Packers re-sign Bigby
By Tom Silverstein
Friday, Mar 21 2008, 10:27 AM
Safety Atari Bigby, whose contract expired at the end of last season, has signed his one-year tender.
Bigby is an exclusive rights free agent, which means he doesn't have enough years in the league to qualify for restricted or unrestricted free agency. Last season was his second year in the National Football League, which means he will qualify for restricted free agency after this year.
Bigby made a base salary of $360,000 last year. In addition, he picked up $253,177 from the player performance pool, which is a league-wide fund created to reward players with low base salaries who play a lot.
Bigby's take in the performance pool was the highest of any Packer. His base salary this year will be $445,000.
Last year, he started 16 games and finished with 86 tackles, five interceptions and nine passes defended.
On Wednesday, two other exclusive rights free agents - tight end Tory Humphrey and fullback John Kuhn -- signed their contracts. Running back Ryan Grant is the remaining exclusive rights free agent still unsigned.

Davis announces retirement, joins staff
By Greg A. Bedard
Wednesday, Mar 26 2008, 11:17 AM
Green Bay - Veteran longsnapper Rob Davis announced his retirement from the Packers on Wednesday and has been named the director of player development by general manager Ted Thompson, the team announced.
Davis, a 12-year veteran, was the Packers' longsnapper for 11 seasons and his 167 games played ranks third in team history behind Brett Favre (255) and Forrest Gregg (187).
Davis and Favre were the last remaining players from the 1997 Super Bowl team.
"This transition for me is an example of player development at work, as we try to assist players for life after football," Davis said in a statement. "I'm very grateful for the opportunity to have played 11 years for the best organization in professional sports and I look forward to making an impact on the players I will work with."
Thompson is grateful that Davis, 39, is remaining with the franchise.
"We're looking forward to having Rob evolve into his new role within our organization," Thompson said. "He's been a tremendous contributor as a player and I have no doubt that he will carry that commitment and enthusiasm to his position. He is someone who has always been respected as a leader and mentor in the locker room and we know that will continue."
Tim Terry had served as the director of player development since last July, with Davis assisting. Terry also continued to perform his duties with the team's personnel department.
The Packers announced the signing of longsnapper Thomas Gafford on Tuesday, which was a signal that Packers were moving in a different direction at the position. The team will likely bring in more competition at the position.

Packers in Monday night opener?
By Tom Silverstein
Monday, Mar 31 2008, 10:10 AM
Palm Beach -- The NFL is expected to announce it's Monday night opener today and the Packers are a strong candidate to be one of the participants.
The buzz here is that the Packers will be one of the teams, but apparently the league has been considering several possibilities so it won't be known until later exactly who will be playing in the first Monday Night Football broadcast of the season. If the Packers are involved, it could be against Dallas or it could be a division game against a rival like the Minnesota Vikings.
The Packers would be a semi-attractive draw given it will be the first game of the Aaron Rodgers era. It's also possible the Packers could retire quarterback Brett Favre's number on that day.
The schedule will reportedly open with a Thursday night game between defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants vs. the Washington Redsdkins. Other than that, not much is known about the 2008 schedule.
The full schedule won't be released today, just the nationally televised games the first weekend and possibly the Thanksgiving Day games.
In addition to the early games, the league's compensatory draft picks will be released sometime during the meetings, possibly as early as today. The Packers are in line for at least one pick, although it probably won't be very high. Their key losses in free agency were running back Ahman Green and tight end David Martin.
The formula for compensatory picks takes into account the size of a player's contract with his new team and his production in the ensuing season. Green signed a four-year, $23 million contract with the Texans, but played in just six games because of injury.
Martin signed a three-year, $3.57 million contract and caught 34 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns.

Martin signs tender
By Tom Silverstein
Tuesday, Apr 1 2008, 10:50 AM
Palm Beach, Fla. -- Exclusive rights free agent Ruvell Martin signed his one-year tender offer Monday, according to a source with access to the NFL personnel notices.
Under his status, Martin was not eligible to sign with another team. The Packers were required to send him a qualifying offer of at least the minimum wage in order to keep his services.
The Packers' only remaining exclusive rights free agent is running back Ryan Grant. Previously, safety Atari Bigby, tight end Tory Humphrey and fullback John Kuhn had signed their tenders.

Ma non potevano fare GB-CHI alla prima... Favre lo facevamo ritirare contro i rivali di sempre di GB, pacche sulle spalle, abbracci e ce la giocavamo meglio che a Indianapolis.

Ex-Packers QB Brett Favre Re-Thinking Retirement?
Brett Favre could be having second thoughts about retirement. According to a Los Angeles Times report, the former Green Bay Packers quarterback, who announced his retirement last month, is contemplating a comeback with another team. Citing NFL sources, the Times reported Thursday that Favre has been quietly talking with teams about their interest in trading for the three-time NFL Most Valuable Player. On March 4, Favre, who played with the Packers for 16 seasons, announced his retirement during an emotional press conference at Lambeau Field. However, Favre, 38, has yet to give written notice of his retirement to the league or players’ union. Favre’s agent, James “Bus” Cook, told the Times he was not aware of his client’s possible interest in resuming his career. “That’s news to me,” Cook said. “I don’t think it has anything to do with anything. He’s retired, period, point blank.” During his press conference, Favre denied he retired because the Packers did not make a more aggressive attempt to sign wide receiver Randy Moss. However, Favre’s decision came one day after the New England Patriots re-signed Moss to a three-year contract worth $27 million.
