San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner has agreed in principle to become the San Diego Chargers next coach, sources told ESPN.com.

In addition to the Turner hiring, longtime league assistant coach Ted Cottrell will meet early this week with San Diego officials which should result in the Chargers hiring Cottrell as the club's new defensive coordinator.

Cottrell, who worked in the NFL office in 2006, has extensive experience with the 3-4 defense that San Diego used last season.

Turner is one of six candidates to have interviewed for the position. The other known head coach candidates Gary Gibbs (New Orleans), Mike Zimmer (Atlanta), Mike Singletary (San Francisco), Ron Rivera (Chicago) and Rex Ryan (Baltimore) are all coaches whose expertise is on the defensive side. All but Singletary are current coordinators.

Turner has twice previously been a head coach in the league. Cottrell has interviewed in the past for head coach positions, and came very close to landing the top job in San Francisco four years ago, but the meeting with Chargers officials is strictly an interview for the team's defensive coordinator spot, several sources said.

San Diego officials prefer to retain a 3-4 defense, the scheme for which the personnel is best suited, and hiring Cottrell would permit that. Cottrell was actually recommended to Schottenheimer by Smith when then-Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was hired by the Dallas Cowboys as their new head coach.

Marty Schottenheimer instead leaned toward hiring his younger brother, Kurt Schottenheimer, as the replacement for Phillips. In addition to Marty Schottenheimer, the Chargers, who posted an NFL-best 14-2 record in 2006 but were ousted in the divisional round of the playoffs, have lost five assistant coaches since the end of the season. That includes both coordinators.

Cottrell, 59, possesses 22 seasons of NFL experience as an assistant coach, including three stints as a defensive coordinator. He most recently worked as coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings (2004-2005). Cottrell lost his job when the Vikings fired coach Mike Tice after the 2005 season.

UPDATE: Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner will become the next head coach of the San Diego Chargers. Glazer says Turner is already making initial preparations for getting his coaching staff in place, and that Ted Cottrell is the front-runner to be his defensive coordinator.

E secondo te ritornerebbe come OC dopo essere stato licenziato? non credo. Secondo me verrà promosso Sullivan anche perchè è ormai tardi, tempo non ce n'è, iniziano le scouting combine e gente disponibile in gira non ce n'è molta.
Turner ci ha messo proprio nei guai.

Cmq, a parte le implicazione per i niners, mi sembra una scelta assurda da parte dei Chargers; Turner ha già avuto due possibilità come HC ed ha miseramente fallito ed ora deve subentrare ad un allenatore che l'anno scorso ha avuto un record di 14-2. Boh...
Per quanto rigurda la succcessione io credo che la cosa migliore sia la soluzione interna, ovvero la promozione di Sullivan.

Di Zampese avevo sentito parlare molto bene e se non erro il suo nome era venuto fuori anche la passata stagione quando abbiamo poi assunto Turner, certo poi bisognerebbe anche vedere se i Bengals concedono l'autorizzazione ad intervistarlo. Ritengo anch'io che la continuità del sistema con la promozione di Sullivan sia la cosa migliore.

Su Turner aspetto l'ufficialità perchè anche con i Cowboys sembrava fatta, posso capire che si parli cmq di lavoro e di un posto da head coach in una delle squadre più forti della lega ma il suo comportamento in questa offseason non mi è piaciuto per nulla dopo i proclami della passata stagione e dopo che gli era stato prolungato il contratto non più di una settimana fa.

Lo vedo molto improbabile di Mariucci sia per via della sua cacciata da parte di York qualche stagione or sono, sia perchè vorrebbe dire un ritorno al WCO e Nolan ha già detto di voler mantenere il sistema di Turner anche se questo partisse.

Se non ricordo male Mariucci fu cacciato più che da York da Donahue perchè era un uomo di fiducia di Carmen Policy, quindi ora che non c'è più Donahue (per fortuna) potrebbe anche tornare, ma chi glielo fa fare di abbandonare una comoda poltrona da analista tv?

Chargers o Turner cambia poco di chi sia la colpa adesso aspettiamo le mosse di Nolan per giudacre sta cosa, speriamo di non bruciarci A. Smith con un nuovo cordinatore.

in realtà aveva detto Bay Area e cmq il contratto gli era stato rinnovato non più di una settimana fa spendendo parole di apprezzamento per tutti e per la possibilità di continuare il lavoro iniziato con Smith e soci.

Per carità io sono il primo che capisce che è comunque un lavoro ed un posto da head coach non si trova tutti i giorni però avrei preferito non leggere tutti queste sue dichiarazioni.
