Penguins coach Michel Therrien provided another update on Malkin's condition and impending return, saying that the rookie center took part in limited contact drills with his teammates during practice on Friday. Therrien said that the 20-year-old could make his NHL debut as early as next week: "He's making some great progress. He's working really hard to get back into the lineup as soon as possible."

"Some bad news for Moreau and the Oilers. Moreau's dislocated shoulder will require surgery and he is not expected to return until March. The surgery will take place in the coming weeks when the swelling reduces. The left wing was injured in an altercation wtih Detroit's Danny Markov in the final minute and left the ice immediately in Edmonton's 3-1 win on Oct. 21. The Oilers originally thought they would lose the left wing for about a week."

Panthers winger Todd Bertuzzi is considering surgery on his lower back and will make a decision by the end of this week, his agent, Pat Morris, said Tuesday.

Morris said Bertuzzi has received two epidurals to subdue pinching pain that has spread from near a disc in his back down to his buttocks and right leg. Neither was effective.

At this point, Bertuzzi will either choose to receive up to three more epidurals or undergo a "routine" surgery, which will probably keep him out four to six weeks, Morris said. He's still gathering opinions, Morris said.
