott led the New Jersey Nets to the most successful run in franchise history. In his first season in 2000-01, he spearheaded rebuilding a New Jersey team with a 26-56 record before guiding them to a franchise-high and Eastern Conference best 52-30 record followed by the Nets’ first-ever trip to the NBA Finals in 2001-02. The 26-win improvement marked the sixth-largest year-to-year improvement in NBA history and the team also won its first Atlantic Division title in franchise history. Scott also earned head coaching honors for the 2002 Eastern Conference All-Stars. (Coach Scott is one of just six coaches to earn the honor for both conferences)

The following season (2002-03) he guided the Nets back to the NBA Finals after winning a second consecutive Atlantic Division title.

“I want to thank Chris Grant and Dan Gilbert and the entire ownership group for this great opportunity. In meeting with Dan and Chris I could tell they have a solid team and family approach to everything and that really impressed me,” said the Cavaliers’ new skipper, Byron Scott. “The deeper we got into these discussions, the better I felt about the situation. This is a great job and an impressive organization and I am very happy to be a part of it. Everything about it just felt like a really good fit for both me and the team. I am anxious to get going and to build on the success the Cavaliers have experienced in recent years."

Prior to his successful coaching career, the Inglewood, California native enjoyed an outstanding NBA playing career. Selected 4th overall in the first round of the 1983 NBA Draft, by the San Diego Clippers, Scott played 14 seasons with three different teams (the Lakers, Indiana Pacers and Vancouver Grizzlies), winning three NBA titles with the Lakers in 1985, 1987 and 1988 as a key starter on the Lakers famed ‘Showtime’ era teams.

In 1,073 games (717 starts), the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 14.1 points on .482 shooting, 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 28.1 minutes per game. In 183 postseason games (122 starts), he posted career playoff averages of 13.4 points on .482 shooting, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 29.3 minutes per game. Coach Scott has been a consistent winner as both a player and a coach. In his 14-year playing career, Scott experienced 12 winning seasons and his team reached the playoffs in 13 of those 14 seasons.

The Cavaliers new head coach attended Arizona State, where he finished his career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,752 points. As a senior, he was named First Team All-Pac 10 after averaging 21.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

Off the court, Coach Scott’s non-profit organization, The Byron Scott Children’s Fund, has raised more than $6 million dollars over the past decade, with the proceeds going to various children’s charities.

Byron and his wife, Anita, have three children: Thomas, LonDen and DaRon.

Byron Scott wants LeBron James to know the Cleveland Cavaliers will run

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Byron Scott has played and coached a lot of places in his NBA career that stretches back 27 years. But there are a few core values from his Los Angeles home that apply directly to his new job in Cleveland as head coach of the Cavaliers.

One is personal and the other is basketball strategy, but they both apply to the Cavs and especially LeBron James.

Scott is a Showtime-era Laker, the 1980s-era up-tempo squads that put up lots of points and owned the NBA. The other is that he's a three-time champion who won his rings in his hometown, literally, as he grew up a short distance from where the Lakers used to play in Inglewood, Calif.

Scott, who signed a four-year contract for about $18 million depending on bonuses with the Cavs on Friday, wants to pass both to James and the Cavs.

"There's nothing like winning at home, I won three titles in my hometown and there's not a better feeling," Scott said after he was introduced as Cavs coach Friday at Cleveland Clinic Courts.

"My last 5-6 years (of coaching), I used a Princeton (offense) style but I can't let go of my roots. We're going to be a running team, I think it is something that we can do."

The Cavs did like Scott's background as being a winner on numerous teams as a player and coach and his ability to communicate with star players and role players alike. Cavs general manager Chris Grant said the team also appreciated his defensive background, which was a result of having been schooled by Pat Riley.

But the message that Scott made clear is that he wants to run. Over the last five years the Cavs have been a defense-first and it has often come at the expense of offensive development. Scott seems to want to change that and incorporate James' talents more.

"We know how great of a basketball player he is and I think he has room to grow," Scott said. "He has a high ceiling and that ceiling has not been tapped."

Scott said the last few weeks have been interesting and that he thought earlier this week that he had lost out to Lakers assistant Brian Shaw for the job. But he said he was excited when the Cavs called back.

"I thought this was a home run for me," Scott said. "To be put in this situation with a team that has a chance to win right away."

Scott has already hired Paul Pressey to be his lead assistant, filling the same role Pressey did for Scott when both were with the New Orleans Hornets. He said he's still working on the rest of the staff.

"I think this team is right there, right now," Scott said. "I think this is the right time and I'm the right coach to get to a championship."

Cleveland Cavaliers ready for meeting with LeBron James

After two days of meetings with the New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers, the hometown Cavs are up next to make their sales pitch to mega free agent LeBron James.

Their strategy, according to sources, will be somewhat different from the other teams' and focus on just how well they know their superstar. The meeting is expected to be relatively short, nowhere near the length of the Knicks' and Heat's, who met with James for more than two hours.

Owner Dan Gilbert, General Manager Chris Grant and new coach Byron Scott are expected to be the principles in the meeting, but other members of the organization that James is close with could be present as well.

The Cavs also plan on playing toward James' sense of humor and playfulness, something with which the team is very familiar. The plan is to keep it loose and informal because of their long-term relationship with James, who has been attending the meetings in T-shirts and sweats while his suitors arrive in $2,000 suits.

Although the Cavs have met with James in person several times since the end of the season, they have been preparing for this moment for several months. While their presentation will not be as flashy as some of the others, sources said the Cavs spent significant money and time in creating their show.

The Cavs have displayed the theme of their pitch with the billboards reading "Home" that are across the city. The feeling of home and the comfort with the team is part of the selling point.

There will, of course, be serious business to discuss. The Cavs have two visions to explain. One is how Scott sees James within his systems and what changes he plans to make.

Scott and James already know each other. They have spent time together at events set up by mutual ally Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets. But James doesn't know Scott as a coach. Scott hopes to change that today.

Speaking as if he were addressing James directly, Scott said at his introductory news conference on Friday in Independence that he wants the Cavs to be a running offensive team. That is something James has privately, and sometimes publicly, wanted to do more over the last several seasons.

"You could almost look at LeBron as a Magic Johnson type," Scott said, comparing James to his former teammate with the Lakers and close friend. "He has that type of ability, that type of skill."

Eugene Hoshiko / Associated PressIf they can convince LeBron James to stay put, the Cavaliers will be in position to make a bid to acquire power forward Chris Bosh, left, James' teammate with Team USA.
The second piece of serious business is the roster upgrades that can be executed if James re-signs. That is where Grant and Gilbert come in. The other teams trying to sign James are working toward bringing in other top free agents. The Cavs aren't out of that game.

According to a source, the Toronto Raptors like some of the pieces the Cavs could use in a sign-and-trade for Chris Bosh. The Cavs, unlike rivals trying to get Bosh such as the Bulls and Heat, can offer a package of prospects, quality veterans, expiring contracts and instant savings.

Because of the depth of the roster, the Cavs can absorb a bad contract or two from the Raptors, which could save Toronto millions of dollars this season and years into the future and help with a rebuilding process after Bosh's departure.

It would all be predicated on Bosh wanting to come to Cleveland, and that would depend on James recruiting him after re-signing. So would all the other major moves the Cavs would look into and show James.

Which is why re-signing him is the first priority, and the plan is to show that to him today.

LeBron James' humor and fun habits best known by Cavaliers: A point they made during their meeting

Cleveland, Ohio -- LeBron James' free agent meetings are in the homestretch, the Cavaliers hoping the focus is on the "home" part.
The Cavs met with James for around 90 minutes Saturday, making perhaps their final pitch to re-sign him in a meeting that focused on the team's familiarity with the star and his comfort level with the franchise.

New coach Byron Scott, general manager Chris Grant, assistant general manager Lance Blanks and owner Dan Gilbert were the principals in the meeting. In addition to presentations from Scott and Grant about their plans, sources said the Cavs also planned to show James a cartoon featuring him and his friends as characters.

It was made in a Family Guy style, which is one of James' favorite shows, and featured some inside jokes related to the team. Those who know James personally know that he loves cartoons, inside jokes and cheap laughs. The central part of the Cavs' pitch is that they know him the best.

"We had a very good meeting with LeBron and his group," Grant said after the sit-down. "It went well, it was fun. It was very interactive. Obviously we know LeBron well. I would characterize it as positive."

To set the scene, the Cavs organized a "fan tunnel" down East 9th Street that eventually drew hundreds who were provided black "Home" signs by the team. A large group of fans gathered around the garage entrance to James' office building.

When the Cavs' group arrived in two vehicles, fans tossed powder over the cars to mimic James' pregame ritual. James arrived a few moments later in a third different car he's used this week.

"We think it is pretty incredible that LeBron chose to have these meetings here in Cleveland, his home," Grant said. "We want to thank the fans for the turnout and support."

The Bulls arrived at about 1:15, shortly after the Cavs left, represented by owner Jerry Reinsdorf, general manager Gar Forman, president John Paxson and coach Tom Thibodeau.

LeBron James keeps quiet (but lets his game talk) during visit to Akron skills camp

AKRON, Ohio -- A shake of the head and smile is all the waiting world got from LeBron James Monday when he was asked about his future as he left his Nike camp at the University of Akron.

James made a bit of a surprise appearance for a workout on the first day of the LeBron James Skills Academy at Rhodes Arena. If he's stressing at all about his free agency decision with six teams attempting to sign him and much of the NBA hanging on his move, it didn't show.

He looked relaxed during the two-hour workout and after an another hour of stretching and icing he left without directly answering reporters' questions about his decision or his timetable. As is commonplace, James wore a Yankees cap in and out of the building.

James' manager, Maverick Carter, also declined to comment before James' group left in a motorcade led by James in a white Bentley coupe.

It is believed James won't make an announcement on where he plans to sign at least until after the three-day camp ends on Wednesday. He is expected to make another appearance at the camp on Tuesday. Players can officially begin signing with teams on Thursday.

Karen Schiely / Akron Beacon-JournalLeBron James and New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul enjoyed the opportunity to play agianst some top college and high-school talent during Monday's visit to James' skills camp.
The Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls are believed to be the most serious contenders for James' services. But Monday the New York Knicks reportedly came to the brink of a deal with forward Amar'e Stoudemire, which would be the biggest signing of the summer so far and could increase their visibility to James.

The only drama during the afternoon came when James and close friend Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets teamed up to play in a pickup game against some of the college stars in attendance. Paul was taking it a bit easy as he recovers from ankle and knee injuries but he and James had all eyes on them when executing some fast breaks.

James did not play at full speed but looked to be in excellent condition, perhaps having lost some weight from the end of the regular season. He did not show any signs of lingering problems with a right elbow injury that bothered him off and on during the last several weeks of the season. After the workout, however, James iced the elbow and forearm.

Joining James at the workout was Cavs 2009 first-round draft pick Christian Eyenga, who is in town working out with the team and is expected to take part in summer league in Las Vegas starting next week. Eyenga made several athletic plays during the pickup game, including an alley-oop dunk off a pass from James.

Current Cavs free agent forward Jawad Williams also took part as did former team guard Damon Jones and former James high school teammate Romeo Travis.

James was stretched and treated before and after the workout by Cavs assistant athletic trainer Mike Mancias, who works heavily with him in the off-season.

The pickup games virtually stopped all action in the gym so the college and high school stars could watch the two All-Stars play together. James went up against several different players, including Chris Wright of Dayton and Kyle Singler of Duke.

LeBron To Announce Decision Thursday Evening On ESPN

Jul 06, 2010 9:53 PM EST
LeBron James will announce his free agency decision on ESPN at 9:00 PM EST on Thursday, according to Chris Broussard.

RealGM Note: James had meetings with the Nets, Knicks, Clippers, Heat, Cavaliers and Bulls last week.

James was reportedly attempting to recruit Chris Bosh to Cleveland this week, but his fellow free agent prefers to end up in Chicago, New Jersey or Miami.

Dwyane Wade is the other big free agent who has yet to announce his intentions.

James starred in a television commercial several months ago alluding to a 2010 press conference, where he announced he was going to play for the Cleveland Browns.

With multiple other high profile stars also in free agency, one of the more suspenseful aspects of the build-up to his Thursday announcement will be whether or not it will leak beforehand.

James joined Twitter on Tuesday and there has also been activity on his official web site, leading some to speculate that his decision would first be released via his own social media.

According to Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, ESPN was in talks with James about filming his planned free agency "tour", but talks ended when the Cavaliers were eliminated by the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Broussard reported on ESPNEWS that the Knicks "are very much alive" in the race to sign James and said he doesn't think the Bulls are out of the running either. Broussard also believes the Cavaliers may retain James.
