The free-agent signing period has barely started and the 49ers have already lost a player.
Guard Justin Smiley has agreed to terms with the Dolphins on a five-year, $25 million contract than includes a $9 million signing bonus, he said. He is scheduled to fly to Miami early Friday morning to sign the contract and make it official.

Altra notizia:
49ers signed RB DeShaun Foster to a two-year, $1.8 million contract.
How the mighty have fallen. At this price, Foster won't even be guaranteed a roster spot in San Francisco if Michael Robinson or Thomas Clayton has a big offseason. Foster still probably has the early hand to back up Frank Gore.

Altro update
According to Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat, there is word that the 49ers have agreed to terms with QB J.T. O'Sullivan (Lions), LB Dontarrious Thomas (Vikings) and RB DeShaun Foster (cut by the Panthers).
Terms of their deals are not yet known. Interest in O'Sullivan and Thomas was first reported earlier today by Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
O'Sullivan, originally drafted by the Saints, has also been on the Packers, Vikings, Patriots and Panthers. He spent last season with the Lions, Mike Martz's old team. Last season, he completed 13 of 26 attempts for 148 yards, one touchdown and 2 interceptions.
Thomas has spent four seasons with the Vikings. He has 143 tackles and 1.5 sacks during those four seasons.
Last season, Foster had 247 carries for 876 yards and 3 touchdowns with Carolina.

--The 49ers exercised the Alex Smith buy-back clause. The team had until March 15 to buy back two more years on his contract. It means it's a six-year deal (instead of a four-year deal), and a vote of confidence.
"It's the same thing the Giants had with Eli (Manning) and they bought it back," McCloughan said. "It just goes to show that we have faith in him to be our guy.
"It wasn't a tremendous amount of money, but it was enough that shows we have faith in him to be our guy," McCloughan said. "It just shows we believe with him and Shaun (Hill) going out there that we have two quarterbacks that can compete for the starting job and feel really good that the winner of that is going to be a dang-good quarterback for us. From a business standpoint, if we didn't think he was worth it, we wouldn't have done it."

Estensione contrattuale per Robinson: i tre RB dovrebbero essere Gore, Foster, Robinson (third down back)
UPDATE: The 49ers sign RB Michael Robinson to a three-year contract extension through the 2012 season, according to ESPN.com. This move makes all kinds of sense, considering the 49ers love everything Robinson brings to the table both as a special-teamer and on offense. I see this move remaining consistent with the 49ers' pursuit of DeShaun Foster. Robinson is seen more as a third-down back, and probably is not ready to take the full load at the position, if he were needed. Robinson had two years remaining on his original four-year, $2.08 million contract. He was a fourth-round pick (No. 100 overall) in the 2006 draft.

RB DeShaun Foster (cut by the Panthers - 2-yr / $1.8 mil)
Buon prezzo secondo me

As for Thomas, Seifert said that he is incredibly fast and athletic and is a very sharp guy. He did say, however, that there was a sense that Thomas never tapped his potential in Minnesota. When I told him that the vacant Ted linebacker spot in San Francisco required a player who wasn’t shy about taking on blocks, Seifert said that Thomas was more of a chase-down-the-ball carrier type player than a pound-the-line-of scrimmage player. That could mean that Thomas is being signed more as a back-up to Patrick Willis than as a replacement for Derek Smith. Perhaps the move is designed to allow Jeff Ulbrich, who is now Willis’ back-up, a chance to slide to Ted. Maybe it’s designed to light a fire under Brandon Moore. It is interesting to note that Thomas had one of his best games in his brief career (and one of his rare starts) against the 49ers in 2006 when he finished with eight tackles and a sack.

Jonas Jennings will be with the 49ers, McCloughan said. He's under contract and he'll go through the offseason program and compete for a starting job. They are not looking to trade him. He could play either side of the line.
