The Packers have designated the Monday Night Football preseason opener against the Bengals as the 48th annual Bishop's Charities Game, a charitable contest initiated in 1961 by Vince Lombardi and the Diocese of Green Bay that has raised more than $3.4 million. Green Bay and Cincinnati last met in the preseason in 2006, also a Monday night contest.

In the second weekend of NFL preseason action, Green Bay will travel west to take on the 49ers in San Francisco. The two clubs have not met in the preseason since 1975. The Packers then travel to Denver to face the Broncos in the third preseason contest. Green Bay and Denver last met in preseason action in 2001.

The Packers and Titans will close out the preseason at Lambeau Field in the 59th annual Upper Midwest Shrine Game. The tradition, which began in 1950, has raised more than $3.1 million for the Midwest Shrine's burn centers and hospitals for crippled children. Green Bay has won four in a row, and eight of its last nine, in the Shrine series. The two clubs will meet in the preseason finale for a seventh consecutive year, as the league allows teams to determine one of their preseason opponents.

Other than the Cincinnati contest, exact dates and times for the Packers' other three preseason games are to be determined. All three will be broadcast by CBS Sports and Green Bay's WFRV-TV (Ch.5), in conjunction with Milwaukee's WTMJ-TV, over a nine-station network throughout the state of Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and Northeastern Minnesota. In addition to WFRV-TV and WTMJ-TV, the games are televised over WKOW/ABC, Madison, Wis.; WAOW/ABC, Wausau/Rhinelander, Wis.; WXOW/ABC, La Crosse, Wis.; WQOW/ABC, Eau Claire, Wis.; WYOW/ABC, Eagle River, Wis.; WJMN/CBS, Marquette, Mich.; and KQDS-TV/FOX, Duluth, Minn./Superior, Wis.

The league is expected to release the remainder of the regular-season schedule later this month.

The Packers will kick off the 2008 regular season at Lambeau Field in a Monday Night Football contest against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8, the 95th installment in the border rivalry. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

cmq sinceramente mi sembrerebbe strano. su un blog ieri avevo letto che brett è in contatto con mccarthy e negli ultimi tempi si è dedicato alla famiglia (disneyland) e a lavorare nella sua fattoria.

FAVRE SAYS HE’S NOT COMING BACK

Posted by Mike Florio on April 4, 2008, 10:50 a.m.

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported that the agent for Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been quietly gauging possibilities for a trade of the retired signal-caller. The agent, Bus Cook, called the report “absolutely false.”

Regardless of whether Cook was indeed trying to line up a new gig, Favre says that he isn’t returning.

“That’s the last thing I’m thinking about,” Favre told Peter King of SI.com. “I have no idea where that came from, but it certainly didn’t come from me. I’m happy about my decision and I haven’t once said, ‘I wonder if I made the wrong decision.’ I know it’s the right one.’

“It’s crazy to me that I’m the guy they’re all talking about, and the story is out there everywhere, and I have nothing to do with it,” Favre said. “It’s not something I’m thinking about. It’s kind of funny. Even when I’m retired, they won’t let me stay retired.”

But the “they” here might very well be Favre’s agent. If the Times story is accurate, then Cook is the one who’s stirring up the trouble.

Favre to greet Pope

Pope Benedict XVI will be visiting the United States this week and retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre will be there to greet him.

An open air mass is being held Thursday at the 45,000 seat Nationals Park in Washington D.C.

"The large video screen at the stadium will show 15-minute messages from a variety of American Catholics welcoming the pope to America before the Mass Thursday, including a presentation by retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre," reports Bill Novak of the Capital Times.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was also reportedly invited to the event, but it is unknown whether he will attend.

Favre's jersey retirement to come early

Packers President Mark Murphy said the team is looking at one of the first four home games to retire Brett Favre's jersey.

Murphy said the team wanted to do it early in the season in order to get the best possible weather.

That means it will be one of four games:

-- Sept. 8 vs. Minnesota (6 p.m., ESPN)
-- Sept. 21 vs. Dallas (7:15 p.m., NBC)
-- Oct. 5 vs. Atlanta (Noon, Fox)
-- Oct. 19 vs. Indianapolis (3:15 p.m., CBS)

The Packers will present those four options to Favre and ask for his input before a decision is made.

The Green Bay Packers will retire Brett Favre's No. 4 at the team's season opener, Monday night, Sept. 8, vs. the Minnesota Vikings, Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy announced Thursday.

"The season-opening game is always an exciting event, and now we're very pleased to add the retirement of Brett's No. 4 to that evening," said Murphy. "It will make for an electric atmosphere at Lambeau Field, as well as a great opportunity for our fans around the country to share in it while watching the game on the national broadcast.

"Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy and I looked at the entire schedule and felt the first game would be an ideal time to have the event. I spoke with Brett, as did Ted and Mike, about which game to choose. Ultimately, through our communications, we decided the first game would work great."

Planning for the ceremony is underway with further details to be announced at a later date.

Favre's No. 4 will become the sixth number retired by the storied franchise. Other retired Packers numbers include the No. 14 of wide receiver Don Hutson (1951), No. 3 of fullback Tony Canadeo (1952), No. 15 of quarterback Bart Starr (1973), No. 66 of linebacker Ray Nitschke (1983) and No. 92 of defensive end Reggie White (2005). All five bearers of the previously retired numbers are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Training camp starts July 28
By Tom Silverstein
Wednesday, Apr 23 2008, 05:35 PM

Green Bay -- Mike McCarthy's third training camp with the Packers will get off to a late start because of the Monday night start to the exhibition season.

The club announced it's schedule from post-draft to training camp start on Wednesday and the first practice of the official start of the season won't be until Monday, July 28. The Packers are going to lose two days of training camp because the collective bargaining agreement dictates that a team can't open camp more than 15 days before it's first exhibition game.

Because the Packers open up against Cincinnati on Monday, Aug. 11, they will not be able to practice the weekend of the 26th and 27th. In previous years, the Packers have started on Saturday or Sunday.

The new schedule made it unworkable for McCarthy to hold joint practices with the St. Louis Rams, who may be training in southeastern Wisconsin this year. The Packers would only have a handful of practices together before the Rams came in sometime around the weekend of Aug. 4 for joint practices and a scrimmage.

The Rams have since worked out a home-and-home practice agreement with Tennessee.

Here's the Packers' schedule, according to Packers.com:

Packers' on-field schedule
May 2-4: Rookie Orientation Camp (Don Hutson Center)
May 19-June 12: OTA sessions (Ray Nitschke Field, weather permitting, on May 21 & 29, June 4 & 11)
June 17-19: Mandatory mini-camp (Ray Nitschke Field, weather permitting)
July 28: First training camp practice (Clarke Hinkle Field)
