Kessel being treated
By Greg Lee, Globe Staff
The Bruins say rookie center Phil Kessel is being treated for a medical issue not related to hockey.

The announcement came today in a brief statement released by the Bruins at the request of Kessel's family. The statement did not disclose the medical issue and said there would be no update at this time on the 19-year-old's condition.

The statement also asked that the privacy of Kessel's family be respected.

Kessel was the Bruins' first choice, and the fifth player chosen overall, in the 2006 NHL entry draft. He's played in 27 games this season, scoring nine points on five goals and four assists.

The Madison, Wisconsin native came to Boston after playing one season for the University of Minnesota.

BOSTON -- Less than one month after being diagnosed with cancer, rookie center Phil Kessel is rejoining the Boston Bruins.

The Bruins on Sunday recalled Kessel from Providence of the American Hockey League, where he had been on a conditioning assignment.

The fifth overall pick in the 2006 draft, Kessel had been sidelined since Dec. 11 after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. The 19-year-old underwent successful surgery later that day at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Kessel played two games in his stint in the minors, scoring the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday.

The rookie, who last played in Boston's 5-1 loss to New Jersey on Dec. 9, has appeared in 29 games with the Bruins this season, recording five goals and four assists.

In other moves, the Bruins also recalled goaltender Philippe Sauve and assigned center Yan Stastny and goaltender Hannu Toivonen to Providence.

Acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes on Nov. 14, Sauve is 0-0-0 with a 5.80 goals-against average in two appearances with Boston this season.

Bruins - After the game, the Bruins activated Thomas from the injured list and sent backup Tuuka Rask to Providence of the AHL.

Auld?  :sbadat:
