Steelers Release Larry Foote
Posted by Mike Florio on May 4, 2009, 4:58 p.m. EDT
As expected, the Steelers have released linebacker Larry Foote.
“Larry has been a big part of our success, but unfortunately the realities of the salary cap made this decision inevitable,” Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said. “We wish Larry and his family nothing but the best as he moves forward with his career.”
The move implies that the Steelers were unable to find a trade partner for Foote, even for only a seventh-round pick.
Word of the looming move first appeared right here last week. Others confirmed the story, but then the Steelers called the reports erroneous.
They kept Foote through the weekend, possibly in the hopes that an inside linebacker might tear an ACL during the first wave of underwear practices.
When all emerged unscatched, the Steelers had no market, and no options.
Cutting Foote clears up $2.885 million in cap space, making him an unrestricted free agent.
He has said that he’d like to sign with the Lions. For that reason, we think that his physical should include careful testing for post-concussion syndrome.

The Steelers are hosting free agent LB Napoleon Harris on Thursday, according to Profootballtalk.com.
Harris, 30, is a journeyman but it's surprising he's drawn such scant interest after finishing 2008 as Minnesota's starting middle linebacker. He wasn't an obvious liability. Harris would be an inside backup in Pittsburgh.
