It sure looks as if Mike Nolan is on the way out as 49ers coach.

If Nolan were coming back, this would have been the time for York to stop in his tracks and tell reporters the news. This wasn't a time for him to quicken his pace and try to get away from reporters.

For the first time this season, I believe Nolan will not be retained as head coach. And it's not just because of York's body language. I picked up on some serious vibes before the game that suggested the Yorks plan to fire Nolan in the coming days.

There have been few indications in recent weeks about which way the Yorks were leaning. Several weeks ago, co-owner Denise York told the San Francisco Chronicle she expected Nolan to return as coach but with reduced personnel powers. Multiple sources later told The Press Democrat that the Yorks were inclined to bring back Nolan as coach.

However, the Yorks can't be happy with the way Nolan handled the whole Alex Smith situation. That issue, probably more than any other, has caused the Yorks to reconsider whether Nolan can be an effective leader.

Some team sources believe the Smith-Nolan relationship is irreparably damaged. There is also the thought that Nolan has lost the locker room, though that one is more difficult to see. Certainly, no player was going to come out publicly and divulge that information. They have seen what happens to players who get on Nolan's bad side.

I think something could happen tomorrow. I'm not sure when Nolan and York are scheduled to meet, but Nolan's regularly scheduled press conference to discuss the season is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Tomorrow should be very interesting.

Sembra che i giorni di Nolan siano finiti. Sinceramente spero che lo tengano, ma le considerazioni che faccio non tengono conto dello stato dello spogliatoio: se davvero e' lui ad aver perso la fiducia dei giocatori e non Alex Smith, allora e' inutile tenerlo per perdere un altro anno. E' un vero peccato perche' mi sembra che almeno dal punto di vista del personale, abbia portato dentro ottimi giocatori. Certo che se il merito principale e' di McCoso non dovremmo perdere molto da questo punto di vista anche lasciando andare Nolan.
La cosa triste e' che saremmo ancora ad una nuova rifondazione (con piu' talento che nel dopo Erickson, ma ci vuole poco!)
Spero comunque che Manusky rimanga e che non portino dentro Martz, perche' potrei sentirmi molto molto male!

Non lo so: credo che ci sia bisogno di qualcuno che sistemi l'attacco e Singletary non e' proprio una mente offensiva. Martz poi e' l'ultimo a cui darei un attacco da sistemare, ma e' la mia opinione, non certo condivisa dalla maggior parte degli analisti NFL.

Questo è anche il mio pensiero. Non vorrei che questa fosse una decisione presa solo seguendo l'umore della maggioranza dei tifosi che ora vuole il licenziamento di Nolan, io non seguirei mai quello che dicono i tifosi (a cominciare da quello che dico io :D). Se ha perso lo spogliatoi non lo posso certo sapere, che reazioni porterà neanche. Qualsiasi cosa succederà spero solo che poi funzioni, non vorrei ritrovarmi fra due o tre anni a fare quello che sembra i tifosi amino di più: scegliere un nuovo allenatore.

A naso, non penso che venga offerto il lavoro a Singletary perchè non è esperto e pare che York (o meglio la moglie, che dovrebbe essere quella che decide.....) voglia uno esperto, però conosce già lo spogliatoio ed è molto stimato. Cowher non penso che venga, il mio incubo è Shotty, Martz? al massimo solo come OC, ma per come siamo costruiti (e abituati) noi e meglio se non viene. Uno dal college? per carità no! Un altro ex-DC? basta che ci sia un OC buono (Fassel è libero?).

E' stato un lungo ultimo giorno dell'anno per i 49ers, conferenze stampa convocate e poi rimandate, infine cancellate, meeting tra Nolan e gli York infiniti, alla fine l'uscita:

Niners owner John York, along with son Jed in the passenger seat, just left the 49ers complex. York stopped to briefly speak with reporters. Then, Mike Nolan left the building.

York had this to say, "We met for some time today and we're going to meet in the morning."

When asked if anything was decided, York said, "Nope. We'll meet in the morning."

Then, he said, "Happy New Year."

He was asked when he would have a decision. His answer: "Depends when the meetings are over, OK?"

He added, before driving away: "There's no point in talking about this until we have it finished."

Nolan then rolled up and stopped to deliver the following message to reporters: "I only have one thing to say, guys, 'Happy New Year and I'll be back in the morning.' "

Nolan then gave the thumbs-up sign before driving away with his wife, Kathy, in the passenger seat.

Cosa significa ciò? Boh....di sicuro York non è contento della stagione, ma il fatto che Nolan non sia stato subito esonerato può far pensare che gli venga data un'altra possibilità? Di sicuro ci saranno cambiamenti nello staff dell'attacco.

La cosa piu' triste di tutta questa faccenda e' come gli York la stano gestendo: sembra che non abbiano idee di cosa fare. Hai fiducia in Nolan? Dillo subito e fine! Non lo vuoi piu'? Dagli un calcio nel didietro a Cleveland subito dopo la fien della partita!
Possibile che non possano prendere queste decisioni prima della fine della stagione?
E' ovvio poi che l'anno prossimo, appena perdi una partita, tutti a dire" "Licenziate Nolan!". Risultato: pressione eccessiva dei media e dei tifosi sul coach e magari licenziamento a meta' stagione, il che porterebbe ad un altro anno perso!!!

L'attesa della decisione e' la cosa peggiore che potevano fare dal punto di vista di gestione della cosa secondo me.

A questo punto immagino che sara' cosi', anche se non c'e' niente di ufficile. L'impressione che si da' e' comunque pessima: mostri indecisione e non piena fiducia nel coach (rimandare di due giorni la conferenza stampa di fine anno gia' fissata ha fatto sembrare che avessero gia' deciso di licenziarlo e che poi lui li abbia in qualche modo convinti). La sedia di Nolan sara' comunque mooolto bollente e non la vedo una buona cosa per l'ambiente e la squadra. Appena qualcosa non andra' Nolan sara' crocifisso.

Se vuoi vedere la cosa dal lato positivo (:D ): quando si devono prendere decisioni importanti è sempre preferibile prendersi tutto il tempo necessario analizzando a fondo la situazione piuttosto che agire di getto.

Interessante articolo in cui entrano anche nei dettagli del colloquio tra Nolan e gli York. NOn so da chi abbiano saputo i dettagli, ma sembra un resoconto credibile e plausibile.

The 49ers have scheduled a 1 p.m. press conference today, during which Mike Nolan will talk about the recently completed season . . . and then the questions will begin and the subject will turn to 2008.

At this point in the morning, we know that Nolan will be back as head coach of the 49ers next season.

We also have confirmed that Jim Hostler is out as offensive coordinator, as expected. Hostler was unavailable for comment this morning. Clearly, Nolan saved his job for another season because the Yorks believed that a lot of what happened this season was out of his control.

Hostler was promoted from QBs coach after Norv Turner left to become Chargers head coach. The transition was not a smooth one. The 49ers, who ranked 26th in the league last season, finished last in most important offensive categories this season. The club started four different quarterbacks.

As for other coaching changes, a team spokesman said this morning that Nolan had not finished all of those meetings, yet.

It is unclear whether there will be an announcement that VP of player personnel Scot McCloughan has been elevated to GM and Nolan will be stripped of his "final say" powers. The Yorks were expected to offer that position to McCloughan, but the timing of such a move is unclear.

Se le parole qui sotto di McCoso sono vere, la scelta di tenere Nolan potrebbe essere giusta. L'unica cosa da sistemare a questo punto (lato giocatori) e' la sua relazione con Alex Smith

“The one thing I respected about the season, the players never quit playing and that’s something to be said for Coach Nolan,” said McCloughan. “Nowadays with these younger kids, they are very hard to keep on track, very hard. Mike does a phenomenal job of getting them to believe and following Mike. One of the reasons I feel so positive about the situation is because he is that guy and players want to play for him and they want to win for him.”

L'OC lo scegliera' Nolan (pericolo Martz scongiurato?). Buona l'idea di abbandonare il criterio della continuita' nel sistema per la scelta del successore di Hostler.

Nolan will retain the decision making power when it comes to his coaching staff, and insists he’s still the one voice of the organization.
