The defense never rested
Well, if you don’t count that second Seattle game.
At any rate, the 49ers‘ defense was a key all season, ranking third in the NFL. For all the talk about the revolution at quarterback – Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson and, yes, Colin Kaepernick – the adage that defense wins championships seems to hold true (admittedly, the Baltimore Ravens were 17th in the league in total defense, just ahead of the Raiders; but they got the better of Luck, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Kaepernick in the postseason to hoist the Lombardi Trophy). The 49ers’ defense allowed 17.1 points per game (second to Seattle’s 15.3 a game, and there’s your 2013 NFC West preview), allowed 294 yards a game, an NFC best; and was the conference’s best pass defense and second-best rush defense (behind Tampa Bay).
For the 49ers‘ offense, the season can effectively be cut in halves by quarterback – Alex Smith before the bye and Colin Kaepernick after the bye. The unit was productive under both. Smith went 6-2 in the first half, Kaepernick went 5-2 as a starter, and the team tied in the game they split time. In the playoffs, though, the evolution of the offense became more complete as San Francisco broke loose for nearly 35 points per game in what might be a positive sign for the future. The 49ers had more weapons than ever this season, including such trusty mainstays as running back Frank Gore and tight end Vernon Davis. Gore, who was spelled by effective young backs Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James, still ran for the second most yards in his career. As opposing defenses focused on Davis, wide receiver Michael Crabtree blossomed. Many others, such as receivers Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams, Delanie Walker and an outstanding blocking corps, also were vital.
Jack The Sack wrote:

Chris Mortensen of ESPN wrote that the market for 49ers’ quarterback Alex Smith is cold. According to Mortensen, the Browns signing Smith is a long shot, and the Jets apparently can’t afford him. The Chiefs are more interested in draft-eligible players and the 49ers would like to block any move to Arizona.
So where does that leave Smith? Is the solution keeping Smith with the team where he would earn $7.5 million as Colin Kaepernick’s backup?
Team chemistry has to be considered. Smith would likely be the good soldier, but what would other players think? 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said he is Alex Smith’s friend. If that’s the case, he wouldn’t keep Smith a 49er against his will.
Some players were upset Smith was benched; how would they react if he was forced to be a backup? That could have serious repercussions for team chemistry.
The solution? Tell Smith he can go anywhere he wants except Arizona, or he can stay with the 49ers. It may turn out that the best scenario for Smith and the 49ers is for Smith to stay in San Francisco red and gold.
Home: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams
Road: New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars (London), Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams
The 49ers game with Jacksonville already has a date, with the game set for Sunday, October 27. Given how the NFL likes to set up the travel for that game, the bye would be the week after that, and the 49ers will likely face one of their east coast opponents the week before. That would mean the Buccaneers or Redskins are most likely, with my money on the Redskins.

...a me sembrerebbe datato ormai. Some players were upset Smith was benched; how would they react if he was forced to be a backup? Cosa significa "forced to be a backup"?
