The Cardinals scored six times in the first three innings, then tacked on seven more runs in the fourth to go up 13-0. Left fielder Chris Duncan, who was limited last year because of a neck injury, hit a three-run homer off Freddy Garcia in the first then tripled to score Albert Pujols in the third.
Duncan went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs before being replaced in the sixth inning.
"It was one of those days that you think about books to read," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.
The Mets lost 15 players to the World Baseball Classic, including 11 from the 40-man roster, but Manuel didn't use that as an excuse Tuesday.
"That's a tough thing for us, but what we have to do, we have enough pitching here, we have to get that right," Manuel said.
Dopo la partita di ieri posso dire con certezza che Garcia, almeno per il primo periodo di stagione, dovrà scordarsi lo spot #5 della rotazione.
Nel recap della partita però, c'è una notizia ben più importante:
Forget Opening Day, Johan Santana's tender elbow might keep the Mets' ace from making his first start until the second series of the season.
Santana has yet to pitch in a spring training game for New York, which lost 15-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, and pitching coach Dan Warthen indicated the left-hander's schedule would put him on track to start the Mets' fifth game.
The two-time Cy Young winner is tentatively set to make his spring debut March 18, Warthen said.

Santana wants to start for Mets on opening day
Santana threw 46 pitches off a mound early Wednesday in his most ambitious and productive bullpen session since the start of spring training, and made it clear he wants to start for New York on April 6 in Cincinnati despite concerns over his tender elbow.
"I appreciate everything they're doing trying to protect me and trying to keep me healthy," Santana said. "But I'm a professional and I know exactly what it takes for me to be ready. I've been doing this for years now and I know exactly what I have to do and I'm pretty sure I'll be ready for opening day."
"All plans have got to have room for modification," Warthen said. "If he feels good (Thursday), I have no problem moving the schedule up. His arm strength is fine. We were all worried about the elbow - we didn't want that thing to fire up again - but he threw his slider and he looked great. He threw the ball really well today."
"I feel good," Santana said. "I threw all my pitches, I threw my breaking ball and everything was good. From now on it's just a matter of trying to get everything together, but I think big progress today."

Breve, ma altrettanto interessante articolo presente sul NY Post che riassume quanto visto durante la prima parte di Spring Training da parte dei quattro (anche se in realtà hanno lanciato solo in tre) contendenti allo spot #5 della rotazione.
Hernandez pitched two perfect innings against the Cardinals on Friday in his spring debut for the Mets. And with the other competition sidelined or struggling, he seemed to be the favorite to win the job. Then he pitched yesterday.
Garcia pitched in that same game against St. Louis on Friday, but retired two batters while allowing four runs (two earned). Garcia had a chance to redeem himself in another start against the Cardinals, but the results were similar. Four runs, two innings and two long home runs allowed.
Redding, who had to push back his throwing program because of a surgery on his foot, said he started throwing too often at the start of the spring. If Redding, who is expected to make his first appearance Sunday against the University of Michigan, can show he is ready and capable of getting outs, he could jump to front of this sorry pack.
Jon Niese gave up two runs in two innings against the Tigers. The problem for Niese is that if the Mets were sold on him than why would they bring in Garcia, Hernandez and Redding. So one would think he would need a dominant spring training to earn the spot. Not out of the question, but asking a lot from the 22-year-old.
Castro hammered a three-run homer off Balester in the fifth inning of yesterday's 6-4 loss to Washington and this was no ordinary fence-clearer. He blasted it over the 25-foot batter's eye in centerfield of Space Coast Stadium. The deep shot was Castro's second homer in two games, and afterward, he was fully aware that staying healthy this spring is crucial for him to keep his job.

Mets' Santana faces live hitters
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets ace Johan Santana doesn't see any reason why he won't be ready for opening day.
Queste le sue parole:
"I pitched today with no problems in my elbow or my arm or anything, so I am fine, and at the same time I was working on my pitches and I was able to command it, so that's what you want to see," Santana said.
"For being my first time facing hitters, I think it was pretty good," Santana said. "Everything was there -- breaking ball was there, my changeup was there, my arm speed, my legs are there. That's what you are looking for. You look for your legs to be there and to feel comfortable, and that's how I felt."

Non vale dovevi farlo lo scorso anno per celebrare degnamente le gesta dei rivali ora è facile sai che per circa 20 anni potrai dormire sonni tranquilli.
Ho già votato al sondaggio per ora Phila è prima!
