se il ragazzo merita, nel 2009 potremmo avere lui e Woodley outside e Silverback e LT nel mezzo
io speravo in qualche run stopper della madonna che impegnasse più OL possibile in situazioni di passaggio (uno tipo Merling)...evidentemente l'anno prossimo sarà nuovamente l'anno di Diesel  :gazza:

Mendenhall, Sweed e Davis, sulla carta, sono ottimi playmaker nei loro ruoli...tra i migliori.
dal punto di vista del BPA stiamo facendo il draft migliore di tutta la NFL.
quindi sono contentissimo.
solo ho troppa paura che la nostra DL nn possa garantire (causa infortuni) un ottimo rendimento all'intero reparto...tutto qui

il ragazzo potrebbe prendere in futuro il posto di Batch che nn è eterno e, addirittura, qualcuno paventa la possibilità di un utilizzo da WR nei trick plays...sperem

e al quarto giro abbiam preso Tony Hills...OT dei Longhorns che godeva di grandissima reputazione prima di rompersi la gamba contro Texas Tech.
insomma...anche qui un grande talento scivolato nei mid rounds per colpa di un infortunio.

Interessante la scelta di Dennis Dixon, una scommessa. Nell'NFL non sarà mai un QB, almeno credo, ma ha delle doti fisiche, atletiche devastanti. Gli Steelers non è la prima volta che draftano giocatori del genere (vedi Randle El e lo stesso Kordell), potrebbe rivelarsi una mossa azzeccata come un pick buttato nel cesso. Non che ci fosse comunque qualcosa di devastante da prendere al posto suo a quel punto del Draft...

Vediamo adesso cosa facciamo con i due picks al sesto giro.

Mike Humpal (OLB, Iowa)

Pretty good size and bulk...Very active and has a non-stop motor...Always around the action...Reliable tackler...Stout at the point...Can take on and shed blocks...Is smart and instinctive...Tough and strong...Hard worker...Team leader...Productive.

Backed up Chad Greenway early in his career..Could also project inside at the pro level...Doesn't have all the physical tools you look for but compensates with great intangibles...Probably isn't starting material but could develop into a solid backup.

Ryan Mundy (S, West Virginia)

Pick Analysis: Mundy is a safety who can run well. He's not real big, but was a productive three-year starter at West Virginia.

In 2007, Mundy took advantage of a short-lived NCAA rule allowing graduating players to use their last year of eligibility while in a graduate program at another college. After starting 18 games for Michigan over three years (plus a redshirt year for a shoulder injury), he decided to go to a school closer to his hometown. Mundy managed 62 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass breakups as a starting free safety during his one year in Morgantown.

Personalmente sono molto contento di come sono andate le cose, inizialmente avrei preferito una soluzione diversa al primo giro (vedi un Balmer o un Albert) ma mai e poi mai avrei pensato di poter trovare Mendenhall (che fino a ieri era un top 15 pick, non dimentichiamolo), un gran bel RB che si completa alla perfezione con Fast Willie che finalmente avrà un pò di "breathing room" e non dovrà portare la palla 350 volte come succedeva fino all'anno scorso. Lo stesso discorso va fatto per Sweed, secondo molti era uno dei tre migliori WR di questa classe, trovarlo alla 53esima scelta è stata una sorpresa credo un pò per tutti. Potrebbe diventare quel big target tanto desiderato da Ben, non ha grande velocità, ma sono sicuro diventerà un ottimo ricevitore.

Buone anche le scelte di Davis e Hills, il primo non lo conosco ma leggo molto bene a riguardo, dovrebbe adattarsi benissimo alla nostra 3-4. Il secondo invece viene da un infortunio che gli ha fatto perdere un sacco di posizioni. Dovrebbe comunque essere un bel giocatore che può giocare sia a destra che a sinistra, al college iniziò dietro a Jonathan Scott (ora ai Lions) e lo staff di Texas dice che Hills è un miglior prospetto di quello che era inizialmente Scott. Non credo comunque che potrà competere per uno spot da starter nel suo primo anno nella Lega.

La scelta di Dixon invece come dicevo prima è una bella scommessa (anche se si è frantumato il ginocchio), non credo sarà mai un QB a livello NFL ma è uno slasher, ha delle doti atletiche e fisiche eccellenti. In lui mi sembra di rivedere un Randle El e, volendo, un Kordell Stewart (anche se, ripeto, non lo vedo come QB). Potrebbe rivelarsi una bella presa come un pick buttato, vedremo.

Di Humphal e Mundy invece non so proprio niente, non saprei cosa aspettarmi.

Draft grade: B+

“We were of the mind-set that we were thinking (about trading down), with only six picks … then we would entertain it for sure,” said Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert. “We came up with a list of guys, and said, ‘If these guys are there, we’re not trading down because they’re that good and we want them.’”

Mendenhall was one of those players, and Colbert said the Steelers already had turned their card in when the telecast of the draft was indicating they still had over seven of their allotted 10 minutes left.

“First and foremost, he’s a quality human being,” said Coach Mike Tomlin about Mendenhall. “We were thoroughly impressed with him while getting to know him through the interview process. A very humble, blue-collar worker. Those type of individuals don’t have any problem fitting in. In terms of what he brings to the table – he’s a complete back. He can run inside, he can run outside. He’s a powerful runner. He’s elusive, and of course he has the speed to go the distance. It shouldn’t be too difficult finding ways that he can contribute to this football team.”

If Mendenhall surprised the Steelers by being on the board when they picked in the first round, they were equally shocked that Sweed was there when their turn came in the second. The Steelers didn’t bring Mendenhall to town for a post-combine visit because they were sure he’d be picked before they had a shot at him, and Sweed was a guy they would’ve considered in the first round had circumstances been different.

And at a shade under 6-foot-5, Sweed also falls into the category of the tall receiver Roethlisberger requested.

“I love his range,” said receivers coach Randy Fichtner. “The (wingspan) is extremely large. He’s got the longer arms. When we were down there, his vertical jump was 36 or 37-inches. You couple that with the idea that he’s almost 6-5, you’re talking about a larger frame and target.”

Infine, su ESPN ecco cosa dicono del nostro Draft: “The Pittsburgh Steelers hit home run with each of their first 4 picks”.

Io non sarei così entusiasta, ok Mendenhall, sul quale ho comunque qualche dubbio, visto che ha fatto solo un grande anno, ma un OL dovevate prenderlo, la situazione della vostra linea offensiva è deficitaria e pur avendo ora tante armi offensive, rischiate di non riuscire a sfruttarle pienamente causa linea porosa.

sulla OL era già chiaro che nn avremmo speso un primo giro (a parte Albert) nel momento in cui sono stati riconfermati tutti gli OT che avevamo a roster.
penso che Mahan C l'anno scorso abbia fatto soffrire l'intera linea...è difficile pensare che Hartwig possa fare peggio.
insomma, il Front Office ha realizzato che nessun OL disponibile alla 23 potesse essere l'uomo giusto ed è andata di BPA.

io invece speravo si andasse di DL (di RB ne abbiam già tanti e si dice sia il talento più facile da scovare) ma Mendenhall è uomo da Smash Mouth e mi va bene lo stesso  :D

PS: per lo meno Merling è andato in AFC East insieme a Gholston...povero Tom  :hehe:

Però l'anomalia di Pittsburgh è che l'opinione - pessima - che hanno i fans e gli "altri in generale" sulla linea offensiva, evidentemente non è per nulla condivisa dal coaching staff...uno che pensa che i suoi ciccioni finiranno per far ammazzare l'uomo da cento miloni di dollari se ne frega di avere solo sei pick e sale a prendersi il miglior prospetto nel ruolo. Invece anche quest'anno hanno aspettato il quarto giro per prendere un ragazzo che non giocherà dal Day 1.

L'unica cosa palese è che Sean Mahan era osceno come centro...ed è stato, si spera, ben sostituito con Justin Hartwig.

Intanto si parla molto bene di questo Doug Legursky, C da Marshall, prima firma Black & Gold tra gli undrafted.
Come al solito attenzione ai rookie free agent...a volte riusciamo a far meglio qua che nei mid-rounds.

PS: chiaramente "far ammazzare l'uomo da cento milioni di dollari" è soltanto un modo di dire...Godsend è immortale   

Secondo me avete fatto un buonissimo draft...

Mendenhall è integro e in NFL può fare sfracelli....Sweed era a detta di molti il miglior WR del draft...e Mike Humpal, preso a quel punto, è un colpaccio....

l'unico pick che non ho capito molto è Dennis Dixon, non avevate già Omar Jacobs in grado di fare il Randle El della situazione??
