Beh beh...mi pare che la strada intrapesa sia quella, e si parla anche di firmare qualcuno di forte segno che la voglia di investire c'è...che poi non riescano da subito a vincere la East è possibilissimo, anzi quasi certo, però hanno imboccato la strada giusta.

L'ottimismo deriva dal fatto che almeno ci potrebbe essere un po' di competizione. E' l'ottimismo che ogni squadra che non siano i Pirates di Littlefield si merita, giustamente, quando chiude un buon trade. E questo è stato oggettivamente un buon trade per loro. Almeno a livello di mazze, il talento c'è a questo punto. L'anno prossimo potrebbero avere questo lineup:

C - Jesus Flores 80 OPS+ in carriera.
1B - Nick Johnson 125 OPS+ in carriera
2B - Ronnie Belliard 120 OPS+ l'anno scorso
SS - Cristian Guzman 104 OPS+ l'anno scorso (con .316 BA)
3B - Ryan Zimmerman 110 OPS+ in carriera
LF - Josh Willingham 117 OPS+ in carriera
CF - Elijah Dukes 125 OPS+ l'anno scorso
RF - Austin Kearns 105 OPS+ in carriera

In più hanno giocatori con un potenziale enorme, ma ancora giovani o finora tartassati dagli infortuni, come Pena o Milledge. E' un lineup molto buono e molto profondo. Quali sono i problemi?

1) Il pitching è un disastro incredibile. Dico, la stella è Tim Redding! Ora c'è Olsen. Shawn Hill è ancora potenzialmente buono, ma è in direzione Mark Prior.
2) Nick Johnson non giocherà mai 150 partite. Neanche Dukes. Neanche Kearns. Neanche Pena. Neanche Zimmerman. Niente di niente.
Però se con un incredibile colpo di fortuna ce la facessero a non farsi male giocando a carte in aereo, beh... in quel caso saranno almeno competitivi, una squadra di baseball seria.

I Nationals stanno costruendo una squadra stranissima, fatta di giocatori con buon potenziale, ma "rifiutati" dalle altre squadre per diversi motivi. In primis per motivi clinici (ed infatti poi si rompono), ma anche caratteriali (Dukes, Olsen, Dmitri Young). Ovviamente se quei giocatori, pur dotati di talento, sono stati scartati, un motivo c'è. Però con questa strategia se in un anno le stelle si allineano, gli infortunati non si rompono e le teste calde evitano la galera, possono fare bene. Comunque non come i Rays, perchè a livello di pitchers è proprio il talento che manca...

The Braves are frustrated with the progress on the Jake Peavy talks, and will explore other options (especially once the free agent market opens Friday). Rosenthal says the Padres sent revised proposals to the Cubs and Braves yesterday, but those teams intend to stick with their offers. Will the Padres crack and make a deal before Friday?

la stella direi che è Lannan, molto meglio di Redding......

il senso del discorso comunque non cambia affatto.

No no, i Padres hanno fatto la loro controproposta ai Braves e ai Cachorros ma entrambe hanno mantenuto la proposta originale e il giornalista si chiede "traderanno Peavy prima di venerdì?"

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune writes today about how the Cubs' pursuit of Jake Peavy affects their efforts to re-sign pitchers Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood.

Sullivan believes Dempster would be less likely to give the Cubs a discount if they acquire Peavy, who is set to earn an average of $15.75MM per year. Jeff Blair, on the other hand, heard Dempster would be willing to give the Cubs a discount due to his desire to be part of a Cubs super-rotation. It seems that Dempster wants five years and $70MM. Sullivan says the Cubs offered $50MM over four years, while Ken Rosenthal pegged it as closer to Kyle Lohse's $41MM.

Would acquiring Peavy and retaining Dempster leave any money for Wood? Wood anchors the Cubs' pen, and his Chicago/Jim Hendry loyalty runs deep. Still, the Cubs would probably have to offer a multiyear deal. Unloading even half of Jason Marquis' $9.875MM could go a long way.

ESPN's Buster Olney has the latest on the Jake Peavy trade talks.

Olney says the Braves and Padres are making progress, despite Ken Rosenthal's report of Atlanta's frustration. Olney says the Braves would send Yunel Escobar and Gorkys Hernandez to the Padres, plus Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes. They're haggling over one last player, with the Padres eyeing southpaw Jeff Locke.

The Cubs are still in the mix, and a third team would be included to flip pitching to San Diego. One way or another, the Cubs would give up Josh Vitters and others.
