In the days leading up to the NFL trade deadline on Oct. 16, the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers thought they had struck a great deal.

Chicago was willing to send linebacker Lance Briggs to the 49ers for an unspecified draft pick. The 49ers were going to get a player they coveted, and Briggs, who the Bears expect to lose in free agency this offseason, was finally going to get a long-term contract.

Briggs was willing to give San Francisco something of a discount on the deal for two reasons: First, he wanted the security of a long-term pact. Second, he grew up in Sacramento, Calif., located roughly two hours from San Francisco.

The deal worked for all parties. But before it could be finalized, the new contract had to be approved by the NFL. That's where it hit a snag, according to two NFL sources. That snag may prove to be a catalyst for change this offseason in some of the rules regarding trades.

San Francisco couldn't give Briggs a new contract because he was a franchise player during the 2007 offseason. Under league rules, a franchise player can't sign a long-term contract after July 15 of a league year – neither with the team that franchised him nor another team. Briggs reported to Bears camp this season after that deadline and without a new deal.

"You can't change the rules during the season," a league source said. "It's pretty clearly stated, even if it was for a deal that made sense to everyone."

Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, steadfastly declined to comment on the potential trade. Similarly, Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo and San Francisco vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan declined to comment.

The bottom line is that a deal that seemed to make perfect sense fell apart. To many NFL executives who are hoping to increase the viability of trades, it's an example of how they would like the rules to be altered. That starts with, but is not limited to, moving the trade deadline to later in the season.

Pero l'anno scorso anche la trade con i Bills per Clements saltò all'ultimo ma poi il giocatore arrivò a fine stagione come FA, chissà che la storia non si ripeta anche se secondo me gli obiettivi principali della prossima off season devono essere le due linee. In proposito in giocatore che mi auguro arrivi è Alan Faneca degli Steelers magari con Snyder RT, Staley LT e Jenning a fare il malato immaginario da qualche altra parte.

BRIGGS QUALIFIES FOR THE OPEN MARKET

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that, with Thursday night's loss to the Redskins, Bears linebacker Lance Briggs has qualified for fully unrestricted free agency.

Under the terms of Briggs' one-year deal with the Bears, the team agreed not to use the franchise tag on him for a second straight season if he were to participate in at least 75 percent of the defensive snaps.

Briggs has started and played in 12 of the team's 13 games.  Technically, it's possible that the defensive snaps from those twelve games won't equal 75 percent of the total defensive snaps for the season.  But unless Briggs doesn't play at all in the last three weeks, it's highly unlikely that he'll be subject to the franchise tag for another season.

His market value is unclear.  Many league insiders recognize that the stats of a weakside linebacker in a Tampa Two defense are skewed (or, as Brian Baldinger would say, "skewered") by the fact that the weakside linebacker usually runs free in space while the defensive linemen tie up blockers.  Earlier this year, weakside linebacker Cato June received only $12 million over three years from the Bucs -- it's a decent payday, but not the kind of number that will prompt jaws to drop.

Then there's the whole "Dude, Where's My Car?" episode, which happened when Briggs wrecked his Lamborghini and ran away from the scene.  Some teams will definitely be reluctant to give him a big-money signing bonus given the possibility that he might do something stoopid like that after he gets paid.

Faneca vuole molti soldi, i niners non vogliono spendere molto per il ruolo di guardia, difatti lasceranno andare Smiley che vuole il contrattone, perciò non penso vadano su di lui.

Vi segnalo un bell'articolo sul Willis giocatore e anche sul Willis uomo (incredibile come sia riuscito a superare tutte le difficoltà che la vita gli ha messo davanti).

Ho visto solo il secondo tempo (tra l'altro nei soli secondi tempi siamo 7-4-2....sarà un caso?  ) quando ormai i buoi erano già scappati ma le considerazioni rimangono quelle di tutte le altre partite. L'attacco non riesce proprio a girare, non può essere solo per colpa delle chiamate, se fai 5 false start (2 di VD, arrivato a 7 in stagione, 1 a testa di Baas, Snyder e Harris, entrato per i diversi infortuni) la colpa è di chi è? dei buu del pubblico? Se poi ci aggiungi 2 intercetti e 5 fumble (3 almeno non persi)...
Tolta la corsa di 80 yards di Taylor (errore di placcaggio di Smith ad inizio azione) la difesa ha concesso 37 yards su corsa a quello che viene considerato il miglior attacco su terra della lega, il problema è sempre quello di non riuscire a creare pressione con la linea....se dai 5-7 secondi qualsiasi QB ti può vivisezionare, quello è il nostro principale problema difensivo che andrà per forza risolto in off season.

Niners removed from prime-time TV

It's no big surprise, but the 49ers have been spared another showing on national prime-time TV, thanks to the NFL's flex scheduling format.

The 49ers' game Sunday, Dec. 23, against the Buccaneers, which was original scheduled for a 5:15 p.m. start on NBC, has been changed. Now, they'll play the Bucs on Fox at 1:05 p.m. that day.

In the 49ers' place, NBC will now show the Redskins-Vikings game to a national TV audience. (See attachment below.)

"This person tried to jump up on one of the walls to sit, and he misjudged and he fell," said San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said, according to the Chronicle.
