English language requirements
It is essential that your English language skills are good enough for you to undertake an intensive and challenging academic course that is taught and examined in English.
If your first language is not English, one of the following formal qualifications is required:
* GCSE in English Language/IGCSE English Language (as a first language): at grade C or above
* IELTS: normally a minimum overall grade of 7.0, usually with 7.0 in each element
* For EU students, a high grade in English taken as part of a leaving examination (eg the European Baccalaureate, the French Baccalaureate, Abitur, etc) may be acceptable
* Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: at grade A
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: at grade A or B
All teaching at the University of Oxford is carried out in English (with the exception of some language specific teaching) and tutors must be convinced that you have sufficient fluency in written and spoken English to cope with your course from the start.
Therefore, all non-native English-speaking applicants (other than those who have been educated in the medium of English language during their two most recent years of study) must satisfy one of the following requirements:
* IELTS: overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in each of the four components),
* TOEFL (paper-based): overall score of 600, with a Test of Written English score of 5.5,
* TOEFL (computer-based): overall score of 250, with Test of Written English score of 5.5,
* TOEFL (internet-based): overall score of 100,
* Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): grade A,
* Cambridge Certificate for Proficiency in English (CPE): grade B,
* English Language GCSE, IGCSE or O-level: grade B,
* International Baccalaureate Standard Level (SL): score of 5 in English,
* European Baccalaureate: score of 70% in English.
If this is not achieved at the time of application it will form part of any conditional offer, and must be met by August 2010.
