Ma la partita è persa in quello stupido inning con due out regalati. Anche se i commentatori danno la colpa ai doppi giochi.

Iniziata anche al Chase Field: Dontrelle Willis leggermente fuori controllo (1 IP, 3 BB, 9 strikes su 27 lanci al momento in cui scrivo) ma salvato dal DP di Glaus con uomini agli angoli nel primo inning. Buona partenza di Hanson con 2 K e 1 BB nella prima ripresa.

mah mi sembrano numeri di un Willis in perfetto controllo :D

Willis si salva anche nel secondo: di questo passo chiuderà con un no-hitter e una quindicina di BB. 1-2-3 per THK nel secondo, ma già 40 lanci per lui.

L'home-plate umpire è Angel Hernandez. :gazza:

Ci sono anche io per la partita in Arizona. Mi piace proprio il Chase Field, soprattutto quando è chiuso.

Concordo, uno dei ballpark che più mi piacciono. Intanto secondo balk della partita di Willis.

Andata anche la parte alta del terzo: Dontrelle ha iniziato a lanciare strike (30 su 58 lanci) ma la musica non cambia. Chipper ormai fatica a battere oltre l'infield, Heyward gira un ball in un poppone e i LOB salgono a quota 3 (0/5 RISP).

Piccola presentazione.

Arrieta finished his second full season in pro ball in Triple-A after showing improved control at Double-A in the first half of the year. Beyond the significant improvement in his control, he remains what he was: a four-pitch guy with no plus pitch but nothing below-average. His arm path is long but he repeats it well enough to throw strikes, although his command remains fringe-average at best. He knows how to change speeds and keep hitters off-balance, which may help him play up above the average repertoire. Two scouts with whom I spoke saw Arrieta in 2009 and tabbed him a No. 4 starter, but I wouldn't rule out him becoming a solid No. 3 with some command improvements and his feel for adding and subtracting from his fastball.

In terms of stuff, Arrieta is all there. He throws a 92-94 mph fastball that “has the action to generate swings and misses.” (Per Baseball America.) He also has a slider that BA says can be a good pitch “at times.” He also has a changeup that is a work in progress, and a curveball that is mostly reserved for lefties. Keith Law notes that Arrieta is ” a four-pitch guy with no plus pitch but nothing below-average.” That puts him in the No. 3 to No. 4 starter range, though as BA notes, his pure stuff probably puts him a bit higher than that.

What holds Arrieta back is his lack of command. All scouting sources I’ve seen make distinct note of that. He can get a bit wild inside the zone, which doesn’t bode well against major league hitters, especially of the caliber the Yankees’ lineup features. He also has a little problem with the walks. He handed out 56 free passes last season, when he pitched at both AA and AAA. That was the most in the Orioles’ system. He has already walked 34 in 73 innings this year, so it doesn’t look like something he’s improved on.

It seems like the Yankees hitters should be comfortable enough with Arrieta on the mound, despite never having seen him. He plays to their strengths, not only with the walks, but also the lack of command of pitches in the strike zone. Then again, the same could have been, and was, said about Brandon Morrow. Yet he shut down the Yanks offense. I can see Arrieta doing the same. If, for this one start, he throws tons of strikes he could give the Yanks fits.

There is little more exciting in baseball than fresh, young pitching. We’ve got to seen plenty of it in the past couple of years. Arrieta is the next on that list. While I’ll hope for the Yanks to put a few of his pitches on Eutaw Street, I am certainly excited to see the next crop of O’s pitchers.
