Ma tanto anche con McLouth si andava sotto i .500 e ultimamente, oltretutto, batteva poco.
Di certo non è una perdita da "passeggiata", ma tanto per non cavarci nulla con un gold glover e non cavarci nulla senza, la differenza non c'è.

Con l'occhio globale (BAY+NADY+NATE) c'è un po' da piangere...ma nell'effettività delle cose...

Purtroppo 4 o 5 battute velenose degli Astri e una barbagia urticante da 4 punti sul finale hanno rullato i Pirati.
(Per quello che ho potuto vedere da un Condensed Games mancante di parti) Il monte rimane ancora una delle più grandi incognite per i buccos.

Vinto, ma che fatica. Purtroppo, come già detto, il monte dei Pirati non permette secondo me di stare tranquilli e quindi ogni partita può trasformarsi da un successone (infatti le mazze risuonano) oppure in una sconfitta (al suono, invece, della pioggia di fuoricampo).

Oggi abbiamo vinto, domani, non si ha certezza...

Su The Hardball Times Baseball Annual 2009 c’è un interessante articolo di Victor Wang che vuole valutare il valore dei prospetti scambiati in una trade.

Ad esempio quando Yankees e Red Sox cercarono di acquistare Santana dai Twins chi offriva di più? Ovviamente il valore di Santana è noto.
Mentre il valore di giocatori giovani o di prospetti è più incerto; bisogna presumere alcuni fattori che sono soltanto proiezioni nel futuro, non certezze.
Alla fine tutto viene tradotto in soldi.
Santana vale X. I prospetti offerti valgono Y.
Ovviamente se X vale più di Y l’affare lo fa chi prende Santana.

Comunque Wang porta un altro esempio.
La trade di Jason Bay-Manny Ramirez e 4 prospetti.
Valutata dal punto di vista dei Pirates.

Vi risparmio tutto il ragionamento che c’è dietro, ma la valutazione è fatta bene, secondo quello che posso capire io. Si assegna un valore ad ogni prospetto, in base al draft, a quello che ha fatto nelle minors, si fa un ranking dei prospetti, etc...

Insomma alla fine – dal punto di vista di Pittsburgh le conclusioni sono queste:

1. Aver scambiato Bay non ha peggiorato le già microscopiche chance dei Pirates di andare ai playoff nel 2008 e, molto probabilmente, neppure quelle del 2009.
2. Al momento della trade Bay valeva circa $10 milioni.
Il gruppo dei quattro prospetti che Pittsburgh ha ricevuto cambia molto di valore in base a come consideriamo Andy LaRoche.
Se lo consideriamo come il prospetto che, ad esempio, Baseball America descriveva e valutava prima dell’esordio MLB i Pirates si sono portati a casa $27.5 milioni.
Se invece lo consideriamo una mezza delusione visti gli iniziali risultati della sua carriera MLB – che s’intende potrebbe migliorare – Pittsburgh ha comunque portato a casa $18.3 milioni.
In ogni caso Pittsburgh ci ha guadagnato.
Se LaRoche dovesse diventare un buon giocatore MLB i Pirates avrebbero davvero fatto un affarone.

Questo non è casuale. Il Front Office dei Pirates è stato completamente rivoluzionato dall’arrivo di Neal Huntington. Le sue mosse sono criticabili, ma devono essere attentamente valutate. Dietro c’è un ragionamento ben preciso.

Tra l'altro sul sito dei Bucs Huntington ha scritto una lettera ai tifosi riguardo alla trade di McLouth.

Per la cronaca, Adam LaRoche è sul mercato. Vediamo cosa ne ottiene.

On the heels of this Wednesday's trade with the Atlanta Braves, I felt it was important that you hear directly from me as to why this move brings us closer to our goal of building a consistent championship organization and providing you a team of which you will be proud.

Obviously this was a very difficult decision as Nate is a quality player and person. We knew this move was not going to be popular in the clubhouse with our players or among our fan base who have suffered through a long stretch of losing seasons. Despite recognizing the probable unpopularity of this trade, we believed it to be the right step for our organization and made a sound baseball decision.

The quality and quantity of the players we received in this trade was the crucial component to this trade. We are excited about the three young players we received. We have been interested in and closely monitored all three of these players for some time as they are highly regarded by us and by most within the industry.

Charlie Morton is a power right-handed starting pitcher with upside, who should be ready to help us this year in Pittsburgh. In fact, in his first outing for our Triple-A affiliate, he tossed seven scoreless innings, giving up only four hits while striking out seven. Jeff Locke is an intriguing young left handed starter with the frame, athleticism and stuff to become a quality major league starting pitcher. Gorkys Hernandez is a dynamic athlete who has the speed and potential to become an above average everyday major league outfielder. It is worth noting that these three players were rumored to be sought by the Padres when they were talking to the Braves about trading former Cy Young award winner Jake Peavy.

Additionally, Andrew McCutchen has proven that he is ready to take the next step and begin his career at the Major League level. Andrew has done what we have asked of him in Triple-A and showed he was ready for the challenges of the Major League level. Andrew is an intelligent, hard working player that has shown the present ability to play impact defense in centerfield. While we do not expect Andrew to replace Nate's power production immediately, Andrew is an exciting top-of-the-order player who proved this spring that he can be an exciting part of a productive offense.

Ultimately, to become a championship team we need more championship caliber players at all levels. As difficult as these types of trades are to make, they are an important part of the talent acquisition and development process that will position us to be a consistent championship caliber organization sooner rather than later.

I understand why some people at first glance may believe this move was financially motivated, but I can assure you that this was strictly a baseball decision. In fact, our owner Bob Nutting was as surprised as some of our fans when we sought his approval for this trade. I am grateful that he has the faith in me, our baseball operations staff and the processes we have in place to approve a move like this, despite the risk of public backlash on him personally and the organization as a whole. Furthermore, I am appreciative that he continues to provide us with the resources necessary to build a championship caliber organization. Whether we sought to build our new facilities in Bradenton and the Dominican Republic, sign our young major league players to long-term deals, triple our amateur signing bonus budget in order to be aggressive in acquiring talent both domestically and internationally or significantly increase our scouting and development budgets, Bob was willing to provide the resources necessary to make these fundamental changes.

We have said several times that tough decisions will need to be made as we build and sustain a championship caliber organization. The decision to trade Nate was perhaps the most difficult one both personally and professionally that we have made to date. Tough decisions are not always popular. However, we have a singular focus on our goal of building an organization that can consistently compete for championships, not simply finish above .500. The organizational talent level has been vastly improved during the past two years and, as a result, we are a much stronger organization and closer to our ultimate goal.

Non so, la questione è semplice apparentemente: se i giovani prospetti diventassero tutti dei McLouth o dei Bay (ma anche qualcosina meno, leggasi "faccio il mio dovere, senza brillare") questa strategia sarebbe un'ottima strategia...se però disgraziatamente fossero tutti "poco produttivi" ci saremo buttati la proverbiale zappa sui piedi.

Il rischio....la salvezza o il fallimento (anche se peggio di così credo che sia proprio difficile fare...)

E' un grande e sinceramente, per come stava nadando McLouth, per come la vedo io, non ce lo fa rimpiangere.
Oltretutto che Nate ieri ha tirato fuori ciò che non si vedeva a Pittsburgh da tempo (

).
Però, anche se abbiamo perso, abbiamo tenuto testa ai più forti Braves e sono felice.

Comunque mi chiedo perchè il replay non sia utilizzato anche per le chiamate sulle basi, magari con la posssibilità d'utilizzarlo, appellandosi, solo 2 volte a partita...

Nella sagra dei K ecco che i Pirati agguantano la vittoria.
L'errore dell'arbitro in prima ha involontariamente pareggiato quello ai nostri danni di due giorni fa.
Quindi tuttoaposto..e....RISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!!

I Pirates perdono contro i più che abbordabili Tigers. Snell è stato veramente bravo, ma purtroppo Grabow ha poi concesso subito un HR. Non tanto bene le mazze anche se Morgan sta veramente dimostrando d'essere un vero e proprio jolly (Roger) e Mc sta crescendo sempre di più.

Sono comunque soddisfatto.
