The Washington Redskins signed quarterback Andre Woodson to their practice squad after he was cut by the New York Giants.  Woodson is big and strong, and can be mobile.  During his college career at Kentucky, he had two long stretches where he didn’t throw an interception.  He reportedly has good foot work and is able to drop back quickly.  That’s a real plus in Jim Zorn’s eyes, as he preaches quick drop-backs.  He’s considered to be a pocket passer, and was compared by one scouting service to Jason Campbell.  The main concern about him leading up to last year’s NFL Combine was his ability to keep his weight under control, thereby sustaining his mobility.

So, why did the Giants cut Woodson?    David Carr is the only other QB on their active roster.  He’s a 7-year veteran out of Fresno State who showed marked improvement as the preseason progressed this year.  The Giants’ other back-up QB is Rhett Bomar, a 2009 5th-round draft pick out of Sam Houston State.  New York signed him to their practice squad.  He started for Oklahoma in 2005, but was dismissed from the team for allegedly accepting payments from a local car dealer for work he did not actually perform.  Bomar is Sam Houston State’s all-time passing leader, and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award which is given to the top football player in a sub-Division I conference.

Woodson had a rough pre-season.  He completed 13 of 35 passes, was sacked 3 times, and threw an interception.  Coming to Washington makes sense for him, as he’ll have the opportunity to learn under Jim Zorn.  But, does signing him make sense for the Redskins?  As long as they don’t need him to contribute in a game this year, probably.  He’s on the practice squad, which means his job will be to run the scout team.  While he does, the Redskins will have the opportunity to see if he will present a serious challenge to Colt Brennan next year, as Chase Daniel did this year.  As for this year, Antwaan Randle El is more likely to take the reigns if something happens to Todd Collins and Jason Campbell.

La decisione di non tenere nè Robert Thomas nè il quinto giro Cody Glenn (ma scegliere uno più utile no eh?), significa che Orakpo sarà sicuramente titolare nel ruolo di strong side linebacker, con Fletcher in mezzo e McIntosh dall'altra parte. Per i packages contro i passaggi, Orakpo passerà a defensive end con esclusivi compiti di pass rush.

Sara' Malcolm Kelly il secondo ricevitore titolare, detto da Zorn. Ci sara' cmq molta rotazione tra Randle El, Kelly e Thomas, ma di base il ricevitore dal lato opposto a Moss sara' Kelly.

Ottima notizia, direi, vuol dire che non ha risentito di problemi fisici. E poi c'è anche Marko Mitchell, che è stato grande nel conquistarsi il quinto posto a roster. Forse le chiamate al draft di un anno fa, cominciano a prendere senso, escludendo Fred Davis, che mi sembra ancora indietro come comprensione del gioco e non ha fatto vedere le mani che aveva al college.

Non è un grosso problema, perchè se la stagione promette quello che io credo prometta, le valigie sono pronte per entrambi. Tutti parlano di un'ottima relazione tra i due, ma entrambi hanno tantissima pressione addosso, tuttavia darei ragione a Zorn, visto che nei due turnovers la responsabilità di Jason è stata evidente. Un quarterback di quel livello non può lanciare un'anatra ferita e farsi intercettare in quel modo, mentre nel fumble poi riportato in meta da Umenyora (felicissimo per lui, che è un grande giocatore, che ha patito molto restando fuori un anno, che bello vederlo fare un big play del genere) ha avuto la colpa di restare immobile nella tasca, gli manca l'accortezza di fare quel passettino in avanti in più.

Comunque siamo alle solite, pensavo di vedere una partita del 2008...attacco nullo e difesa che limita i danni. I Giants sono stati molto fisici, ed hanno dimostrato che il loro gioco aereo non è limitato dalle perdite, anzi.

Impressione personale: le altre tre squadre della Nfc East sono decisamente più avanti di noi, almeno offensivamente, non credo che faremo molta strada. Prevedo il benservito sia per Campbell sia per Zorn, c'è installata una west coast offense da far funzionare, e secondo me si andrà dritti su Mike Shanahan, o in alternativa su Mike Holmgren. Segnatevelo tutti, a fine anno ne riparliamo.

Ah, dimenticavo...sapete che non è la prima volta che lo dico, DeAngelo Hall è clamorosamente sopravvalutato. Clamorosamente.

Chi non ci crede, guardi la partita di ieri e mi dica se si possono mancare così tanti placcaggi ed assegnamenti difensivi. L'intercetto è stato merito dell'immenso Laron, uno che è sempre dappertutto, a riparare i danni degli altri, un pò come l'amico Fletcher, 18 placcaggi.
