Dove vai senza la Colt?
L'intervista al nuovo idolo di angy da Draft Countdown:
Scott Wright: You put on a lot of weight between the Senior Bowl and the Scouting Combine. What is your optimal weight and accurate forty time?
Colt Brennan: I think the weight I’d like to be at is probably between 215 and 220. Right around that is where I’d like to be. My true forty time… The last time I ran a forty was a hand time and I was getting like 4.7’s. I’ve never really trained to run a forty. I was trying to train but unfortunately with my hip injury I never really got a chance to. I think I’m like a 4.7 and if I really had a good day and was flying around out there I could run 4.6.
Scott Wright: You recently underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in your right hip. How is that going and when do you expect to be fully healthy?
Colt Brennan: The surgery went great. I was really excited to hear that when they got in there it was exactly what they thought it would be and they were able to repair the labrum. I’ll be a model patient and they said I should be ready to go around 8 weeks. Right around that 8 to 9 to 10 weeks hopefully I’ll be 100% and ready to go. It should be right around the beginning of July.
Scott Wright: What was the Senior Bowl experience like for you and what is the biggest thing you took away from that week in Mobile?
Colt Brennan: I think it’s a huge misconception when everyone says I didn’t have a good week down at the Senior Bowl. Unfortunately I did get hurt on the first day but I had an unbelievable experience down there and I had a great time with all the players. Coach Martz was a great coach and he really worked me well, worked me hard, and gave me that first-hand experience of what the next level is going to be like. To go down there and be surrounded by All-Stars and have them name me the team captain and the starter just goes to show you I had a great week. It was a real honor and I really enjoyed my experience down there.
Scott Wright: How sick are you of answering questions about being a “System Quarterback”?
Colt Brennan: Obviously the Run & Shoot is designed to put up big numbers for a quarterback so when I come out of that system you gotta be able to take on the criticism. Nobody takes into account that my efficiency, my completion percentage and my touchdown to interception ratio are stats that no Run & Shoot quarterback has ever came close to having before. I’ve had a lot of success in the system but not just touchdowns and yards, it’s been efficiency and wins and I think that’s what really makes a quarterback stand out. I really think that if people watch the film, watch me scramble, watch me run around and make plays, they see there really isn’t a lot of system in the way I play. I’ve played football everywhere from Colorado to Boston to California to Hawaii and I’ve been in every single system out there and I’ve had success in every one of them so if people really do their homework they know that I’ve been in different systems and had success in different systems.
Scott Wright: You actually declared for the NFL Draft a year ago before pulling your name out. Where did the advisory panel project you to go in the 2007 NFL Draft and strictly from a draft stock perspective do you regret that decision at all?
Colt Brennan: Last year my grade that came back from the NFL was a high second round pick. Obviously if I left last year chances are I’d probably be getting drafted higher compared to this year but I think what really matters is where you end up and the situation. I don’t regret that decision at all because of the experiences I had as a senior and that was a once in a lifetime opportunity. All this criticism, all this stuff, I think what it’s really doing is pushing me to the team that I really belong with and that really wants me and that’s what I’m excited about. It’s just life and unfortunately that’s the way it is but I don’t regret my decision.
Scott Wright: What would you say is your greatest strength as a football player and what area do you need to work on?
Colt Brennan: I’d say my greatest strength is I’ve played this game since the first year you can. Everyone keeps saying “He’s a system guy”, “He played in the Run & Shoot”, but if you go on YouTube you can watch me play all the way from Pop Warner to high school and I’ve been under center my whole life. In high school I ran a straight West Coast Offense, at Colorado I ran a West Coast Offense. My strength is I’ve been playing football my whole life. I love the game and know how to play the game, it doesn’t matter what system I’m in. What I need to work on I think is just understanding what the next level is. Obviously I think I needed to get bigger and stronger and that’s something that I’ve already started working at real hard and already kind of accomplished. I think it’s just continuing to be a student of the game and continuing to get bigger and stronger and just adapting to the game at the next level.
Scott Wright: What current NFL quarterback do you most admire and who do you think you compare favorably to?
Colt Brennan: Admire I’d say it’s Brett Favre growing up as a kid. Just watching his retirement and hearing people talk about what he meant to them, he played the game with a real passion. I grew up around Carson Palmer as a kid and he’s a quarterback who I think fundamentally is one of the best out there and that’s who I’d really like to look like. I love the way he plays mechanically because he’s smooth and really efficient.
Scott Wright: What is your greatest football moment to date?
Colt Brennan: Ending my senior year undefeated in the regular season. Having that win at Washington, coming back from down 21 points, getting that win and going 12-0. Having that feeling of accomplishment after that game was pretty awesome and a great experience.
Scott Wright: Who is the best player you have faced during your career?
Colt Brennan: I’d say it was definitely the defensive end from Georgia, #38, Marcus Howard. I think he ran a 4.4 at the Combine I heard, he got player of the game (Sugar Bowl) and was in my face all night. As a player who left an impact on me that’s probably the guy I remember the most.
Scott Wright: Is there one younger player at Hawaii that you see developing into a star, either at the college or pro level?
Colt Brennan: There’s a couple guys I really like. A d-lineman by the name of David Veikune that I’ve always been really impressed with and then our linebacker Adam Leonard. We got a great linebacking crew but Adam Leonard looks and plays like an NFL linebacker.
Scott Wright: Who was your favorite college or pro team growing up? Did you have a favorite player?
Colt Brennan: It was tough because growing up as a kid my dad took me to the Rams and Raiders games but then they both left us within like a year. Growing up I was a huge Notre Dame fan but I just love football and because we really didn’t have a team I kind of watched everybody. Some of the guys I liked growing up were Walter Payton, Brett Favre obviously, Troy Aikman and in college I liked DeShaun Foster. I’m a big fan as well so I grew up kind of liking a little bit of everyone and I could sit here and name guys for a long time.
Scott Wright: What current pro are you most looking forward to going up against in the NFL?
Colt Brennan: I don’t know if it’s so much looking forward to it but I’m really excited to play against Ray Lewis. I don’t know if I’m going to be excited when he’s lined up against me but he’s a linebacker that I have a lot of respect for and I think he’s an unbelievable football player. It’s going to be quite and honor to get hit by him.
Scott Wright: At what point did you realize that you might have a future in football beyond college?
Colt Brennan: I think after my year at Saddleback (Community College). If I didn’t have that situation at Colorado coming out of J.C. I probably would have been able to go anywhere on scholarship. I had an unbelievable year at junior college and I think I realized right then and there that I could definitely play in college and I knew I could have success and that means I could probably play at the next level.
Scott Wright: What do you plan to do once your playing career is over?
Colt Brennan: I come from a big family and I know I want to raise a big family. I’d love to play football, make some money and then sit back and raise a huge family. Maybe get a nice house in Hawaii and enjoy my life.
Scott Wright: When you get your first professional paycheck what is the first thing you will buy?
Colt Brennan: I’m pretty much a kid who’s kind of already got everything so I think I’d rather just leave it in the bank and hold onto it until I can really enjoy it down the road.
Scott Wright: What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
Colt Brennan: Growing up I was a country fan, my grandfather has a couple of ranches in Colorado. I’ve got some Kenny Chesney, some Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw. My buddies always give me a lot of trash for listening to country.
Scott Wright: Do you have any goals in mind when it comes to the NFL Draft (i.e. Top 3 Rounds, Top 5 Rounds, etc.)?
Colt Brennan: I guess if I had a preference I would like to go in the top three rounds just because that means a team really stepped up and said this is a guy we want. I don’t need the big contract or anything like that, I just want a team to step up and do something for me. The main thing is just to go to the right team.
Scott Wright: Is there one or two teams in particular that you’ve noticed paying more attention to you?
Colt Brennan: To be honest I’ve kind of gotten the same interest from a handful of different teams. I really haven’t been able to narrow it down. Just in talking to my agents, who last year represented Trent Edwards, the Buffalo Bills showed no interest in him whatsoever before the draft yet picked him in the third round. It’s tough because you talk to a lot of teams but sometimes those teams that are talking to you are just trying to get more information on why not to draft you and some of the teams that really don’t talk to you that much are just trying not to show that they do want you. Right now it’s a tough thing and you just have to wait until Draft Day to find out.
Scott Wright: Is there a team that you think you would fit in well with?
Colt Brennan: There’s a couple of teams that I’ve always been real interested in. Obviously any team that’s looking for a quarterback so Chicago, Minnesota, Green Bay… I think the main thing is I want to go to a place where they have that traditional fan base and the fans are real loyal, there’s a real strong following and they take a lot of pride in football. That’s the place I’d really love to go.
Scott Wright: Thanks for the time and good luck in a couple of weeks!
