If you didn't know it was Kids Day on Sunday at PNC Park, you would have wondered about the hundreds of small children running the bases after the Pirates' 4-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants.
You might have thought they were auditioning to replace shortstop Jack Wilson and second baseman Freddy Sanchez.
Somebody has to.
Goodness knows who will man those positions if Sanchez and Wilson are dealt within the next 11 days, as seems entirely possible now that contract "negotiations" have broken down.
The immediate forecast for the Pirates' infield, then, is bleak.
The outfield, a bit better.
A lot better, actually.
The prospect of Lastings Milledge, Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones playing together, left to right, is enticing. It might even keep somebody interested in this team past the start of Steelers camp.
You're talking about three pretty good athletes with extra-base potential in their bats.
That doesn't mean all three are locks to be impact players — or even everyday players. But McCutchen sure looks the part, and the other two will be mighty interesting to track for the next two-and-a-half months.
It's hard to imagine Milledge won't arrive soon from Triple-A Indianapolis. He's batting .448 in eight games there.
