Inside Slant

The Steelers are very much aware that they also won their opener last season, and that the Cleveland Browns were not quite the New England Patriots.

Buffalo should be a sterner test, on offense at least, with a better quarterback in J.P. Losman and four good wide receivers.

Pittsburgh's 34-7 victory over the Browns came easily, and forgotten were the four dropped passes, the pressure quarterback Ben Roethlisberger came under in the second quarter and the iffy running game — not to mention the three straight passes of more than 20 yards completed against them in the third quarter.

They also are aware of the relative easy schedule the NFL has presented them the first month of the season. They do not have a playoff team from last season in their first four — Buffalo, San Francisco and then at Arizona.

It's important for them to get off to a fast start.

"We're definitely not a finished product in a lot of areas," coach Mike Tomlin judged.

He has to be concerned about a running game that, while it produced 206 yards, 48 of those came from two runs by wide receivers, Cedrick Wilson and Santonio Holmes. Also, while Willie Parker ran 27 times for 109 yards, he had trouble running inside. He had runs of 25 and 22 yards and one of seven but most of his runs were for two yards or less and that wasn't Baltimore's defense out there.

The Bills will come after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who had to throw the ball away a few times in Cleveland under a heavy rush and was hit several times, even though he officially was sacked just once.

"They play football the way we play football in many ways, which should make for an interesting matchup," Tomlin said. "They hustle and run to the football. They run and they play with emotion. Make no mistake about it; they are built around their rush and their ends."

The Steelers offensive line remains a concern, even after the first game. New starting center Sean Mahan, who weighs only 301 pounds, was moved off the ball on a number of occasions. New right tackle Willie Colon, who is built more like a guard and has short arms, had some trouble with pass protection.

The Steelers offense and defense have changed since Bill Cowher left. Even though Dick LeBeau remains as the defensive coordinator, it looked as if the new head coach took some restraints off him that may have been placed there in the past by Cowher.

LeBeau even used a four-man line with four true defensive linemen last Sunday in the dime defense, something rarely seen under Cowher, who preferred two linemen and two linebackers in his line when he moved to the passing defense.

On offense, the Steelers promised to move the ball around, use four wide receivers on first and second downs and become unpredictable. They were in the opener. Six different receivers shared the 12 receptions and seven different players had runs from scrimmage.

"We knew going in this offense was going to spread the ball around," Ward said.

SERIES HISTORY: 22nd meeting. Pittsburgh leads the series, 12-9, including 2-1 in the playoffs. The Steelers are 8-2 at home. This is Buffalo's first visit to Heinz Field and its first game in Pittsburgh in 11 years. The Steelers have won six of their past seven meetings, including a 29-24 victory in the final game of the 2004 season that gave Pittsburgh an AFC-record 15th victory and kept Buffalo out of the playoffs.

NOTES, QUOTES

—As part of the celebration of their 75th season, the Steelers will wear throwback uniforms on Sunday for the first of two games this season. The uniforms will resemble those they wore in the 1940s, '50s and '60s.

—Also as part of their 75th season, the Steelers chose a Legends Team, 24 players who played before the 1970's Super Bowl era. The team will be honored at Sunday's game.

OFFENSE — QB Bobby Layne, RB Dick Hoak, RB John Henry Johnson, TE Elbie Nickel, WR Roy Jefferson, WR Ray Mathews, C Chuck Cherundolo, G Mike Sandusky, G Bruce Van Dyke, T Charley Bradshaw, T Frank Varrichione.

DEFENSE — DL Big Daddy Lipscomb, DL Ben McGee, DL Bill McPeak, DL Ernie Stautner, LB Dale Dodril, LB Myron Pottios, LB Jerry Shipkey, DB Jack Butler, DB/RB Bill Dudley, DB Howard Hartley, DB Clendon Thomas.

SPECIALISTS — P Pat Brady, K Armand Niccolai.

—Two of the Steelers' top four wide receivers were shut out in the opener. Cedrick Wilson and Nate Washington did not catch a pass, although there were only 12 receptions, and none was thrown their way. Wilson complained bitterly in training camp about not getting the ball enough.

WR Hines Ward talked to both of them after the game.

"Everyone is going to get their fair share," Ward said. "I told those guys that their time is coming."

—The defensive players took up a collection and bought coordinator Dick LeBeau a Rolex watch for his 70th birthday, which landed last Sunday. "He's a special man," defensive end Aaron Smith said.

—Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger joked that if the Patriots cheated in their 2004 AFC Championship Game victory in Pittsburgh, something should be done about it.

"Deshea Townsend earlier said that he feels they cheated during our AFC championship game, so we should get a Super Bowl ring."

BY THE NUMBERS: 6 — Sacks in the opening game, or more than 15 percent of their total of 39 last season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "A lot of people didn't know football existed in this town before 1970." — Dick Hoak, former assistant coach and one of the two running backs named to the Legends Team, an all-star team of pre-1970s players chosen by the Steelers.

PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES

—LB James Harrison, credited with a sack against the Browns, had it cut in half by Steelers coaches after they reviewed film. He shares it now with backup NT Chris Hoke.

—CB William Gay, a rookie fifth-round draft choice, has moved ahead of veteran Ricardo Colclough as No. 4 on the team.

—FB Carey Davis figures to get more involved in the offense as the season goes on. The new starter, who replaced Dan Kreider, had three carries in the opener for five yards.

—NT Chris Hoke, the backup to Pro Bowler Casey Hampton, was used extensively in the opener. Some of his play came when the Steelers went to a four-man line.

—RB Najeh Davenport dropped two short passes in Cleveland on Sunday. He's the third-down back and caught one for 17 yards.

GAME PLAN: The Steelers hope to do the same thing against Buffalo they did in Cleveland: Mix things up on offense and blitz the heck out of J.P. Losman on defense. The Steelers believe they can run on the Bills, who ranked 28th against the run last season.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Bills four-receiver offense, led by Lee Evans, vs. Steelers blitzing defense. Do the Steelers cover or rush?

Bills MLB Paul Posluszny vs. Steelers run offense. The Bills ranked 28th in the NFL against the run last season and Posluszny is the only significant addition.

Bills DE Aaron Schobel vs. Steelers LT Marvel Smith. Schobel had 14 sacks last season.

INJURY IMPACT: Starting CB Deshea Townsend has a groin injury that coach Mike Tomlin said will not keep him out of Sunday's game.

Steelers' Parker displeased with own effort
By Scott Brown
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, September 14, 2007

Ask Willie Parker to assess his performance in the Steelers' season opener last Sunday and he makes it sound like he rushed for 29 yards, not the 109 he grinded out against the Browns.

"I was making some bad reads," Parker said. "There were some holes I didn't hit."

The Pro Bowler still notched his 13th career 100-yard rushing game, and his final total would have been closer to 150 yards, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said, had Parker not slipped and fallen on a play in the fourth quarter of the Steelers' 34-7 win.

But take away two lengthy runs and Parker had 62 yards on 25 carries, and he hinted that open running lanes aren't the only thing he missed in Cleveland.

The Steelers had a fullback in the game for only five plays in the first half, and Dan Kreider, Parker's lead blocker the previous two seasons, was only on the field for one of those.

"I need some company back there," Parker said.

Parker, however, should be used to running without a fullback escort. Arians said 60 percent of the Steelers' running plays last season came in one-back sets, while 40 percent were run when two backs were in the game.

That percentage was essentially flip-flopped last week, as Arians said the Steelers ran out of a two-back set around 65 percent of the time because they had a big lead and wanted to run out the clock in the second half.

"We're very little in running-play difference from what we've run in the past," Arians said.

The one noticeable change in the running game is the smaller but more athletic Carey Davis starting over Kreider at fullback.

Both dressed for the Cleveland game, and it appears as if the two will share the position -- Arians said he expects both to be active for Sunday's game against Buffalo -- with Kreider playing in short-yardage and goal-line situations as well as when the Steelers are trying to chew up time.

"If that's the role they want to have for me," Kreider said, "I'll embrace it and try to excel at it."

Some of the running backs that excelled last season in the NFL got off to slow starts in Week 1. LaDainian Tomlinson, Larry Johnson and Steven Jackson combined for just 126 rushing yards.

Along with being a Pro Bowler in 2006, Parker has something else in common with those three backs: He saw very little action during preseason games.

"A lot of people say that that I could be rusty," Parker said, "but I don't make excuses for myself."

Nor should he, said Arians, who noted that Parker still rushed for more than 100 yards against defense that is better than people think.

Not that Arians or the Steelers mind Parker feeling that he can and should play a lot better when the Steelers host the Bills on Sunday.

"He shouldn't be satisfied," Arians said. "As a group we left a lot of offense on that field and a lot of points on that field. I was not very happy with our performance last week."

Mentre all'esterno, se riesce a girare l'angolo è SEMPRE pericoloso.

26-3.
Ben 9 i ricevitori trovati, eccellente. Reed 4 FG.

PS Aspettiamo il regalino da Cleveland...
