Jimmy Rollins hit a leadoff homer in the first inning against Astros right-hander Roy Oswalt on Sunday.

It was the 34th leadoff homer of Rollins' career, which extends his franchise record. The Cubs' Alfonso Soriano is the only active player with more leadoff homers. He has 54.

Rollins out with strained right calf
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins was a late scratch from the lineup for the Phillies' home opener Monday due to a strained right calf.

Rollins apparently injured the calf running in the outfield during warmups. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury. He's hitting .391 with eight runs scored in the first six games this season.

Rollins took batting practice and was announced in the starting lineup before the game. It was Juan Castro who jogged out to shortstop in the first inning, his first appearance as a member of the Phils.

Castro, a journeyman infielder in his 13th season in the Major Leagues, was signed as a free agent in December. He started 29 games last season for the Dodgers, including 19 at shortstop.

Castro also moved into Rollins' spot as the leadoff hitter. He grounded out to third base in his first at-bat.

6W 1L

Onto the injury news.  From the mouth of Jayson Werth, he said he hurt is hip during an AB in the 4th inning of yesterday’s home opening win, but it is not serious. He said he may miss a few games, but he doesnt believe it will linger on.  One can only hope, because Jimmy Rollins’s injury seems much more serious.  He will undergo an MRI today on his strained calf, but by all accounts, a DL stint could be in the work.

according to Baseball Prospectus’ injury expert, Will Carroll, Rollins has suffered a strained gastroc, which will require 2-4 weeks of down-time if it turns out to be the Grade 2 sprain it looked like.

As Pat Gallen reported earlier Tuesday, Howard worked with Barry Bonds this past offseason a player who, displayed more patience at the plate in his career than any other player in major league history.
One year, Bonds’ on-base percentage was .609, meaning his “not-on-base percentage” was .391. That year, only ten other NL players had an OBP as high as .391, meaning that Bonds’ “not-on-base-percentage” was higher than every NL player’s on-base percentage, save for the league’s second through tenth best OBP guys. Staggering.

The Phillies placed Jimmy Rollins on the 15-day DL Wednesday with a strained right calf. The injury, acquired during pre-game warmups in Monday’s home opener, is believed to be between a Grade 1 and Grade 2 strain. Wilson Valdez was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace Rollins on the Phils’ 25-man roster.
How a strain can be between two grades is beyond me, because, after all, isn’t the point of placing grades on injuries to differentiate between one level and another?
Grade 2 calf strains typically take 3-6 weeks to heal, but all cases are different. Jimmy’s injury is reportedly carrying a 2-4 week tag. As Bill Baer of Crashburn Alley noted, Shane Victorino missed twenty-two days in July 2007 with a strained calf, and subsequently sat out twelve more after returning.

Werth Not Starting, But Available
Greg Dobbs will bat fifth and start in right field tonight in place of Jayson Werth. A sore hip required Werth to be taken out of Monday’s 7-4 win over the Nationals, but the move was more of the better-safe-than-sorry variety than anything else.
Werth commented after Monday’s game that he was fine and that removing him from the game was solely a precautionary measure.
As for his absence in Wednesday’s lineup card, Charlie Manuel stated that this was just a way to give Werth an extended breather, and that he would be available to come off the bench.

The Phillies have faced 21 different pitchers this season. They have scored runs off of 17 of them.
The Phillies bullpen has compiled a 1.40 ERA in 25 2/3 innings pitched. Only 27 baserunners have been allowed, for a brilliant 1.05 WHIP. The unit has 21 strikeouts.
The team has scored at least 7 runs in six of eight games.
Four Phillies (Rollins, Polanco, Utley, Howard) have an OPS of 1.186 or higher.
Five Phillies (add Carlos Ruiz to the above four) have an on-base percentage of .421 or higher.
Utley, Polanco, and Rollins rank 1-2-3 in the NL in runs scored.
And to anyone saying, “none of this matters, they’ve played the Nationals and Astros,” keep in mind that 7 of 16 National League teams have given up 40 or more runs this season, and only two have played the Phillies.

The Marlins, Brewers, and Pirates have all given up more runs than the Nats and Astros. Would you say, “Who cares? It’s just the Marlins and Brewers?”
