Alex Smith tears rotator cuff, out for the seasonBy Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Santa Clara, CA. -- The San Francisco 49ers received a major blow in offseason workouts, as MRI results show that quarterback Alex Smith sustained a serious injury to his throwing shoulder late in the afternoon.

Alex Smith
Smith, the first selection of the 2005 draft, was practicing with his receivers when the injury occurred. "I threw a deep seam route to Ashley (Lelie) when I felt a pop," said Smith. "My arm just fell limp after that and I couldn't really move it."

The injury is considered potentially career-threatening and may keep the 22-year-old Smith out well into 2008. "The MRI results showed significant damage to the glenohumeral joint," said 49ers' team physician Dr. Michael Dillingham. "Basically the arm came out of the socket and tore the surrounding tendons. He has a severely torn rotator cuff."

Smith, who threw for 2,890 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2006, was expected to lead the 49ers on a potential return to the playoffs after the team's free agency blitz netted several players including Lelie and Nate Clements. Veteran quarterback Trent Dilfer is expected to replace Smith in the starting lineup. The 49ers are also likely to add a free agent to fill in as the 3rd quarterback.

E ora chi gioca? Dilfer?

Fammi chiamare Alex...

Smiley vicino all'addio?
Smiley not in team's long-term plans
Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 10:39:23 PT - Printer-friendly version

According to ESPN, 49ers OT Justin Smiley may not be in San Francisco's long-term plans.

With still more than $11 million in salary-cap cash after signing centerpiece RB Frank Gore to a four-year contract extension, the odds are against the Niners using a chunk of that money to re-up with OT Justin Smiley, as had been rumored late in the '06 season. We now hear the consensus seems to be that the undersized Smiley, whose contract runs out at the end of the '07 season, does not fit in the Niners' long-term plans.

Smiley has been looking for a contract much larger than the team feels he deserves. Smiley was one of the more consistent and improved offensive lineman at training camp last year.

NINERS TO HONOR TRYOUT PROMISE

One of the contestants in a reality show that debuted on March 27 was hoping to get a tryout with an NFL team. Even though the program, titled The Great American Dream Vote, was cancelled by ABC after two sub-2.0 ratings performances, a league source tells us that the 49ers, who were lined up to give the guy a tryout if he had won the contest, will give him a tryout anyway.

Per the source, 43-year-old Jim Davis, who has said he can bench-press more than 500 pounds and run the 40 in 4.5 seconds, will get a look-see from the Niners on April 20, in conjunction with the team's assessment of local players who are not expected to be drafted on April 28 and 29.

The premise of the show was to let ordinary people make the case for the fulfillment of their dreams, with the studio audience and viewers whittling down the contestants, in American Idol style. The show was hosted by Donny Osmond.

Hey, maybe one of the contestants had a dream that he would witness the most public of Donny Osmond's many humiliations. If so, the dream has been realized.

49ers | Nolan wants Gore to receive fewer touches in 2007
Wed, 4 Apr 2007 19:18:55 -0700

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan is planning to keep RB Frank Gore fresh throughout the 2007 season. Nolan said he hopes Gore will touch the ball fewer than his 312 carries in 2006. "It would be nice to get somebody in there who could take some of the load. There's a lot of wear and tear on a running back who runs like he does. He doesn't shy away from too much and he's not a huge guy, although he's stocky and sturdy. He takes a lot of punishment."
