NEW YORK -- The Yankees' starting rotation has been dealt a serious blow, as Chien-Ming Wang -- the Major Leagues' winningest pitcher over the last two-plus seasons -- could be lost for the remainder of the 2008 campaign.

The right-hander was examined on Monday in New York and has been diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament of the right foot and a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon of the right foot.

Wang will be on crutches and wear a protective boot for at least six weeks, the Yankees said.

According to that timetable, Wang would not be out of the boot until almost early August, and would require additional time to return his arm to Major League pitching condition.

The evaluations were made on Monday at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Columbia Medical Center, with Wang being examined by Yankees team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon and Dr. Jason Greisberg, a foot and ankle specialist.

Wang's injury is the second Lisfranc-related diagnosis for the Yankees this season, a rarity considering injuries of that type do not normally affect baseball players.

Right-handed reliever Brian Bruney slipped and fell during an April 23 game in Chicago and injured the Lisfranc ligament on his right foot. Like Wang, Bruney was able to avoid surgery and is eyeing a possible return to Major League duty in late July.

E' arrivata la diagnosi e non è delle più incoraggianti. Comunque non diamo già la stagione per persa, veniamo da un buon periodo dopotutto. Adesso bisogna aggrapparsi a Mussina (sperando che tenga), Pettitte e Joba. Ironia della sorte, alla luce di questo infortunio avere Joba in rotazione fa decisamente comodo. Per completare la rotazione (in attesa di possibili acquisizioni) assieme a Rasner secondo me verrà data una possibilità a Giese, con alternative Karstens e Igawa. Poi tra due settimane dovrebbe ritornare anche Kennedy. Il miglior sostituto di Wang deve essere comunque l'attacco.

Due mesi senza Wang sono tanti, ma il distacco da Boston e Tampa è piuttosto limitato, quindi, se d'estate cambierete marcia come fate ogni anno, avete comunque almeno una chance... Quando finalmente tornerà, poi, sarà bello fresco e, dato che l'infortunio non riguarda braccio-mano-schiena-spalla, teoricamente al livello di prima. La squadra dovrà tener duro, soprattutto Moose dovrà continuare come sta facendo. Certo che sembra proprio l'anno di Tampa, girano a 1000 e le due principali rivali restano senza ACE e miglior hitter per tutta l'estate o più...  :roll:

Passato il day off più triste della stagione si torna a giocare, allo Stadium dove arrivano i Padres.
7:05pm ET - Wolf (5-4, 3.83) vs Pettitte (6-5, 4.64).
Prima partenza nella carriera di Wolf allo Stadium, ultimamente sta lanciando bene (1 ER in tutte e tre le ultime partenze, 7 IP con 9 K nell'ultima uscita contro i Dodgers). Un interessante dato: Rivera + Hoffman = 1,000 carrer SV. Not bad.

Intanto ecco le ultime sui vari rumors che circolando in questi giorni:

The Yankees are scheduled to have eight days off before July 25. The schedule requires the use of a fifth starter on only four occasions before the July 31 trade deadline.

By then, Cashman might be able to manipulate the market much the way he did in 2006 and get a starter more cheaply than what it would cost him now. Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia and Oakland right-hander Rich Harden are among the pitchers who could become available.

Verissimo. Molto ma molto sfortunato. D'altronde lui è uno che dipende dalla BABIP, perchè la stragrande maggioranza dei suoi AB termina con una palla in gioco (pochi K, pochissime BB, pochi HR). Necessariamente avrà mesi da .200 e mesi da .400 di BA. Per ora è stato sfortunato. Si scalderà furiosamente non appena smetterà di essere sfortunato e sembrerà clutch e tutta quella roba lì.

Di quelli io non mi avvicinerei a nessuno tranne Hughes e Kennedy (ma quest'ultimo solo come "condimento" per un pezzo molto più gustoso), ma quei 2 dopo non essere partiti per Santana non partiranno certo per Sabathia. Non credo che verrà fatto un trade. Bisognerebbe rinnegare quanto fatto in off-season e non mi sembra il caso. Tanto vale aspettare l'off-season, anche perchè secondo me avete ugualmente le pedine per provare ad arrivare ai playoffs.

Vinta la prima con i Padres, 8-0 con un'altra grande prestazione del nostro attacco (guidato da Giambi che batte 2 HR). Bene anche Pettitte che lancia 7 IP concedendo solo 5 H con la bellezza di 9 K; ok anche il bullpen con Veras, Traber e Rivera (3 K).

Abbiamo vinto 5 partite in fila (massimo stagionale), 8 delle ultime 10, 10 delle ultime 13 e 18 delle ultime 26. Gli starters nelle ultime cinque partenze hanno una ERA pari a 1.41 ed era dal 2004 che in una partita allo Stadium non avevamo almeno 14 strikeouts come ieri sera.

Giambi: 28 valide delle ultime 51 sono state per extra bases, 17 HR stagionali (tre in più del totale del 2007), 6 degli ultimi 11 HR sono arrivati contro LHPs.
A-Rod: 186 HR con la maglia degli Yankees, ha superato Paul O'Neill (che al momento è in vacanza nel bel paese) per il 16esimo posto all-time. Sta battendo come un dannato, 28/66 (.424) con 6 HR e 21 RBI.

Arrivano anche altre notizie su Wang:

Healing is the formation of scar tissue and not regrowth of the normal ligament or tendon tissue; consequently, future problems such as arthritis can occur at Lisfranc’s joints or reinjury of the peroneal longus tendon.”

Molto probabilmente quindi la prossima volta che vedremo lancia CMW sarà a Tampa, durante il prossimo spring training.

Intanto si parla insistentemente di Alfredo Aceves:

His stats for 6 starts at Trenton: 44 innings, 30 hits, 8 earned runs, 5 walks, 33 strikeouts
His stats for 14 starts this season: 91 innings, 62 hits, 19 earned runs, 13 walks, 70 strikeouts.

Aceves is 25 and a veteran of the Mexican League. He’s been around a little and all evidence is that he knows what he’s doing. It seems about time to get him to Scranton given his dominance of the Eastern League.

Here is all I know about the guy: Brian Cashman and his people can’t stop talking about him. I’d love to find time to go down to Trenton and see him myself but haven’t had the opportunity.

It’s not going to be any time soon because they want to see him pitch in Scranton, but Aceves could in the big league rotation after the break. Props to Jorge from Mexico, who started e-mailing me about this guy two months ago.
