I would like to see Medlen used as a “two inning, late game” guy. As in, Saito and Wagner pitch an inning each tonight. Next night, Hanson goes 7 solid around 110 pitches, Braves up 2. Medlen goes in and gets a 2 inning save. Say, 55 warm ups, 45 appearances, 90 innings. That would help Moylan, O’Flaherty, Saito, and Wagner avoid warm ups and appearances (and also limit Saito’s and Wagner’s “games finished” bonuses and also prove Medlen for future closing or starting).

That leaves Medlen ready to pitch 3 or 4 innings as a spot starter 2 or 3 days after an appearance (and he could probably “stretch out” over about 3 more appearances if “missing starter” can’t get back).

Credo che sia senz'altro una buona idea: molto semplicemente, non potendo essere usato da partente (per il momento), è giusto farlo giocare il più possibile uscendo dal 'pen. Per il 2010 spero onestamente di non vederlo più impiegato come mop-up durante qualche partita "inutile" (per quel compito va più che bene Jo-Jo Reyes).

Confermato, senza grosse sorprese, il 25-men roster per l'opening day:

L'unica incertezza riguardava la gara tra Conrad e Thurston per l'ultimo posto tra gli INF, vinta dal primo; Joe Thurston, Clint Sammons, Matt Young, Jeff Lyman, Craig Kimbrel e Jonny Venters inizieranno il 2010 a Gwinnett (AAA). A loro si uniranno gli esordienti in triplo-A Freddie Freeman, Brandon Hicks e Cory Gearrin.

Interessante la strategia di mettere i 2 peggiori hitters in cima. Poteva mettere il pitcher come leadoff a questo punto...

A proposito di quest'ultima decisione, secondo me in alcune partite il manager potrebbe essere creativo e farlo davvero nelle partite esterne. Mandi a battere uno, poi nella parte bassa quello esce ed entra il pitcher. Ti bruci subito un PH, è vero, ma se avessero un bullpen a 6 uomini ed un extra panchinaro...

Quindi il problema del ricevitore degli Oakland Raiders (Heyward-Bey) scelto l' anno scorso sta nel fatto che gli hanno aggiunto il Bey nel cognome...

Comunque debutto strepitoso, non durerà molto in settima posizione...
