Eccoci qua, pronti per una nuova stagione iniziata quasi ufficialmente stasera con una partita di esibizione di nostri minor leaguers contro Florida Atlantic. Per la cronaca, vittoria 3-2 in una gara di 7 innings. Prima vera gara di Spring training mercoledì contro i Marlins.
Sarà durissima ripetersi quest'anno, pitching staff quasi completamente rivoluzionato...vedremo!

Superato lo schock per l'arresto del manager, che fortunatamente ha fatto il mea culpa, è tempo di baseball giocato ed è stata annunciata la rotazione della prima settimana.
L'opening day, e qui non c'erano dubbi, lancerà Chris Carpenter, appuntamento per domenica prossima alle 8.10 ora New York in casa contro i Mets. La partità sarà preceduta dalle celebrazioni per l'anello dello scorso anno!
La seconda gara, in programma martedì notte con i Mets sarà lanciata da Kip Wells, che farà il suo debutto ufficiale al nuovo Busch Stadium mentre mercoledì notte toccherà a Looper fare la sua prima partita da partente contro la sua ex squadra. Dopodichè lancerà di nuovo Carpenter venerdì a Houston, seguito da Wainwright e Reyes.

Finalmente stanotte si parte, Carpenter vs Glavine aprirà la stagione mlb. Speriamo bene, abbiamo tagliato Rincon l'altro giorno e il roster a 25 è pronto per l'opening day. Play ball!

Siamo 1-4 dopo 5 partite, il campanello d'allarme è fortissimo ormai. Ieri ho visto 5 inning prima che la stanchezza di una settimana durissima avesse la meglio...beh, sono stati 5 inning veramente giocati male, soprattutto in attacco. Giriamo male, non selezioniamo i giusti lanci, le nostre punte di diamante stanno andando veramente male (Pujols, Rolen ed Edmonds in uno slump pauroso) e in generale fare un punto è difficilissimo. L'unico punto di ieri è arrivato dal duo Kennedy-Bennett, non certo i giocatori che ti aspetti di vedere a trainare l'attacco. Ieri Reyes poteva fare ben poco contro Oswalt che appare in gran forma, tuttavia ha mostrato alti e bassi. I battitori lo vedevano bene, una quantità enorme di foul ball sono state battute lasciando la sensazione che fosse solo questione di timing per fargli una cascata di punti. La pallina era quasi sempre in una zona buona per il battitore, questo soprattutto nei primissimi inning. Poi si è ripreso il ragazzo e ha mostrato sprazzi del giocatore che è stato in gara 1 delle world series. Anche furbo, splendido l'out fatto con pickoff al runner in prima. Inizia a preoccupare un po' il bullpen, ogni sera prende punti. Per adesso sempre ininfluenti, ma per una squadra abituata a vedere il suo bullpen prendere pochissimi punti non è cosa buona. Dopo una settimana mi sento di poter dire che la rotazione non sembra male, l'infortunio di Carpenter sembra rientrato e martedì dovrebbe giocare, ci manca tantissimo l'attacco purtroppo. Speriamo si diano una svegliata prima che le altre inizino a correre.

The chorus cries out: What's wrong with Albert?

"That's OK, because I ask myself that, what's wrong, when I go through it," Pujols said Saturday night, after the Cardinals quickly succumbed to Houston starter Roy Oswalt in a 5-1 loss to the Astros. "I want to know what's wrong, too. But at the same time I say, 'You know what? I'm glad I'm healthy, and I'm glad that I'm here.'

"This is part of the game. You can't make things happen. You can't force it. It has to come to you. What can you do? You hit the ball hard but right at somebody. Or you get a good pitch to hit and you miss. It's part of the game."

Pujols was cordial and accommodating after Saturday's game in discussing his dry hitting spell, but make no mistake, this is bugging him. He's a perfectionist. And so after he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play in the ninth inning, Pujols retreated to the clubhouse and headed to team video director Chad Blair, who cued up the last at-bat.

Pujols doesn't normally study video immediately after a game, but on this night he locked himself into an intense study session, wanting to see how Oswalt got him out. Oswalt had thrown a fastball, down and in. Pujols believed he should have crushed it.

"I missed it," he said. "That was a home run pitch right there, and I hit into a double play. You get frustrated. When something like that happens you think, 'What happened?' "

Pujols has one hit in his first 17 at-bats of 2007. He's not alone; as a team the Cardinals are batting .192, and slugging .286. If this happens to another player, we shrug. It's a mini-slump, and all hitters endure them.

But Pujols has impossibly high standards. His greatness has become so ordinary, so routine, so expected, that it probably cost him last year's National League MVP Award. Pujols hangs ridiculously good numbers every season, and so we tend to take them for granted. Pujols' hitting accomplishments are viewed as something natural, not supernatural, because he does this all the time. There's no shock value.

Unless, of course, he isn't hitting. Then it's news. And we scratch our heads and wonder if Pujols is feeling OK physically or distracted by personal issues. He had a bland spring training, batting .286 with two homers. And now this, hitless in four of his first five games. I checked through his career batting logs and discovered that Pujols has gone hitless in four of five games on only a few occasions: twice in 2001, once in 2003, and once in 2005. His worst drought was a five-game hitless streak in September 2001.

"Physically I feel right," Pujols said. "I'm seeing the ball good, and that's the main thing. I might be a little jumpy, or a little bit late on the swing. But most of the time, I'm seeing the ball good. I just don't feel comfortable at the plate. Obviously I don't feel I'm where I need to be. I had a tough spring training. What can I say? I'll find it."

How long will it take?

"Hopefully not too long," he said. "Hopefully it will be sooner than later."

Are you close?

"Nope," he said, smiling. "And when I get close, I'll tell you."

Actually, Pujols won't have to tell us. We'll know by the crack of the bat, and a look of anguish on the pitcher's face.

dopo aver toccato un terrificante 1 su 18 albert pujols al terzo inning contro houston ha battuto il suo primo home run della stagione. anche se questo avrà degli effetti devastanti sul mio fantabaseball, il ritorno di pujols nella sua anormalità rende felice credo tutti i tifosi di baseball

Vittoria importantissima stasera, lanciati da una strepitosa partita di Kip Wells (1 valida e 7k in 7 innings con soli 89 lanci) vinciamo 10-1 a Houston aggiudicandoci la serie e rimettendoci un po' in carreggiata. Note positive dall'attacco, finalmente produttivi. Pujols 2 su 5 e scrive 1 nella casella degli hr con un 2run shot nel terzo inning, Rolen anche lui 2 su 5 con 4 rbi, il punto che ci ha portato in vantaggio e un doppio a basi piene al nono inning che ha pulito le basi, Molina 3 su 5 con 3 rbi. Edmonds va 1 su 4, appare ancora fuori fase al piatto. Bene anche in difesa, salvo quella palla malgiudicata al nono inning da Taguchi che ci è costata lo shutout.
