Lidge unlikely to be ready for opener
Phils' closer expects to stay in Florida; Romero also iffy

Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero were separated from their teammates on Saturday, working out in Clearwater while the Phillies played the Twins in Fort Myers.

They may part ways with the Phillies again soon.

"It's fairly clear," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said, "that it's going to be tough for them to start the season on the active roster."

Though Amaro received a positive report on Lidge's one-inning stint Saturday in a Minor League game, Lidge told the Philadelphia Inquirer afterward that he expects to remain in Clearwater when the Phillies fly north.

Lidge allowed a hit and a run in his inning against Blue Jays Class A Minor Leaguers, throwing 20 pitches.

Recovering from offseason elbow and knee surgeries, Lidge has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game. Entering Spring Training, he estimated that he was two weeks behind the other pitchers in camp, and he said recently that he felt he had shaved a week off that discrepancy.

If that's true, the Phils could put him on the disabled list retroactively and have him available as early as the second series of the season. As long as Lidge does not play in a Grapefruit League game, the Phillies don't have to make a decision on him until rosters are due next Sunday.

Lidge, 33, is coming off the worst season of his career, in which he blew more than a quarter of his save chances and posted a 7.21 ERA.
Romero also has not yet pitched in a spring game, coming off an elbow surgery of his own. In the likely event that he also begins the season on the disabled list, Philadelphia would have just one lefty, Antonio Bastardo, in the bullpen. And Amaro made a point of saying Bastardo has not yet made the team.

Several lefties have been released by their clubs in recent weeks, including veteran Brian Shouse by the Red Sox. But with Romero progressing, Amaro downplayed the notion that he may try to acquire another bullpen arm before Opening Day.

"If he continues to show steady improvement, especially with the way he's throwing right now, we don't have any great urgency to go run and get two or three left-handers," Amaro said. "If there's an opportunity to improve our club with a left-hander or a right-hander, or any position for that matter, then we'll look to pursue it. But right now, there's no real sense of urgency."

Romero, who missed 50 games due to a drug suspension last season and another two months due to injury, has said his goal is to be ready for the Phillies' home opener against the Nationals on April 12.

The Phillies claimed an old face off of waivers today as they brought back 35-year old Nelson Figueroa.  The Former Mets pitcher was let go this week after a 3-8 season in 2009, in which his ERA was a respectable 4.09.

It appears as though he will take the spot of Andrew Carpenter, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before the Phils opening day game against the Nationals.  Figueroa, if you remember, was part of the monumental Curt Schilling trade that sent the Phils ace to the D-Backs in 2000.
