Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Joey Galloway is visiting with the Steelers today as the team begins its search for replacements for departed free agents.

Galloway, 37, who appeared in only nine games last season because of injuries, was brought in as a possible replacement for No. 3 receiver Nate Washington, who signed last week with the Tennessee Titans.

Steelers lost three UFAs: Faneca, Haggans and Brian St. Pierre. They signed two UFAs: Moore and Fox. If we had lost only Faneca, and not signed any UFAs, then we would be getting a third-round compensatory pick and probably among the first few allocated for that round. However, the financial and performance disparity between the two UFAs we signed, and the two we lost, might result in us getting less than a third-rounder. Moore got about $2 million in the first year of a three-year contract, while Fox got about $650,000 in a one-year deal. Haggans and St. Pierre both signed one-year deals at around $1 million. We paid only $300,000 more for 2008 but also have Moore under contract for two more years. There was a much wider discrepancy in their performances. St. Pierre did not play a game (perhaps a crucial point) and Haggans played only 11 games before he was injured. Moore filled in as a starter and was generally outstanding as a back-up, third-down back, as was Fox as one of the leaders of special teams and getting some defensive snaps. Based on what we know of the compensatory rules, it seems likely we will get less than a third-rounder. But the NFL never publicly explains how their formula works and they may place more of an emphasis on the dollar difference than the performance difference. Faneca’s huge salary is well above the threshhold that would normally determine a third-rounder so … who knows. In terms of playing time, free agency was a sawoff. But we technically did lose an extra player and the financial difference between players gained and lost in 2008 was about $7.5 million dollars. On that basis alone we should get a third-rounder. However my opinion is that the pick will be lower, most likely a fourth-rounder. We will find out for sure in about three weeks.

Ryan Clark is a decent player when healthy, but the injury-prone free safety turns 30 in October. His contract also expires after the 2009 NFL season, so I can't imagine Pittsburgh re-signing him.

Enter Sean Smith, a 6-4, 214-pound defensive back whom Mike Mayock compared to NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount. With the Anthony Smith experiment officially over, the Steelers will need someone to take over next to Troy Polamalu in 2010, or even this upcoming season once Clark gets hurt again.

The person I would want next to me in a dark alley is Joey Porter. I know that if anything goes down, he has my back, no matter what.

Rifirmato Andre Frazier.

With all of their starters under contract, the Pittsburgh Steelers began the process of locking up key backups by reaching a two-year agreement with linebacker Andre Frazier. Frazier, according to a source, agreed to a two-year, $1.375 million contract that included a $125,000 signing bonus.

Steelers sign linebacker Arnold Harrison
Monday, March 16, 2009
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Although they still have not signed anyone else's free agent, the Steelers signed another one of their own today.

Linebacker Arnold Harrison signed a one-year contract to return to the team. He spent last season on injured reserve and was not tendered an offer as a restricted free agent this year, making him unrestricted.

The Steelers today also entertained Penn State center A.Q. Shipley, whose visit does not count against their 30-man limit of college players because he is from Moon. Last week, the Steelers entertained two Pitt players, linebacker Scott McKillop and center C.J. Davis.
