Question man says there are only three questions... and I'll bet Leo Tolstoy would agree.
The Trail Blazers finally have a general manager, and they practically hired Kaleb Canales as the head coach during Neil Olshey's 34-minute introductory news conference on Tuesday. Question man (at left) has taken over this blog... and it seems there are only three questions, no fewer, no more, for the Blazers.

Here they are:

1) Is Kaleb Canales ready?

Olshey and Paul Allen went to great lengths on Tuesday to endorse the good work of the interim coach. He's young (33 years old), and lacks big-time experience (23 games as an interim head coach), but he's liked by the players and viewed by some as a guy who only needs a chance to prove himself a worthy full-time coach.

Big difference, I think, between coaching JJ Hickson and Luke Babbitt over the final 23 games of a meaningless season and locking horns with George Karl, Gregg Popovich and the rest of the Western Conference when it counts. Canales was a nice respite from Nate McMillan (aka "Sarge") for the players, but I'm not convinced he'd connect as effectively as the guy who comes out of training camp as the coach. Theory one says that Canales was anointed the head coach by Olshey and Allen on Tuesday. Theory two says the team was simply giving him a pat on the back and trying to soften the PR hit in the event they can't eventually find a better option. First, a big question: Is he ready?

2) Is Neil Olshey for real... or just acting?

The former soap actor new Blazers GM did a brilliant job in 34 minutes on Tuesday of acting branding himself as a front-office executive with vision, and a direct line of communication to his owner, and also, as someone who isn't going to take shortcuts or think of this as a rebuilding project. I liked a lot of what Olshey said. Almost all of it, in fact. But upon my second listen to the news conference something struck me --- the guy studied Strasberg and Chekhov before he went into basketball. I hope he knows what he's doing delivers on his promises in the draft, free agency and in making all the smart little moves that this franchise needs to get right in order to survive the high-wire act that is rebuilding reloading. So do you think he's for real... or acting?

3) Use the lottery picks or trade the lottery picks?

If you believe that the Blazers aren't a team that is rebuilding, if you maintain that this is a franchise that is just reloading... does that mean that you don't want to use the No. 6 and 11 picks of the first-round on young players who may not be able to contribute immediately? Or do you use them? There's some speculation around the league that owner Paul Allen may be in a hurry to get back into the playoffs, and the whisper is that ex-GM Rich Cho made the mistake of telling Allen that he needed to blow up the roster, hoard draft picks and start over in early 2011 (Cho was blown up soon after). So what should the Blazers do with those two picks? I'm looking at San Antonio and Oklahoma City and seeing all the smart draft picks those two franchises used to get to the Western Conference Finals and I can't help but hope the Blazers hold the picks and draft two great young players. But what do you think they should do?

comunque secondo me Olshey tenterà di prendere Bledsoe

Sean (PDX)

With Olshey now at the helm in Rip City and preaching the importance of young talent, do the Blazers target a potential "cornerstone" this draft? Do they package the 6 and 11 to move up and get it? Is Drummond that guy? Or do they upgrade the 2 with Beal?

Chad Ford

Olshey spent a lot of time on the high school circuit and really values young players who were highly ranked coming out of high school. Look at their picks, DeAndre Jordan, Al-Farouq Aminu, Eric Bledsoe, etc. He also loved OJ Mayo and worked hard to get him. So ... if they can't move up (I could see Beal) as a target, he won't be afraid at all to go after a guy like Andre Drummond or Perry Jones.

Marshall Beal Batum Aldridge Okafor

buttali via..
