Sempre a proposito di Alex Smith; riflettendo un po' a mente fredda io credo che 'infortunio alla spalla lo condizioni più di quanto si pensi e lo ha sottolineato anche Julian Peterson dopo la partita di domenica dicendo di vederlo soffrire dopo ogni lancio. Nolan ha glissato sulla questione ma molti dei suoi lanci sono troppo fuori misura per un giocatore fisicamente a posto.
A questo punto, visto che la stagione è andata, forse è il caso di toglierlo e magari di farlo operare, esporlo ad ulteriori brutte figure mi sembra deleterio e rischiamo di bruciarlo definitivamente.

Finally, Smith admits shoulder and forearm have been killing him

Quarterback Alex Smith finally said what everybody who has watched the 49ers the past three games already knew: His shoulder is greatly affecting his play. And not only that, but his forearm is bothering him, too.

While 49ers head coach Mike Nolan has said the reason for Smith's problems with inaccuracy is not tied to his shoulder, it is quite apparent that Smith has not thown with anywhere near the precision that is expect from an NFL quarterback.

Smith admitted that his shoulder AND his right forearm have been bothering him. Smith first experienced forearm problems during the bye week after he began throwing a lot after having his right arm in a sling for several days.

Smith will not take part in the team portion of practice today because of a forearm strain. While Nolan said he expects Smith to play Sunday, Smith did not make any commitment.

After all, the problems with Smith's shoulder and forearm have created two other potentially long-term problems for Smith: 1) His mechanics appear messed up as he tries to conpensate for the injury; and 2) With his poor play since he returned to the lineup, Smith's confidence has taken a major hit, as well.

Smith underwent an MRI examination on Tuesday, he said. Dr. James Andrews has been consulted on the injury.

Backup quarterback Trent Dilfer is scheduled to take the practice reps with the first-team offense today, and would be expected to start Sunday against the Rams if Smith is held out of action.

For weeks, Smith has insisted that his shoulder is fine, he said, because he thought it would get better. But it hasn't gotten better. The injuries have lingered, and Smith is taking a lot of heat around the country for being an absolute bust.

When people continue to insist that his shoulder is fine, the only reasonable deduction is that Smith must be a really bad quarterback with little hope for improvement. He finally came out and admitted his health issues.

Smith completed just 12 of 28 passes for 114 yards in a 24-0 loss to the Seahawks on Monday. His throwing arm has been wildly inaccurate in the three games since he returned from the shoulder separation he sustained Sept. 30 against the Seahawks.

"Monday night did not feel good, as far as throwing the ball," Smith said.

--Nolan was asked this morning about ESPN analyst and former NFL QB Ron Jaworski's observation that Smith locks his left knee, making a lot of his passes sail high.

"There are technical things we've seen ever since we drafted him, but so is the case with every quarterback and we continue to work though those things," Nolan said. "Is that the reason when he (Smith) is running to his right or left that some of those balls weren't thrown effecitively? No. He's talking about pocket passes. Some of his effectiveness the other night you can't put on Jaworski's expertise of locking the knee outside the pocket."

Nolan was asked if he agreed that sometimes Smith does lock his knee?

"Oh, yeah, he does, at times. (But) you can lock your knee and throw a good ball. I want to make that clear."

--It should be noted that Smith said it was his decision to continue to try to play with this injury. But it's also clear that he now is questioning whether he made the right decision to try to suck it up and play through the injury.

--Also, nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin will be out for four weeks with a right calf injury, Nolan said.

- i WR non si liberano e quando sono un minimo sotto pressione non tengono una palla in mano (vedi Battle sul quarto e 3 e anche dopo)
- la linea non riesce a tenere gli avversari
- Davis e' stato pessimo nella protezione: tutta sua la colpa sul primo fumble
- l'unico che si salva secondo me ' Gore

Difesa
- Un uomo su tutti: Ulbrich 
- Linea difensiva ridicola: Hasselbeck ha letto tutto il New York Post in attesa che i suoi ricevitori passassero prendere un caffe' al bar dello stadio e poi si liberassero in mezzo al campo
- Limitiamo gli avversari e ci diamo la zappa sui piedi con le penalita'
- Secondarie sulle ginocchia: brutta prestazione anche di "80M" Clements
- Nemmeno nelle azioni in cui blitzavano in due o tre riuscivamo a mettere pressione
- La nota positiva e' che nonostante siano stati in campo 20 minuti nel primo tempo e l'attacco non avesse preso neanche un primo down ervamo sotto solo 17-0

- Lee ha una gran gamba
- Hicks ci da' buone posizioni di partenza sui kickoff
- Abbiamo messo in difficolta' il kicking team avversario sui FG

Coaching
- Ridicoli i due tentativi di mettere in offside la difesa avversaria su quei quarti down (uno fintando di andare alla mano, l'altro facendo una finta finta di punt)
- Perche' chiamare un T.O. su un quarto e uno quando sai che devi dare la palla a Gore? Nolan in queste situazioni ci pensa sempre troppo e permette alla difesa di organizzarsi. Se poi chiami il TO almeno fai un gioco che gli altri non si aspettano!
- Imbarazzante il trick play sul terzo e 5 sulle nostre 6-7
- Visto che Smith non ha il tempo di lanciare, perche' non chiamare qualche gioco piu' veloce o dare piu' spesso la palla al RB?
- Perche' abbaimo giocato quel quarto e tre invece di prenderci il FG?!?!?!?!?!? Alla fine non sarebbe cambiato niente, ma in quel modo e' sembrato proprio il gesto della disperazione di chi non sa cosa fare!
- Nolan non ci sta capendo veramente niente e continua a fare errori nella gestione della gara: se potevamo perdonarglieli il primo anno, al terzo ci sta un po' rompendo la palle!

Think about it, though: Smith was the No. 1 pick in 2005 mostly because he excelled in the fresh and innovative offensive scheme Urban Meyer created at the University of Utah. Meyer's version of the shotgun spread offense best utilized Smith's talents. It put a large number of receivers downfield, maximizing Smith's options and forcing him to make quick decisions. If nothing opened up quickly, Smith was fast enough and shifty enough to take off and gain yards in the middle of the mostly linebacker-free defense.

We have to assume that's what the 49ers saw when they scouted and evaluated Smith. Sure, there were combines that measured his athletic ability and psychiatric evaluations to assess his mental acuity, but the bulk of the available evidence came on the field in a University of Utah uniform.

So what do the 49ers do? They put Smith in a traditional offense, have him take seven-step drops behind an offensive line that is well below average in terms of pass blocking, and they wonder why they have the worst offense in a league full of bad offenses.

Does that make any sense?

Sulle dichiarazioni di Nolan direi che c'è poco da dire, anche leggendovi si notava che smith aveva problemi e se l'avete notato voi che lo vedete una volta a settimana come fa a non notarlo il suo allenatore?

altro errore la linea offensiva, si sapeva dove si doveva lavorare in questa estate e mi sembra se possibile (ma sappaimo che è impossibile) che ci sia stato un regresso dall'anno scorso.

solo che un senso di depressione così non me lo ricordavo dal periodo del monday night perso con Green Bay nel 1999, Steve Young carriera finita, Jeff Garcia in panchina e attacco in mano a Rick Mirer, se non ricordo male. Steve Mariucci impotente sotto la pioggia in quello che è stato uno dei periodi peggiori della squadra. E ora le aspettative sono quelle di vedere Dilfer in campo fino a fine stagione?

Intanto domenica tocca Dilfer, ma ho idea che toccherà a lui fino al termine della stagione perché non ha alcun senso esporre Smith ad altre brutte figure senza dimenticare il rischio di altri infortuni vista la linea che abbiamo.
Magari sarò un illuso ma penso ancora che Smith possa essere il QB del nostro futuro mentre ho sempre più dubbi sull'operato di Nolan anche alla luce delle azzeccate considerazioni di Multiple.
