Osservazioni di Ed Bouchette al primo giorno vero di camp:

Rookie linebacker LaMarr Woodley is going to be one heck of a pass rusher. It was only the first day of drills and the running backs hate linebackers on backs drill -- a pass protection, one-on-one drill -- but Woodley ate Najeh Davenport for lunch, twice. That followed up a great spring for Woodley.

Lettura interessante.

Se dovessi mettere insieme una lista delle cose da fare per la prossima stagione, direi:

1)la difesa deve tornare a mettere pesantemente pressione sul Qb; le statistiche del 2006 dicono che i giocatori che si sono più "avvicinati" ai passer avversari sono stati Aaron Smith e Brett Keisel. Questo vuol dire sì che i due ragazzi hanno fatto il loro lavoro, ma significa altresì che gli OLB sono stati molto deficitari. Per questo ripongo molte speranze in Woodley, in effetti più in lui che in Timmons, che a mio parere deve fare un percorso di apprendistato un tantino più complesso, anche perchè - contrariamente alla stragrande maggioranza degli analisti che continua a spacciarlo per un OLB - lo vedo come il naturale sostituto di James Farrior.

2)Godsend deve tornare sui suoi standard - nelle prime due stagioni da pro un rating nettamente superiore a 90.
Le statistiche sono importanti fino a un certo punto: ci sono numeri che raccontano più verità di altri...Beniamino deve tornare a essere il giocatore che prende la giusta decisione quando conta: guardatevi le percentuali di completo sui terzi down nel 2004 e nel 2005.

3)d'accordo con la filosofia dei 3/4 ricevitori sui primi e secondi down, ma solo se è funzionale ad aprire buchi per Willie e gli altri backs; se questa squadra abbandona le corse non va molto lontano, lo insegna la storia recente (2003).

4)singolarmente ci sono alcuni giocatori che aspetto al varco; sicuramente - come è scritto nel pezzo della ESPN - Ike Taylor è a un punto importante della sua carriera. La scorsa off-season è stato gratificato di un contratto molto importante: è il momento di meritarsi quei fottuti $$$. Tra l'altro ha anche la fortuna di lavorare per un head coach che ha iniziato come DB coach in quel di Tampa.

First injury
The first injury of this Pittsburgh Steelers training camp reared its ugly head Thursday and it's somebody the team cannot afford to miss much time.

First-round pick Lawrence Timmons aggravated his groin injury that kept him out of the team's offseason workouts midway through Thursday morning's practice and spent the remainder of the session with trainers John Norwig and Ryan Grove testing the injury.

There's no initial prognosis, but the injury didn't seem serious and Timmons looked to be staying off the field more as a precaution than anything. But given the fact that he missed all of the OTAs and most of mini-camp, it's certainly something that is going to hold him back in terms of his growth as a player.

The injury came just a few plays after Timmons, a linebacker, made his first big play of this camp. Dropping into coverage, Timmons jumped a pass in the flats in zone coverage and picked off the Charlie Batch ball, making a juggling catch along the sidelines.

The highlight of the morning was a new twist on the backs on backers pass-rush, pass-protection drill. This time, it was safeties and nickel backs rushing the running backs.

The offense looked to have gotten the better of it, but Troy Polamalu and Anthony Smith were everything but unblockable, beating practically everybody they went up against.

Polamalu even beat unofficial blocking champion Dan Kreider in a heavyweight matchup. He uses a variety of spin moves and looks more like a defensive end rushing rather than a safety.

Smith, meanwhile, was just explosive, running through people to get to the QB. He hits like a truck.

The offensive star of the drill was Carey Davis. The first-year running back went 5-0 in the drill, even stopping Smith on the final attempt of the drill. Smith slipped coming in and never really made it to Davis with any force, but the young back already had stoned Ricardo Colclough, Bryant McFadden, Harrison Smith and Deshea Townsend.

Perhaps that's why Davis is the only surprise player on the No. 1 punt coverage team where he plays one of the wings.

QB Ben Roethlisberger looked sharper today. He made a great pass deep over the middle while rolling to his right to Hines Ward. Ward had gotten behind the safeties and the duo made it look easy.

Ryan Clark was back working with the No. 1 Okie base defense this morning.

Also of note is that sources tell me that running back Kevan Barlow, signed as a possible backup to Willie Parker, is the worst character guy the Steelers have had since this source has been here. That dates back nearly 10 years.

The players are also upset that they do not have a scheduled day off in the first two weeks of camp. They're not complaining publicly about it - yet.

Bob Ligashesky takes it over the top in the kicking game. He's the Steelers' new special teams coach. Think Cowher sprinting up and down the sideline in his early days as special teams coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Ligashesky, a graduate of Sto-Rox High School and IUP, also coached the special teams at Pitt. He makes more noise than the freight trains that thunder pass the two teams' South Side practice facility, but he has toned it down since spring.

"He's calmed down a little since we had the coaching sessions," linebacker James Harrison said.

What hasn't calmed down is coach Mike Tomlin's commitment to getting it right in the kicking game. He held his first all-special teams practice yesterday morning, the first of seven, in addition to the time spent in other practices on the kicking game.

"We just want to give it it's just due," Tomlin said. "That's a legitimate phase of football. It's a significant number of snaps in a football game, so we're putting the time in there while we have the time."

There were years, under Chuck Noll, the Steelers did not have a special teams coach. Tomlin has not one, not two, but three --Ligashesky is assisted by Amos Jones. Ray Jackson, who is in charge of the team's player development, also helps out with the kicking game.

How much more emphasis is put on special teams this year?

"A lot," said defensive end Brett Keisel, a former special teams ace. "Obviously we have an entire practice dedicated to it."

Most starters got a reprieve from playing on special teams in the past; not now. Starters flood the various special teams units.

"Coach Tomlin talked last night how special teams played a big part in the success of the Chicago Bears last year," linebacker Clark Haggans said. "That's why we had practice today. Special teams determines the outcome of two, three, four games that could get you in the playoffs or a playoff win or could get you to the Super Bowl."

Tomlin will switch some players who are competing for jobs, particularly in the offensive line where, for example, Chukky Okobi has been running with the first team at center. Soon, newcomer Sean Mahan could get his turn to run at first-team center.

"We visit that on a nightly basis on some guys who are competing for jobs," Tomlin said. "We will do that from time to time at every position."

Practice and fireworks

Training camp just opened for the Steelers and already there are fireworks.

No fights on the practice field -- not yet, anyway -- but there will be fireworks tomorrow night after practice. Zambelli International will stage a fireworks show at 9:20 p.m. after the Steelers hold their annual night practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium.

Practice begins at 7 p.m., and fans can get autographs of the players and coaches on the field at 6:45 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children under 18 and seniors, and free to those under 12 with a parent. Proceeds benefit the Greater Latrobe School District sports programs.

Quick hits

The Steelers talked to former NFL quarterback Aaron Brooks, but have decided not to sign him.

Kicker Jeff Reed and safety Ryan Clark have had their contracts reworked to create salary-cap room this year. The players receive the same amount but in a bonus form, a technicality that allows the team to push some accounting of their pay into future years.

Rookies Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley, the Steelers' top draft picks, played outside linebacker with the first-team defense in 7-on-7 passing drills, dropping into coverage.

Woodley says he weighs 264, and the coaches want him down to 255-260.

Wide receiver Santonio Holmes and running back Verron Haynes have not practiced.

Punter Mike Barr has never made an NFL team, yet this is his fifth summer in an NFL training camp. He started out in 2003 with the Washington Redskins, and this makes it four in a row in Latrobe. Barr's chances to make the team dipped when the Steelers drafted Dan Sepulveda in the fourth round. But Barr looks good and was booming them high and deep in practice yesterday afternoon.

It appears Sepulveda will hold for Jeff Reed's kicks.

To start the 10-minute team drill (11 on 11) that ended practice yesterday afternoon, the Steelers deployed three wide receivers on first down. On second down, they used three tight ends. They are things new coordinator Bruce Arians talked about using all spring.

Quarterbacks spent a few idle moments during morning special teams practice trying to lob 20-yard passes into garbage buckets. Former coordinator Kevin Gilbride had his quarterbacks do that often at Saint Vincent College in the summer of 1999, which prompted an old scout to note wryly back then that, when you practice throwing into garbage cans, you get good at throwing into garbage cans.

Chissà come sta andando Gary Russell; quest'anno è lui la mia scommessa: le notizie non esattamente positive sul conto di Barlow magari lo avvicinano all'agognato posto a roster. Da tener presente che Verron Haynes è ancora a mezzo servizio e chissà mai se il ginocchio andrà a posto.
FWP e Davenport certi...dietro di loro se la giocano tutti.
Lo stesso Davis, visto il risalto che coach T sta dando agli special team, potrebbe farla a Kunh.

Deve solo disciplinarsi un attimino, imparare a dosare la bestia che è in lui; l'anno scorso ha concesso qualcosa proprio per troppa foga ed ovviamente poca esperienza nel riconoscere i giochi e le situazioni. Diciamo che tutti gli infortuni delle S la passata stagione sono almeno valsi a svezzare il ragazzo e farlo affacciare alla sua seconda stagione con già qualche partita di football nelle gambe e nelle testa.
Dite che aggiudicarsi uno così al fanta a 0,5 e firmarlo per 3 anni è un affare discreto?

Peccato per Timmons; ho come l'impressione che il ragazzo sia un pò troppo carico, troppo desideroso di dimostrare, di farsi apprezzare...poi va in campo, forza da subito e il risultato sono queste continue noie muscolari che ne stanno rallentando l'apprendistato. Tranquillo LT3, ti aspettiamo!!!

provvederò (spero in tempi brevi) a sistemare il tutto

accetto consigli per eventuali altre modifiche

se riuscissi a procurarmi determinati codec potrei lavorare sul materiale 2006 che possiedo: riesco a leggerlo solo con VLC e mi serve che me lo legga Windows Media Player.
qualcuno ha la soluzione a questo problema?
