http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/07/28/steelers.postcard/index.html

1. I think the Steelers do not miss Joey Porter the player, because his impact declined in a 64-tackle season last year. But they'll miss Joey Porter the presence.

2. I think the draft choice likely to make the biggest early impact is LaMarr Woodley, the second-round outside linebacker from Michigan. Impressive-looking kid. Steelers think he'll play the run and rush the passer with equal skill. "He's the perfect outside linebacker for our system,'' defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau told me.

3. I think the one thing I took away from my chat with Roethlisberger on Saturday evening is he absolutely, positively refuses to make excuses about being so inconsistent last year. Which I think is really a good thing.

4. I think Mike Tomlin is still on trial with some of his players -- many of whom think the 15 two-a-days are excessive. And I also think he doesn't care what the players think.

5. I think the offense may be in the hands of a new man, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, who takes over for Ken Whisenhunt. But life on offense here won't change much. "Don't kid yourself,'' Roethlisberger said. "We're still a smashmouth team.'

Articolo condivisibile.

Lawrence Timmons
Was there on Wednesday, the only day he practiced for a full day. On one series of plays on 11 on 11 drills he: a) got pancaked by Heath Miller;
b) Was engaged by Cody Boyd and flattened by Kendall Simmons when he pulled; c) took on Marvel Smith, held outside contain, only to have Smith get him to go into the backfield while the RB went off guard to his side. The only good news is he showed incredible speed closing on the back from behind, making up about five yards in about a seven yard span.
LaMarrr Woodley
He is a beast, and may make up for the drafting o f Timmons, who has tools, but is raw and injury prone.
Kendall Simmons
Looks very good. Is in shape and showed great athleticism, pulling and wiping out Timmons on the aforementioned play.
Center
Neither Okobi or Mahan is distinguishing himself. then again, neither stuck out as playing badly IMO.
Starks vs Colon
This may get interesting. Colon looks like an athlete.
Trai Essex
Bye, Trai, we hardly knew ye! Too much time at the buffet- makes Nate Newton look svelt.
Alan Faneca
The consummate professional. He loves this team and its fans. Signed autographs for about as long a time as any one. His body language every time someone yelled, "We love you, Alan!" looked as if he was receiving a gut punch. He would humbly say, "Thank you", and mean it. He wants to retire a Steeler and is truly disappointed IMO.
Willie Parker
Goodness, Willie looks AWESOME. He is HUGE and his feet are incredibly quick. Some of the moves he made in the hole (a la Bettis) were jaw dropping and jock juking. If he stays healthy, he will have a great year. He also is a leader on the team, now. At Latrobe, he was chatting with Farrior, Foote, Hampton, and others on the defense toward the end of practice.
Ben Roethlisberger
Overall, he looked good. Though, there were a couple of bad passes, where he threw late. Both were dropped (one by Ike- surprise and the other by Anthony Smith). He also threw amazing TD passes to Miller and Nate Washington at Latrobe Stadium on Friday.
Heath Miller
Look for a big year. He was running deep seam routes regularly and looks great. Believe the Steelers will be doing more than paying lip service to the idea of making the tight end a real weapon. One no huddle package featurews two WRs, Two TEs, and a RB. They regularly would line up two tight to one side and split Miller out or put him in motion to the slot on the other side. This is going to be fun.
James Harrison
Loved Joey, but "Joey, who?" James was destroying people in backs on backers and looked great in 11 on 11s. After Timmons put on a clinic how not to play ROLB, Harrison went in took on two blockers on a sweep and blew up the play. He is a beast who is incredibly strong at the point of attack.
Willie Reid
Watched him closely. He looked very good. He got tagged a number of times. He always held onto the ball. I personally do not think it is a coincidence that Smith has levelled Reid twice and Clark levelled him once. Tomlin and the Steelers may want to see whether he is trepidatious after the lis franc injury. He shows no fear or trepidation, looks both fast and quick.
Ricardo Colclough
On Thursday, got burnt badly by Ward. He needs to step it up.
Nate Washington
With Santonio down, Nate got alot of reps and looked good.
Ced Wilson
As a critic of Ced, it pains me to say that he looked good- in a possession receiver sort of way. He caught just about everything thrown to him.
Coach Tomlin
This is one cool cat. He was out on the field dressed in black. Occasionally cracked a smile but not very regularly. Practices were tightly structured, with very little wasted time. Cowher's camps were very lackadaisical in comparison. Special teams are being paid much more than lip service by this coach, who appears to be cerebral, detail oriented, and comfrortably in control- so much so that he allows his assistants to coach, also.
Sepulveda
Punters aren't supposed to have arms like that , are they? Overall he looked good, but so did Mike Barr, who may catch on with another team. Sepulveda does kick a strange knuckling kick that befuddled returners who were not even named Colclough.

"I'll tell you the truth. Willie Reid is probably the hardest-working wide receiver we have," Clark said. "He catches the ball and runs to the end zone every time. I think sometimes that brings out the competitiveness in you. You get a guy, no matter how many times we tag him (down), he runs all the way into the end zone and the fans scream.

"I got tired of hearing it."
Willie Reid...che dispiacere nn vederlo giocare l'anno scorso  :disgusto:
Hampton made the big move after that, switching over to offense, where he lined up at FB in front of Davenport. The play went behind right guard and Hampton hit the hole full speed, running into linebacker Clint Kriewaldt. It was a wasted effort as Davenport was stopped at the 1.
After that, it was defensive end Brett Keisel's turn to line up with the other side. Keisel set up on next to left tackle and ran a drag across the end zone and Batch lofted a pass that Keisel hauled in along the back line with two defenders in tow.
On paper, the addition of Kevan Barlow seemed to strengthen a thin position for the Steelers.

But on the field, the Steelers are giving Barlow the impression that he may not make it past the first round of cuts.

That’s how light Barlow’s workload has been lately.

“Physically, I feel good. I feel better than I have in a long time,” Barlow said on Saturday. “But I didn’t get no reps today and I don’t know why. Maybe coach wanted to take a different look. You’ve got to ask him why.”
si profila il taglio?  :penso:

Steelers release WR Chris Jackson

varie ed eventuali:
*No Harrison again
*Woodley and Haggans starting at OLB
*Goo Wallace looks terrible as a 2nd team OLB
*Willie Reid looks good again
*Colclough NOT returning punts!!!!!! Very Happy
*Walter Young shows some red zone TD production
*Keisel made a lot of plays this morning, including an interception that would have been a TD in a game
*Richard Koonce looks solid again
*Polamalu shaved his head!!!

Willie Parker's goal is to be like LaDainian Tomlinson, only better

Now that he has shown he's no fluke, Willie Parker wants to reach for the stars and not the twinkle-twinkle little ones, either. He has set his sights on the North star of the NFL, the brightest of the bright.

They don't come any more luminous than San Diego halfback LaDainian Tomlinson, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player after he set league records with 31 touchdowns and 186 points last season.

"I want to be better than L.T.," Parker proclaimed yesterday between the Steelers' double practices at Saint Vincent College. "L.T. can do all that stuff. He's like a role model to me. I look up to this guy. I just want to do what he does."

The goals don't get much bigger, but then Parker backed up his 1,202-yard season in 2005 with 1,494 yards last season, third most in a franchise history that includes Franco Harris, John Henry Johnson and Jerome Bettis.

He did so by carrying the ball 337 times, fourth most in Steelers history. Now Parker wants more, much more. He does not want to leave the playing field this year; he wants to not only be their starting halfback, he wants to stick around for third downs as well.

"I want to do it all," Parker said. "I wouldn't be no running back if I say I want to come off the field in certain situations. I want to do all the situations."

His coaches are inclined to let him do it, too. New coordinator Bruce Arians believes in running his best players until their tongues hang out, and Parker might be the odds-on favorite to take over the role as third-down back, something Tomlinson does rather well.

"L.T.'s had a lot of touches, and if Willie has those kinds of touches, his yards could be the same," Arians said. "I like the fact he wants to be better. I don't ever want him on the bench unless he's tired."

And, as new running backs coach Kirby Wilson noted, why take your best players out of the game?

"Any time your best player is capable of playing [downs] one through three, you want him out there, especially with all the chips on the line."

Tomlinson ran for 1,815 yards on 348 carries for the Chargers last season. He also caught 56 passes for 508 yards. Parker caught 31 passes for 222 yards, many on first down. His 16 touchdowns set a Steelers record but were barely half Tomlinson's total.

Also, if Parker were the third-down back, he'd have more opportunities to run against defenses that are spread out to defend against the pass.

"That's something I'm beginning to love, it's something I'm taking a lot of pride in right now," Parker said of the third-down role. "I want to be on that field catching screens on third down."

Receiver Hines Ward talked to Parker before training camp and advised him to work on his blocking and receiving this summer. He did it in the spring and has continued it in Latrobe because you can't play on third downs if you can't block the blitz.

"Willie Parker has a chance to be great because he's willing to identify what he needs to work on, and he's doing it," coach Mike Tomlin said. "He's doing a heck of a job."

The L.T. goal is a lofty one, but Parker's story already has a can-you-top-this feel. Undrafted mostly because he was a backup at North Carolina, Parker played little as a rookie and then burst into the NFL consciousness in his second season, 2005, when he won the starting halfback job. He rushed for those 1,202 yards and then set a Super Bowl record by running 75 yards for a touchdown.

A fluke, a scatback who only runs outside, a one-hit wonder -- Parker heard it all, then carved out his niche near the top of the Steelers' record book last season.

Like Pittsburgh and its smoky image that won't go away, people thought of Parker as an outside runner. Even Tomlin, coaching the past six years in the NFC, thought that of him. He changed his mind after watching video of him from last season, saying he did not realize he was such a good runner inside.

"Everybody looks at my speed and says he's just so fast. They look at me as an outside runner," Parker said. "I'm always going to carry that. But I'm always banging inside too. I'm going to get the yards whatever it takes."

In fact, Parker prefers to run between the tackles.

"I'd rather have the hole inside; you can spring them into a big play. Outside, you don't usually go too far."

And, to be sure, Parker wants to go far, not so much to Tomlinson's level, but higher.

"That's a long goal and a big one, but that's what drives him," Wilson said. "He wants to be considered in that category and on that level."
