Re: Cleveland Cavaliers - TUTTI NEL LAGO.

Re: Cleveland Cavaliers - TUTTI NEL LAGO.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Fitting his reputation, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert appears to be getting aggressive and serious in search of a new coach.
According to multiple sources, Gilbert has discussed the framework of a massive contract offer to Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. Gilbert, a Michigan State graduate, has handled the recruitment personally and Izzo is said to be mulling the chance to jump to the NBA.
The offer is said to be worth approximately $6 million annually and would be for up to five years, much larger than the industry standard for a coach without previous NBA head coaching experience. The offer might also be loaded with potential bonuses and perks including free use of one of Gilbert's private jets.
The Plain Dealer reported that Izzo was on the team's short list when Mike Brown was fired two weeks ago. Yahoo Sports reported over the weekend that Izzo had emerged as Gilbert's top candidate after he announced a split with general manager Danny Ferry. The Lake County News Herald reported Sunday night that Izzo had been offered the job.
Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said today that Izzo had not been offered a contract by the Cavs. It is possible the Cavs haven't formalized an offer. But several sources indicated Gilbert stepped up his recruitment efforts over the weekend.
Several people who are friends of Izzo said that they didn't think he'd take the job without first finding out whether LeBron James would re-sign with the Cavs.
This is a position most in the NBA have taken since Brown was fired. It appears Gilbert is trying to overcome this worry by presenting such a large salary and benefits.
Izzo's base salary at Michigan State is $1.6 million with a guaranteed $1 million in bonuses per year. After leading the Spartans to their sixth Final Four in the last 12 years, Izzo hit bonuses that jacked up his pay package to more than $3 million. Gilbert, it seems, has offered to double that.
The Spartans have a strong returning team and an excellent recruiting class and may be ranked in the top 3 in preseason polls. Izzo has told people he'd like to remain at Michigan State until he won another title.
Izzo has allowed himself to be wooed in the past only to turn down the chance at large salary increases. He's rebuffed the Hawks, Raptors, Timberwolves and Pistons over the last 10 years.

Former Hornets and Nets head coach Byron Scott will be considered by the Cavaliers as they search for a new head coach.
Cleveland fired Mike Brown last month after they were eliminated by Boston in the second round of the postseason.
John Reid of the Times-Picayune first reported the story.
RealGM Note: Scott has a career winning percentage of .498 in 707 career games while leading the Nets to two NBA Finals.

Re: Cleveland Cavaliers - TUTTI NEL LAGO.
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Say this for the Cavaliers, they know drama.
The last time they introduced a new general manager, in 2005, Danny Ferry didn't even wear a suit to a hastily-arranged press conference. In just his second day on the job, he didn't have time for such formalities. He'd been hired just a couple of days before the NBA Draft and the start of free agency and needed to figure out how to spend $28 million in salary cap room.
This time, on Tuesday, Chris Grant was in a resplendent blue suit for his official promotion to GM. But just like when Ferry was hired, there was no room for pleasantries with so much else going on.
Now it is a coaching search and LeBron James' huge free agency. Maybe in that order. Maybe not.
In discussing the coaching unknown, Grant acknowledged reports that the Cavs have been in contact with Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. But both he and owner Dan Gilbert, as would be expected, would go no farther.
Sources have indicated Gilbert began talking with Izzo shortly after Mike Brown was fired last month. Gilbert informally offered Izzo the job early last week, prior to Ferry's announcement to leave his GM post. The offer is believed to be at least $6 million a year for up to five years.
Now Izzo is waiting and mulling. Despite what Grant and Gilbert might say about talking to multiple candidates, they are waiting for Izzo's answer. It has already taken over a week and the Cavs are not expecting an immediate answer because of the weight of Izzo's decision.
Why all the waiting? Well, let Gilbert explain it.
Clearly upset with stories in the national media speculating on James' lording over the Cavs' decisions, Gilbert sought to send out a message that he and Grant are the ones in charge.
"The concept that LeBron James has been involved in any way, shape or form of firing our head coach, involved in the transition of our general manager, or will be involved in future of coaching decisions or hires is totally and patently false," Gilbert said. "It is unfair to him, it is unfair to the franchise.
"Nor has he been involved heavily in past major trades. He's a basketball player and a great one and his interests are aligned with ours. The concept that this franchise has been handed to a player who is running it and making the decisions is completely false. He'll tell you that, Chris will tell you that, I'll tell you that. The truth is the truth."
According to multiple sources from both within the organization and close to James, this is indeed the case. James hasn't even had a protracted conversation with team officials since the season ended, one source said.
However, in re-establishing that he's running the show, Gilbert also described the rub. And why there could be a lot of waiting.
Izzo, and perhaps other potential coaching candidates, are likely going to take a long time even when considering lucrative offers. Without getting a sense from James about what he might do, it will be hard to commit.
James, as he's said both publicly and privately, doesn't plan on committing to anything until at least July.
"We're not going to get into specifics in our conversations with LeBron," Grant said. "We have a plan in place and a system and we're going to follow that. It wouldn't be fair for any negotiation to be public, it is not something we'd do."
The Cavs' path to re-signing James, it is believed, is the same strategy they had under Ferry. That is to mimic what the San Antonio Spurs did when they were threatened with the loss of MVP Tim Duncan in free agency a decade ago. The Spurs attempted to make decisions that would improve the team without consulting Duncan on every move. The hope was the Duncan would evaluate the moves and re-sign.
Duncan made the Spurs sweat, taking a high-profile recruiting visit to Orlando, before re-signing and winning three more championships. The plan worked and, with a few variations, the Cavs have been attempting the same idea.
There is, however, one significant difference: A lack of the stability the Spurs had in their leadership at the time.
So despite a public assumption that James is calling the shots, Gilbert appears to be sticking to that plan.
"LeBron James is a significant, important, MVP basketball player," Gilbert said. "We believe his interests and philosophy are aligned with ours. We try to make sure our decisions, they are our decisions not his decisions, will philosophically align with winning."
Whether that plan will work or won't will be determined sometime in the future -- even if it isn't the near future. That is something the team seems realistic about, admitting they could be in for a long search no matter what Izzo's final answer will be.
"I want to find the right guy and I want to find the right fit," Grant said. "That could be in a week and that could be in a month and a half. We're going to make the decisions based on who that right person is and the best fit for our team."

Re: Cleveland Cavaliers - TUTTI NEL LAGO.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tom Izzo has flirted with NBA jobs before and then backed away from the edge only to stay at Michigan State.
There's a chance that is what could be happening with his latest suitor, the Cavaliers. But there's no doubt the Michigan State coach is getting closer to that edge.
According to a Michigan State source, Izzo has scheduled a trip to Cleveland on Thursday to meet with team officials and possibly tour the Cavs' facilities. Whether or not Izzo will go through with the trip is unknown.
That isn't the only sign he's gotten serious about Dan Gilbert's offer to replace Mike Brown. Sources told The Plain Dealer Wednesday that Michigan State players left a meeting with Izzo Tuesday night believing he was going to take the Cavs' job.
Izzo didn't tell the players that directly. He called the meeting to acknowledge reports that he'd been offered the job, but players left afraid they were about to lose their coach.
Several other sources, however, indicated Izzo hadn't made a final decision. The expectation is he will take at least a couple more days to make up his mind.
LeBron James is expected to take considerably longer to make up his mind about his future.
With so much uncertainty, the Cavs are hedging their bets. According to a league source, the Cavs have opened discussions with former Nets and Hornets head coach Byron Scott. ESPN reported on Wednesday that Scott could interview with the team before the end of the week. However, sources indicate Izzo is still Gilbert's first choice.
This is not the first time Izzo has been in this position. He has declined offers to leave for the NBA numerous times over the last 10 years. He's been on the brink a few times, especially with the Atlanta Hawks in 2000, before deciding to stay with the Spartans. His latest rejection of an NBA job was recent as well. A Michigan State trustee told both the Chicago Tribune and the Detroit News on Wednesday that the Chicago Bulls talked to Izzo about their open coaching job before hiring Tom Thibodeau last week.
Trustee Joel Ferguson told the Tribune: "Tom thought he could get the job" with the Bulls.
Izzo's flirtation with the Bulls aside, at least some Spartans seem worried it will turn into a yes this time. A difference in the two jobs, in addition to the possibility James would re-sign, is that the Cavs have a larger budget for their coaching position.
Gilbert has offered Izzo at least $6 million a year to leave East Lansing after 15 highly-successful seasons. Thibodeau signed a three-year contract worth a reported $6.5 million with just two years guaranteed. The chance to make significantly more money plus work for someone, in Gilbert, who Izzo knows seems to be getting him to consider the Cavs more deeply.
The entire ordeal, though, is applying stress to Michigan State and the uncertainty may also be affecting recruiting efforts. It seemed to boil over a bit on Wednesday when athletic director Mark Hollis issued a terse statement attacking the media for the coverage of Izzo's potential departure.
"There have been many ridiculous reports," Hollis said in the statement. "I'm angry at the impact they have on student-athletes, coaches, wives and children, and other people at universities and organizations. Tom Izzo is the head basketball coach at Michigan State University."
However, Michigan State has acknowledged the Cavs are interested. The Cavs have said they're interested. Izzo has declined to comment or dismiss the speculation. Now his players are concerned they are losing their coach.
Which is why the Cavs might just be close to getting theirs.

Re: Cleveland Cavaliers - TUTTI NEL LAGO.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tom Izzo came to Cleveland. But despite the hype, it still might just be for a visit.
Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert flew in one of his private jets from his home outside Detroit to Lansing, Mich., to pick up Izzo and then the two flew to town this afternoon. Izzo was expected to tour the Cavs' facilities as well as meet staff members and coaches.
This has given the Cavs' recruitment of Izzo some momentum and the process is no doubt reaching a crescendo. But, according to several sources close to Izzo, the Michigan State coach is still torn about making the jump.
Even though some of his players and a growing number of Spartan officials have realized the Cavs threat is the most serious Izzo has taken any of his NBA offers, there is still a strong belief among Izzo's friends that he'll not accept the job.
Gilbert, who has led the recruitment effort, is obviously hoping to apply a full-court press today in hopes he can dispel Izzo's concerns. It might work, Izzo would not have made the trip if he wasn't seriously considering the offer. But there's still a strong chance it will not.
Several sources Thursday re-affirmed what has been said over and over but still isn't being accepted by many, LeBron James is not being consulted on the Izzo hiring. In addition, James has not given Izzo any indication of what his plans for the future are.
The Cavs front office knows how tenuous the situation is. That is why, to protect themselves, they have turned some of their focus to former New Jersey Nets and New Orleans Hornets coach Byron Scott.
Fanhouse.com reported Thursday that Scott had an hour-long interview with Cavs general manager Chris Grant and his assistant Lance Blanks.
If Izzo turns the Cavs down, expect Scott to then become their No. 1 target.
According to a source, one thing that James has let the organization know is that he's interested in a coach that has played in the NBA. Scott, who had a good relationship with James' close friend Chris Paul, would fit that bill. That is why the Cavs are so interested.
And why if Izzo does take the job that he may be encouraged to have a staff deep in former NBA players.

Cavolo...

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Michigan State coach Tom Izzo will announce his decision regarding the Cavaliers head coach position on Saturday, he told his players during a team meeting Friday afternoon.
Sources told The Plain Dealer that although Izzo gave no indication what his decision would be, players came away with the impression that he would take the Cavs job.
Izzo flew to Cleveland on Thursday and spent several hours with owner Dan Gilbert, touring the Cavs facilities and meeting with team officials and assistant coaches.
The Cavs have not scheduled any announcements.
Quindi domani(o forse oggi vista l' ora :lol2:) sapremo come andrà finire.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Tom Izzo will continue his coaching career somewhere next fall and he'll do it in a high-profile job, but which job it will be continues to be a saga of Izzo's making.
Friday, a day after he spent nine hours with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert in Cleveland, Izzo called a second team meeting this week with his Michigan State players. Again, he didn't say whether he would come back to coach a team that is expected to be a national championship contender or to go to the Cavaliers, with or without LeBron James.
At least several players left this meeting believing Izzo was going to accept the Cavs' offer, a source told The Plain Dealer. Izzo told people Friday that he would come to a decision soon but that it wouldn't be Saturday, according to sources. There is a general feeling among Michigan State officials that Izzo will either accept the Cavs job or finally turn it down by Monday.
The decision is obviously complex and difficult for Izzo.
There has been speculation by people close to him all week that, while he's more seriously thinking about leaving than ever before, he'll ultimately pass on Gilbert's $6 million a year offer to replace Mike Brown.
Meanwhile, after each of the two meetings, his players seem to perceive just the opposite.
Friday's team meeting, officials said, had been scheduled so Spartans players could get measured for their Big Ten Championship rings. Michigan State shared the regular season title with Ohio State and Purdue and reached the Final Four.
Yet, to call two meetings and not tell the concerned players what is going to happen seems unconventional. But then again, this entire situation is unconventional.
What Izzo is weighing isn't just legacy and money. The central issue appears to be the Cavs' chances to re-sign James, which makes the job completely different than if James leaves. If he does depart, the Cavs are going to have to rebuild, a process that may take several seasons.
If James stays, the team will likely again be considered a title contender depending on other off-season moves.
James, sources said, is not giving Izzo any clear idea on what his plans are. ''The Cavs' front office, meanwhile, continues its search for a coach. Byron Scott, who was interviewed by phone Thursday, is not necessarily the choice if Izzo turns the job down, according to a league source.
Though Scott, the former New Jersey Nets and New Orleans Hornets coach, is believed to be at the top of the Cavs' list of coaches with experience, the team has been talking to other candidates including some who have not been head coaches in the NBA.

Re: Cleveland Cavaliers - TUTTI NEL LAGO.
