If Tigers win World Series, they will be 10th different team to do so in last 12 years.
Unici a ripetersi: Red Sox e Cardinals.

- Barry Zito retired seven hitters in two pitches or fewer; Justin Verlander retired none. Every plate appearance the Giants had against Verlander lasted at least three pitches as he needed 98 pitches to get through the 19 hitters he faced.
- Justin Verlander: 3rd AL pitcher to lose 1st 3 career World Series starts He's the first since Lefty Williams, who was banned from baseball as part of the Black Sox Scandal.
- Justin Verlander was the first pitcher to start the All-Star Game and the World Series opener in the same year since the Yankees' David Wells in 1998. Verlander joined Dock Ellis (1971 Pirates) and Mort Cooper (1942 Cardinals) as the only pitchers to start and take the loss in the All-Star Game and the opening game of the World Series in the same year.
- This is the 2nd game in World Series history that featured: - A pitcher who had previously won a Cy Young Award relieving a pitcher who had previously won a Cy Young Award - 3 pitchers who had previously won Cy Young Awards pitching in the game In Game 3 of the 1983 World Series, Jim Palmer pitched in relief of Mike Flanagan. Steve Carlton started for the Phillies. Those 3 all had won Cy Youngs previously. Please note that for the purposes of this note, the Cy Young awards must be won BEFORE the year of the World Series.
- Pablo Sandoval's home run in the fifth inning went 435 feet, his longest home run in 2012
- Pablo Sandoval: only player to hit HR in 1st 3 PA of a World Series game Reggie Jackson walked in 1st PA, then hit HR in next 3 PA Babe Ruth in 1926 went HR, HR, BB, HR
- Pablo Sandoval saw 11 pitches in Game 1, three of which were in the strike zone. He swung at all three of those pitches, homering twice and hitting a single on the other.

- Madison Bumgarner did not allow a run in eight innings pitched in his first career World Series start (Game 4 of the 2010 Fall Classic against the Rangers) and he did not allow a run in seven innings in Game 2 of the 2012 World Series. Bumgarner is only the second pitcher in major-league history not to allow a run in each of his first two Fall Classic starts. Christy Mathewson pitched a shutout in each of his first three World Series starts, all against the Athletics in 1905 (Games 1, 3 and 5).
- Bumgarner is the first pitcher not to allow a run in his first 15 career innings pitched in the World Series since Bruce Hurst in 1986. Hurst also did not allow a run in his first 15 Fall Classic innings.
- Madison Bumgarner joined Barry Zito as the first pair of left-handed pitching teammates to start and win the first two games of a World Series since Ron Guidry and Tommy John did it for the Yankees in 1981 (New York's only wins in its Series loss to the Dodgers).
- The Giants and Tigers combined for no runs, four hits and 11 strikeouts through six innings of Game 2 of the 2012 World Series. It was only the fourth time in World Series history in which both teams combined had not scored a run with five or fewer hits and at least 10 strikeouts in the first six innings of a game. It also happened in the first game of the 1949 World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees, Game 3 of the 1972 series between the Reds and Athletics and Game 5 of the 2010 Fall Classic between the Giants and Rangers.
- The results through 2 games of the 2012 World Series for the Giants has been similar to their 2010 World Series. In Game 1, they won a battle of former Cy Young winners. In 2010 Tim Lincecum beat Cliff Lee, this year Barry Zito beat Justin Verlander. In Game 2, they shut out the AL team - 9-0 vs the Rangers in 2010, 2-0 this year.
Of the 52 teams to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series, 41 have gone on to win the title.
