PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed defensive end Travis Kirschke to a two-year contract, it was announced today. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kirschke, an 11-year veteran who was scheduled to be a free agent this year, originally signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent on March 11, 2004. He had previously spent one year with the San Francisco 49ers (2003) and his first six seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.

Kirschke has played in 141 career games, including 64 with the Steelers, and has made 30 starts (five with Pittsburgh). He played in all 16 games in 2007 for the Steelers and made four starts in place of the injured Aaron Smith.

Va bene che "depth is needed" e "he knows the system" ma per quale motivo abbiamo rifirmato per  due anni un giocatore pressochè finito non ne ho idea... Aspettiamo di sapere a che cifre è stato firmato, spero che gli siano bastati due pacchetti di noccioline.

Non credo sarà una gran perdita, abbiamo un Woodley da lanciare in quella posizione, Haggans ha ormai 31 anni, ha fatto il suo tempo e nelle ultime due stagioni è sempre andato in calando. Confido molto in Wood, credo possa diventare un bel playmaker per una 3-4 come la nostra.

Not that they'd want him back. Haggans is still solid, but not the playmaker LaMarr Woodley can be. At 31, Haggans shouldn't be targeted as more than a stopgap by 3-4 teams. He likely won't be on the radar of any 4-3 clubs.

Bisogna vedere come è strutturato il contratto - se gli abbiamo dato più del minimo previsto per un giocatore con 11 anni di Nfl siamo dei coglioni - in particolare cosa gli dovremmo pagare in caso di taglio. Magari lo portano al camp, perchè è uno collaudato di cui il coaching staff sa vita, morte e miracoli, lì viene fuori qualcosa di meglio e lo segano.

Detto questo, anch'io avrei optato per la classica stretta di mano e amici come prima.

Inaspettata a dir poco:

The Steelers took a big step today toward trying to solidify their offensive line by placing the transition tag on unrestricted tackle Max Starks -- a move that means the team will have to pay Starks the average of the top 10 tackles in the National Football League.

Il che significa per lui 6.85 mil $...un bel gruzzolo per uno che aveva iniziato il 2007 perdendo il posto di RT titolare.
A questo punto mi sa che Marvel Smith se la rischia, perchè fisicamente è logoro ed è all'ultimo anno di contratto...sarebbe interessante sapere se è in predicato di percepire un roster bonus all'inizio di marzo o giù di lì.
Tendenzialmente non sono affatto contrario a questa mossa, sempre che Max Starks sia quello che sul finire della passata stagione aveva fatto vedere di essere tornato in condizioni discrete.
Cambiano un minimo anche le prospettive in vista del draft...non di molto comunque perchè di fatto sia Marvel che Starks al termine della prossima stagione sarebbero FA.
Io taglierei Smith e drafterei comunque un tackle (Sam Baker); e al camp battaglia tra Colon, Simmons e Kemoeatu per entrambi i ruoli di guardia.

Con la probabile conferma di Starks credo cambieranno un pò le strategie del Draft. Stavo cercando di farmi un'idea e se il Draft fosse domani io andrei con delle scelte del genere per i primi round:

1st Round - Kentwan Balmber (DE, North Carolina)
2nd Round - Brandon Albert (OG, Virginia)
3rd Round - Dre Moore (DE, Maryland)
4th Round - Cody Wallace (C, Texas A&M)

A questo non andrei con la OL al primo giro, dobbiamo assolutamente rinforzare la linea difensiva, dobbiamo tornare ad essere la squadra che mette pressione ad ogni down, pochi cazzi.

Interessante articolo in cui si parla dell'approcio che la società avrà al Draft, intervistato Kevin Colbert (director of football operations) dice che andremo molto probabilmente sul BPA (best player available) piuttosto che concentrare l'attenzione su un ruolo in particolare.
L'altra bella notizia che si legge a fondo articolo è questa:

There is one big-money deal the Steelers want to get down this offseason, but it doesn't involve a free agent. The team would like to finalize a long-term contract extension for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger even though he has two years remaining on his original deal. Colbert said that is likely to happen sooner rather than later.

"We are moving along. It is something that is progressing very well and we'd like to be able to finalize it," Colbert said. "But it is a big deal for him and a big deal for us. But all signs are positive that we are going to get it done."
