Taylor in critical condition after shooting at home
Associated Press
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. -- Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was shot at his home Monday and was in critical condition, and police are investigating a possible robbery.
Officers were sent to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. after his girlfriend called 911 and said he was shot in his lower body, Lt. Nancy Perez said. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, she said, but did not disclose how many times he was shot.
Investigators were still interviewing the girlfriend and other relatives who were in the home to try to determine what happened, Perez said.
"It could have been a possible burglary, it could have been a possible robbery," Perez said. "It has not been confirmed as yet."
Taylor's family asked that no information about his condition be released, hospital spokeswoman Lorraine Nelson said.
A brief statement from the Redskins said Taylor was undergoing treatment at the Miami hospital and that police were investigating.
Taylor has a home in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay that he bought two years ago. The 24-year-old player is in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003. He leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games because of a knee injury.
Taylor has been in trouble numerous times since he was drafted as the No. 5 overall pick in 2004. He has been fined at least seven times during his professional career for late hits and other infractions, including a $17,000 penalty for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game in January 2006. He also was fined $25,000 for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium shortly after he was drafted.
Redskins coaches and players have defended Taylor, saying he was smart and misunderstood. Taylor has been slow to let anyone into his inner circle. He has rarely spoken to reporters, saying he does not trust them. Teammates said he became more mature over the last year after he became a father for the first time.
In 2005, Taylor was accused of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that broke out after Taylor and some friends went looking for the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles.
Taylor reached a deal with prosecutors last year after they agreed to drop felony charges against him. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation. The pleas prompted another fine from the NFL but kept his football career intact.
He also was ordered to talk about the importance of education at 10 Miami schools and had to contribute $1,000 for scholarships to each of those schools.
The man Taylor allegedly hit, Ryan Hill, sued, seeking at least $15,000 in damages. Hill sustained bruises to his body, incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of the fight, the lawsuit said.

Re: Sean Taylor "fighting for his life"
Avevo postato anche io la notizia nel topic generico "NFL Season 2K7", fortunatamente ora le sue condizioni sembra si stiano stabilizzando.
Washington PostSafety Pierson Prioleau just spoke. Before we get to that, Amy Shipley is reporting from Florida and she has chatted with family members who say Sean remains in surgery in critical condition. I am hearing the same thing from within this building. It's an ongoing situation.
Prioleau said:
"You never think about entering a team meeting as a football team addressing an issue that is way beiger than this issue of football. Just as a team right now, as an organization, it is bigger than football This is not just a member of the Washington Redskins, we're talking about a dad, a brother, a friend of ours, and that's where were at with this right now. Our prayers go out to Sean and his family, and that's where were at as a football team right now."
Coach Gibbs and a team chaplain addressed the team, Prioleau said.
Prioleau said the players received few specifics and details about the incident.
Receiver James Thrash, who has been training with Taylor to try to overcome their injuries, said:
"You come to love each other and treat eachother as brothers. You try to be a leader, but at the same time right now you're just praying to God for the best."
Like Prioleau, Thrash said the players were given no specifics of the medical condition.
"We haven't been told anything in terms of medical, we're just waiting and hopefully we're going to get some good news real soon."
Prioleau and Thrash are two of the spiritual leaders on the team and Thrash said there was already an informal prayer group among some players prior to the team meeting this afternoon.
Also, WR Santana Moss, one of the players closest to Taylor and a fellow Miami product, did not address the media, and I don't blame him for that at all. There's not much these guys can say right now other than to express their concern for Sean. WR Antwaan Randle El also declined to comment.

Re: Sean Taylor "fighting for his life"
Aggiornamenti, al momento pare che Taylor sia in coma.
Miami-Dade police say they've found no evidence of a robbery being the motive in Sean Taylor's Sunday night shooting.
The Miami Herald reported Monday that Taylor's girlfriend heard an intruder at the rear of his house and called police. When Taylor went to check on the situation, he was allegedly shot. Taylor is currently believed to be in a coma.
Intanto si sta ancora cercando di capire come sia successo, pare che la polizia non abbia trovato nessuna evidenza che confermerebbe le prime ipotesi di un colpo di pistola sparata da un malintenzionato che era entrato in casa.

Washington TimesIt appears that police are still trying to figure out how Sean Taylor got shot.
Several media reports suggest that Taylor was shot by an intruder during some sort of burglary attempt, but Miami-Dade police just told me that they have yet to uncover any solid evidence one way or another.
"At this time, to be honest, it's really unknown," police spokesman Mario Rashid said. "There's no evidence confirming any of that, or not. We're just trying to get any information about what happened."
The Miami Herald has reported that police were initially called by Taylor's girlfriend, claiming that there was someone at the rear door of the house. When Taylor went to check out the situation, he got shot by someone.
The Herald is reporting that some of Taylor's neighbors believe there may have been at least one break-in attempt at Taylor's house earlier in the week.
The only person who may know exactly what happened is Taylor, who remains in critical condition Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. We are working to confirm reports that he is out of surgery.
