Situazione infortunati:
Tight end Vernon Davis has a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and most likely will miss the next two games, the 49ers said Monday after he underwent an MRI examination.
A team spokesman said after two weeks, the team will "see from there." Davis said he felt fine, but he was wearing a brace on his knee Monday.
Delanie Walker will likely get the starting assignment in Davis' absence. Walker played after Davis sustained the injury on a hit from Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. It was the play that was ultimately ruled an incomplete pass on a controversial call by referee Gerald Austin.
S Mark Roman sustained an undisclosed elbow injury but should be fine for this week's game.
S Keith Lewis and RB Maurice Hicks both sustained concussions, but it looks as if they'll be available for this week's game.
Almeno due settimane per Davis, devo ammettere che ad un certo punto pensavo peggio.
Intanto curioso, ma onesto, atteggiamento del LB FA Wong che ha rifiutato un workout con i 49ers perché non si sente in forma:
The 49ers wanted to bring in veteran linebacker Kailee Wong, 31, for a workout on Monday to take a possible roster spot after the team lost Manny Lawson to a season-ending injury last week. But Wong decided he wasn't in midseason shape. Wong, an eight-year vet, played for the Texans last season. He did not go to training camp with any team this summer.
"After the 49ers called last week, he didn't feel he had a sufficient base to play this year," said Steve Baker, Wong's agent.

Scusa eh, ma perchè schifoso?
E' andato per le gambe, perchè uno grosso come Davis ti trascina con sè se punti alla parte alta del corpo.
Dovrei dire la stessa cosa di Roman su Hines Ward? No, sono cose che capitano.

Vista la replica ieri sera, anche se alla fine facevo un po' di fatica a tenere gli occhi aperti causa dieci ore scarse di sonno nelle ultime tre notti.
Che dire, la sconfitta era ovviamente preventivata ma tutto sommato non siamo andati malissimo al di là di quello che dice il punteggio. La difesa continua a soddisfarmi, qualche segno di miglioramento dall'attacco ma siamo lontano anni luce da esprimere un gioco offensivo decente. La linea mi sembra il reparto che dà più preoccupazioni poca protezione per Smith e pochi spazi per Gore (che è in evidente ritardo di condizione, fisica e psicologica); altro grosso problema sono i WR che continuano a droppare palloni ed a nascondersi dietro i DB avversari.
Cmq questa è andata, domenica arrivano i Seahawks in uno scontro molto importante per i destini della NFC West; l'anno scorso li abbiamo sweeppati giocando due ottime partite vediamo se quest'anno riusciamo a ripeterci.
Fortunatemente non sembra serissimo l'infortunio di Davis; dovrebbe star fuori un paio di settimane e rientrare dopo il Bye.

Eh sì, perchè lui è andato DI PROPOSITO con il casco sul ginocchio... Ma per favore! :roll:
Giocano a football, non a biliardo, sono cose che in una partita possono succedere (Ward era in stampelle all'allenamento di ieri per la botta che ha preso ma nessuno sul nostro topic si è permesso di dare dello schifoso al vostro giocatore).

Se il forum me lo permette vorrei dire che condivido in pieno le impressioni dell'assonnato Jeremy.
- La OL mi e' sembrata il reparto piu' preoccupante;
- subito dopo i WR;
- Smith qualche erroretto lo fa anche di suo (l'intercetto credo sia una sua lettura sbagliata);
- la difesa e' buona ma avrebbe potuto fare di piu': vicini o con le mani addosso a Big Ben, dovevano buttarlo giu' (dipende anche dai meriti del QB comunque: e' veramente grosso e l'ho visto molte volte non crollare su contatti anche duri)
- sono contento per Jacobs: il suo dito alzato al cielo dopo la meta penso fosse rivolto alla figlioletta: speriamo che possa avere altre soddisfazioni da questa stagione
- mi e' piaciuto come hanno cercato di coinvolgere VD: peccato per l'infortunio

Dimenticavo: grandissimo Nolan sia per la corsa in campo in occasione del chellenge della ricezione di Miller che per il "consiglio" all'arbitro in quello della ricezione di Davis.
Piccola soddisfazione settimanale; in questo momento Andy Lee è il miglior punter dell'NFL.

sicuramente non aveva mirato al paraspalle...
comunque capisco che certe cose in sto sport possono succedere ma non mi sono mai piaciuti i colpi di casco sulle gambe, troppo alta la probabilità di farsi male

Nolan ha dimostrato di essere migliorato nella gestione della partita: probabilemente Manusky e' uno di cui si fida per la difesa (e mi sembra che abbia ragione a lasciarlo fare).
Lee mi faceva impressione! Ha tirato delle vere cannonante: su uno dei primi punt, il ritornatore e' dovuto andare indietro 20 yard per aggiustarsi sul pallone!

The 49ers have drafted pretty well since Scot McCloughan and Mike Nolan took over. One exception was receiver/returner Brandon Williams. He never earned the right to get on the field as a receiver, and he didn't do much as a return specialist, either. On Tuesday, the 49ers released Williams, and signed 36-year-old Michael "Beer Man" Lewis.
Williams was a third-round pick (No. 84 overall) of the 49ers last year. As a rookie, he had one thing going for him: He was sure-handed. But Williams began looking increasingly unsteady catching punts.
His muffed punt against the Rams two weeks ago led to an easy touchdown. Although he didn't do much in Pittsburgh, word from the Steelers' broadcast booth was that Williams struggled mightily judging and catching punts in pregame warm-ups.
"It is always a difficult decision to make a move like this during the season," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said in a statement. "It is never easy to waive a player. Brandon was a big part of the progress that we continued to make. We made this difficult decision because we feel it is best for our team going forward. Brandon had an outstanding offseason, and I still believe he will make an impact in the NFL."
Williams averaged just 6.7 yards per punt return last season in 13 games as a rookie. He was deactivated for one game after breaking team rules at the hotel in St. Louis, his hometown. This season, in addition to his muffed punt, Williams returned five punts for 6.4 yards and fair caught five balls.
The 49ers replace him with Lewis, who played each of his six seasons with the Saints before they cut him in June. He played in one Pro Bowl and is the NFL single-season record holder for most combined return yards in a season with 2,432.
He got his nickname because he drove a beer truck before earning a roster spot with the Saints at 29 after a tryout in 2001. Niners special-teams coach Al Everest coached Lewis with the Saints. Lewis sustained a knee injury in 2005, and missed most of last season due to the injury.
"Michael Lewis is an exceptional returner who has experience and has been to a Pro Bowl," Everest said. "We are picking up a player who has been there and knows what it is supposed to look like. I am looking forward to Michael getting a fresh start on our team."
The signing of Michael Lewis will surely create all kinds of confusion. After all, the 49ers already have one Michael Lewis on the team -- their starting strong safety. Now, they have two Michael Lewises and one Keith Lewis.
Also, the 49ers signed linebacker Tyson Smith to the practice squad to take the place of Zak Keasey, who was promoted to the 53-man roster over the weekend. Keasey took the roster spot that opened when Manny Lawson was placed in IR.
Smith (Iowa State) spent part of the '06 season on the Giants' practice squad before seeing action on special teams for three games. The Giants released him prior to the start of this season.

Da un articolo di Maiocco un'accurata analisi della partita e in particolare di ciò che probabilmente ha fatto la differenza nella gara: le prestazioni delle linee, sia offensive che difensive.
The Steelers offensive line was that the ability of center Sean Mahan to single-block the 49ers' nose tackles paved the way for Willie Parker's big day.
In watching the game, it was pretty obvious. By my count, the Steelers ran the ball 28 times when the 49ers were playing with a true nose tackle. The 49ers' nose tackles occupied a double-team block on just six of those plays. Aubrayo Franklin was one-on-one 15 times, and five times he received a double-team. Isaac Sopoaga saw just one double-team on eight running plays.
In order for a 3-4 defense to be effective, the nose tackle has to occupy more than one blocker to regularly keep the linebackers unblocked and able to fill the holes.
Franklin made four tackles, while Sopoaga had two. So they made some plays, but there were also some big plays that were a result of Steelers guards getting down the field to block linebackers.
The other thing I noticed was on the other side of the ball. Center Eric Heitmann and left guard Larry Allen, in particular, had difficult times. There was a lot of pressure coming up the middle on passing plays. The word is that Allen is playing at 329 pounds, the lightest he's been in a long time. However, at 35, he is slowing down. It really shows in pass protection.
In the run game, the 49ers' guards rarely had an opportunity to make blocks beyond the line of scrimmage because of the strength of the Steelers' defensive line, beginning with nose tackle Casey Hampton.
About the only time it happened was on the 49ers' first offensive play of the second half when Allen helped Heitmann when he blocked down on Hampton. Allen then slid down the field and shoved linebacker Larry Foote with his left arm to lead the way for Frank Gore's 11-yard gain.
Inoltre sembra che l'intercetto di Smith non sia colpa sua ma di una cattiva lettura della difesa da parte del ricevitore designato Jacobs:
Taylor Jacobs has the 49ers' only TD reception, but he and quarterback Alex Smith were not on the same page on the previous possession, which led to an interception and 50-yard TD return.
On that particular pattern, if the Steelers are playing a Cover 2, Jacobs is suppose to release to the outside. If they're playing a Cover 3, he is supposed to "get to his depth" and expect the ball.
Jacobs read the defense as a Cover 3, while Smith accurately saw it as a "soft Cover 2." Smith is supposed to throw the pass before Jacobs makes his move.
So where was Smith supposed to throw the ball? Pretty much where Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden made the catch.
Ashley Lelie didn't exactly make the most of his limited playing time. He saw four snaps in the game, including one in which he ran a tentative route. Again, Smith made a good throw, but Lelie did not finish the route. He got his right hand on the ball but did not make the catch.

Personalmente Williams non mi ha mai convinto, credo sia stata una terza scelta buttata. Mi auguro di non dover dire la stessa cosa di Jason Hill, sempre inattivo nelle prime tre settimane.
