Ilitch holdings, parent company of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers, announced today the hiring of Tom Wilson to the same role he held as president and CEO of Palace Sports & Entertainment.
“We’re pleased to announce Tom Wilson has joined the Ilitch team,” said Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings.
One of Wilson’s first duties will be to help figure out where the Red Wings will play next season. The team did not renew its lease at Joe Louis Arena, home to the Wings since 1979. The building is outdated, lacking, among other features, mid-level suites. Ideally, the Wings will get a new arena -- until which time options include renovating the Joe, or moving to the Palace temporarily.
“Certainly, there’s a need there -- we’ve been studying that issue for some period of time,” Ilitch said. “No doubt about it, Tom’s going to be leading our thinking and our initiatives in that regard. He clearly has the resume and the experience, and he’s done all of that throughout his career. … It’s something we have been working on and will continue to work on in our organization, and Tom’s going to be spearheading that for sure.”
Wilson, who resigned from his Palace job last week, was instrumental in getting the Palace built some 20 years ago, and also oversaw the purchase and eventual sale of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning.
Speaking glowingly of joining the Ilitch team, Wilson acknowledged the Wings’ arena situation is a primary focus.
“I understand the focus being absolutely on the arena,” he said. “But there’s a lot of things that they’re going to keep close to the vest, and I think that’s one of the great things about working here, is that there is so much on the drawing board that, slowly but surely, these things are going to come to light. I haven’t had a chance to prioritize them yet, but I think you’ll see things start happening around here in the very near future.”
He also coolly deflected a question about how to pay for a new arena -- specifically whether it would be funded by private money as the Palace was.
“It won’t come from my money,” Wilson said with a laugh. “I don’t have that much.”
Wilson also said “it’s not real uncomfortable” to now essentially be competing (for concerts and such) against the company he was a big part of for three decades.
“The big picture is, if the Tigers win a pennant, that’s great for everybody,” Wilson said. “If the Pistons win a championship, that’s great for everybody. So there’s a natural competition, and I know it will be there, and it will be a little awkward, but you know what? They’re going to like to beat me just as much as I’m going to like to beat them, so that makes it fun.”
As far as the sports teams go, Ilitch said Wings general manager Ken Holland will continue to report directly to owner Mike Ilitch, as will Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski.
E sti cavoli. Per cosa? Per prendere un altro 0-4 dai Cavs? Me ne sbatto.
80's Sidney Moncrief - Michael Jordan - James Worthy - Buck Williams - Robert Parish + Dennis Rodman - X-Man - Mark Jackson - Bernard King
90's Tim Hardaway - Mitch Richmond - Anthony Mason - Charles Oakley - Hakeem Olojuwan + Latrell Sprewell - PJ Brown - Dennis Rodman - Mookie Blaylock
