Many national media outlets reported on Tuesday night that the 49ers had agreed to terms on an extension with running back Frank Gore. Of course, our elated fans probably came over to see what was on the team’s official website and had their excitement tempered when they didn’t see any mention of this news.
It is team policy not to report any news until it’s actual news which in terms of signings or re-signings will not occur until a player has officially inked his name on the dotted line.
So, when you read that Gore or Nate Clements or Michael Lewis have agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers, that news has more than likely been reported to the national media by their agents.
Even when a player and a team agree to terms there are usually many details that need to be worked through and in rare instances, those details can blow up an agreement. That’s why you won’t see teams reporting any news regarding negotiations with players, coaches or otherwise until contracts are signed, sealed and delivered.
There was never any question that logic pointed toward the 49ers and Frank Gore agreeing to a long-term extension before the start of the season.
But when agent Drew Rosenhaus told the 49ers his client would not sign unless he became the highest-paid player in the game, it created a little doubt about how smoothly this would happen.
In the end, the right thing was done. The 49ers gave a nice contract to a kid who needed the money. The 49ers also were able to accomplish this deal because they were so diligent with the salary cap the past two years. Gore's new deal is a reported five-year contract worth more than $28 million, according to ESPN.com.
The 49ers could have played hard ball. They essentially had Gore's rights for the next three seasons. But, in the NFL, what goes around comes around. If the 49ers had decided to use their leverage to force Gore to sign a deal below market value, it undoubtedly would have had negative effects in the future with other players.
The organization had already spent nearly $40 million in guaranteed money for the likes of Nate Clements, Michael Lewis, Aubrayo Franklin, Tully Banta-Cain and Ashley Lelie. It was imperative that they take care of their best player - and the player who was most responsible for the team's surprising success in 2006.

Gore has overcome a lot to get to this point. His was enrolled in special-education classes in English and math during his first two years of high school because of a learning disability. If he had continued on that path, he would not have qualified for college. His high school coach and mother fought for him to be included in the regular classes. Then, Gore had to work extra hours to make up the credit.
When he made it to the University of Miami (Fla.) as a heralded running back, his career never got going because of major injuries to both knees. Of course, there were doubts whether he would ever be able to play at the next level.
All the while, he faced hardships at home. His mother, Liz, was battling kidney disease. She still awaits a transplant.
When he made it to the NFL, a lot of pundits criticized the 49ers for selecting Gore in the third round. Sports Illustrated called Gore the most overrated back in the 2005 draft.
He played the season with torn labrums in both shoulders. He underwent two extensive surgeries in the offseason to correct the problem. Then, he showed enough progress in training camp to allow the 49ers to trade Kevan Barlow to the Jets for a fourth-round draft pick. (Barlow's playing time decreased throughout the season with the Jets; he was released in the offseason and has yet to be signed.)
Last season, Gore started 16 games. It was his first complete season since his senior year of high school. Because of his history of injuries, Gore could not take the risk of playing in another NFL game without getting a new contract.
* * *
Gore was scheduled to make the minimum salary for a third-year player this season. After setting the team's single-season rushing record, he needed to capitalize on his record-setting season and sign a long-term extension to get some guaranteed money.
Fortunately, the 49ers were willing to pay good money for his services. Fortunately, Gore's agent was willing to get the deal accomplished.
Things never got contentious. There was never any threat of a holdout. The 49ers did the right thing, and demonstrated a willingness to reward a player for a job well-done.
In the end, the 49ers and Gore (and, yes, Rosenhaus) handled the situation perfectly.

Coach Mike Nolan said Wednesday that the contract agreement for 49ers running back Frank Gore comes at a great time.
Nolan confirmed at the NFL annual meeting in Arizona on Wednesday that Gore agreed to terms on a new deal, reportedly five years for about $28 million. The Press Democrat is not at the league meetings, but we obtained a transcript of Nolan's Q&A session with reporters.
"We got Frank agreed," Nolan said. "That will be good. I spoke with Frank about it (Tuesday evening). We had a nice chat about it. We met with him in the afternoon and it worked out well.
"It was a little early because Frank just finished his second year. But as we said, if you identify somebody you want to have that is a good player, that you want to have around for awhile, it's good to get it done early because the longer you want, the more expensive it gets."
A lot of times when a team signs a running back to a long-term contract, the player is coming off several strong seasons and his body has already taken a pounding and might be starting to wear down.
But Gore should have several good seasons ahead of him. He turns 24 in May. He carried the ball just 127 times as a rookie before developing into the work horse last season with 312 carries and a team-leading 61 receptions. He gained a franchise-record 1,695 rushing yards, tops in the NFC.
Nolan said there is always a concern when signing a veteran running back to a long-term contract, but he does not have a lot of those fears with Gore.
"The good thing is that when we looked at the other running backs, when they re-did their deals, they were most of them four, five or six years into their careers," Nolan said.
"Frank just finished his second and we wanted to go out ahead of it. We get him as a young player, when he's still out early in his career. That's a good thing. He had an outstanding year and if he has another one, it gets all the more expensive. And we don't think it's a fluke. If you think it's a situation where the guy just lucks into it, like Timmy Smith in the Super Bowl year - but that's not the case (with Gore)."
When asked if he envisions Gore being a 350-carry back this season, Nolan expressed a desire to find another running back to give him a break, at times.
"Hopefully he'll be a little less than this past year," Nolan said. "It would be nice to get somebody in there who could take some of the load. But he is the guy for us. We'll see how things go. We have two good backups behind him in Michael Robinson in his second year at running back and Mo Hicks.
"Somebody has to take some of the load off of him. He doesn't like coming out, which is a good thing. He really enjoys playing, being on the field. So, I don't have any problem with that. You just sometimes have to be careful. There's a lot of wear and tear on a running back who runs like he does. He doesn't shy away from too much and he's not a huge guy, although he's stocky and sturdy. He takes a lot of punishment."
Hicks is a restricted free agent. If he signs an offer sheet with another team, the 49ers would have the opportunity to match the contract to retain his services.

Re: Il Lato Giusto Della Baia - Frank's Home!
If the Seattle Seahawks are shopping wide receiver Darrell Jackson for a trade, as has been rumored, there could be a few takers.
The San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints are teams with interest in acquiring Jackson, and there is speculation that a reunion with the former Seattle executive who chose Jackson in the third round of the 2000 draft, Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson, could happen via trade.

Matt Maiocco frena subito i miei entusiasmi :(
It is true that the Seahawks are shopping receiver Darrell Jackson. But the word is that there is nothing happening with the 49ers - at this time, anyway. The 49ers have not completely ruled out the possibility of acquiring Jackson, but there have been no serious discussions. Jackson led the Seahawks with 63 receptions for 956 yards and 10 TDs last season. Do the Seahawks really want their leading receiver from one season to end up on the roster of a division rival?

Rosenhaus also represents running back Frank Gore, whom is seeking a contract extension. The 49ers also would like to sign Gore to a new deal, but not at the price Rosenhaus is currently asking. Rosenhaus is believed to be asking the 49ers to make Gore the highest-paid player in the league.
