The most important call of Sunday's game for the Steelers was simply "heads."

Joey Porter, Pittsburgh's designated coin-flip caller, chose heads at the start of overtime, giving the Steelers the ball to start overtime.

"I remember telling Larry (Foote), when we won it, I said, 'See you in the locker room, we're going to make a play,'" said Steelers receiver Hines Ward. "It was almost destined, when (Shayne Graham) missed the field goal, it was like we were meant to win."

It didn't take long for the Steelers to make that play.

And after the coin came up heads, it didn't take a fortune teller to tell you how the game would end. Not counting the kneel-down to end the fourth quarter following Graham's miss, the Steelers' three possessions of the fourth quarter resulted in a 14-play, 97-yard drive, an eight-play, 63-yard drive and an eight play 66-yard drive.

Overtime wouldn't be nearly that time consuming. On the third play of the extra period, Ben Roethlisberger found Santonio Holmes on a slant for a 67-yard touchdown.

The play was the same play the Steelers had run right before the two-minute warning, which went to Holmes for 34 yards to the Bengal 28 to set up Jeff Reed's game-tying 35-yard field goal with 1:07 left in the game.

"They kept running the same blitz all the time - It was their blitz of the day, I guess," Ward said. "Ben saw it and was on the same page as Santonio and gave him a chance to pitch and catch."

Ward said the Bengals repeatedly blitzed a safety from the backside, leaving the cornerbacks to play outside the receivers, opening up the slants inside.

"You'd think they wouldn't continue running it, and they kept doing it," Ward said. "We executed and picked it up. Ben threw a great ball to let Santonio do what he did."

Holmes said he and Roethlisberger both read the play. It was an adjustment when they saw where the free safety lined up on the play.

"(Roethlisberger) is always alerting me, trying to keep me ready for the sight adjustments," said Holmes, a rookie out of Ohio State. "It was a great sight adjustment. He got it out quick and made a great play."

Holmes got inside Tory James, who couldn't catch up with him on the slant, and then he made safety Madieu Williams miss, too.

"They had been running that play all game. Roethlisberger was hitting receivers on the run and this one was just on a dead sprint," Williams said. "(Holmes) never lost stride. The way he caught that ball he was already full speed when he caught the ball. He was full speed when he caught the ball. That makes it tougher. ... It was like he was going to hit his head on the goal post."

Although Holmes didn't run into the goal post, he was looking just above it to Paul Brown Stadium's big video board.

"It was running through my mind - 'I can't look behind me,'" he said. "I looked at the big screen, saw them coming out and knew they weren't going to catch me - I've got a touchdown, I'm going to win the game

La slant è una delle tracce preferite da Hines...se il timing è giusto è quasi impossibile da coprire; la velocità di Santonio, e il fatto che la safety dei Bengals fosse in blitz, hanno fatto il resto.

Altra cosa: sto leggendo degli ottimi commenti sulla partita di Willie Colon; il ragazzino del Bronx pare abbia randellato chiunque si trovasse a capitare dalle sue parti...mi dispiace non averci prestato attenzione durante la partita, anche perchè tra il cenone e cazzate varie :ciucco:

Starks è un RFA...con la richiesta che c'è di uomini di linea potremmo ricavarci un discreto pick al draft. Anche Simmons mi sembra in procinto di perdere il suo posto da titolare...lato destro della linea >>> Kemoeatu, Colon

anche io ho letto commenti più che positivi, ma nn ho potuto vederlo in azione.
sembrerebbe che il nostro draft sia stato un più che ottimo draft: 3 delle nostre prime 4 scelte si sono praticamente conquistate il posto da titolare.

santonio holmes, nonostante il ruolo marginale della prima parte di stagione, ha messo su 800+ yards e 3TD complessivi; inoltre leggo che le sue statistiche sui punt return sono migliori di quelle di randle el, fumbles a parte :gazza:

anthony smith in azione per me è l'essenza del football...nn aggiungo altro

willie colon ha destato questi commenti positivi, ma prima vorrei vederlo in azione io :figo:

se per santonio il maggiore problema è stato sui punt return un motivo c'è: lui è pericolosissimo in campo aperto ma nn è assolutamente un returner e infatti per questo ruolo abbiamo draftato willie reid: il ragazzo è stato infortunato per tutta la stagione e di lui nn abbiamo visto nulla. speriamo si ristabilisca e possa migliorare nella prossima stagione i nostri special team, un reparto che ci ha continuamente messo in difficoltà

Sì, ha giocato bene ma l'ha cazzata l'ha fatta anche lui. Sul catch & run di Ward (che inizialmente aveva fintato di lanciare la palla) a fine terzo quarto che ci ha portato sulle 5 yards si è fatto fischiare una penalità per taunting (:roll:)... Vi lascio immaginare la reazione di Cowher...

Detto questo ha giocato sì un'ottima partita e, come avete detto voi, su diversi siti sono scattati gli apprezzamenti verso di lui.

a proposito di special team...non so te, ma io di gardocki non ne posso più; sì è vero da quando gioca tra i pro non gli hanno mai bloccato un punt, ma è una cosa che passa in secondo piano se calci così corto come ha fatto lui quest'anno, concedendo spesso agli avversari ottime posizioni di partenza

sul fronte Cowher, ieri c'è stato l'ultima riunione stagionale prima del rompete le righe...all'uscita c'erano facce commosse, a qualcuno è quasi scappata una lacrimuccia: insomma mi sa che siamo vicini all'epilogo

l'importante è che una decisione, in un senso o nell'altro, venga presa abbastanza in fretta...non siamo (potenzialmente) l'unica squadra alla ricerca di un coach

ultima cosa...se Cowher lascia, mi sa che l'anno prossimo non vedremo Porter in black & gold; l'anno prossimo è l'ultimo del suo contratto e pagherà una cifra poco sopra i 6 mil $ >>> trade?

anche lui non ha avuto un'annata positiva...in alcune partite è stato assolutamente assente: nell'ultima contro i Ravens è stato outplayed dal back-up di Ogden; eppure resta un leader, uno che gasa i compagni e innervosisce gli avversari, principe del trash talking

...se si riesce a ristrutturare a cifre decenti lo terrei, poi è chiaro dipende anche dalle sue pretese :itsallbusiness:

Bill Cowher and outside linebacker Joey Porter are closer than your typical coach and player.
When Porter addressed the possibility of holding out prior to the season because he wanted to renegotiate his contract, Cowher begged him to report to training camp because he needed his fiery leadership.

Against his better wishes, Porter complied because of his tremendous respect for Cowher.

In the opener against Miami, Porter kissed Cowher on the sideline after returning an interception for a touchdown.

Following Sunday's 23-17 overtime win over Cincinnati, Porter put his relationship with Cowher to the test when he asked Cowher in the locker room if he was leaving.

Even if Cowher leaves after 15 seasons, Porter, 29, insists he wants to finish his career with the team that drafted him. He said it's wrong to assume he doesn't want to remain with the Steelers if Cowher isn't around.

"No matter who the coach is, I play for the Steelers. I'm the type of player I want to start what I finish," Porter said immediately after the game. "I started here, I want to finish here. Give me the opportunity to be a lifelong Steeler."

Following Monday's exit interview with Cowher, Porter re-emphasized his loyalty to the Steelers. He said he doesn't know whether Cowher is coming back, but that Cowher's decision won't impact what he does.

Porter feels like he's done his part. His sack total dipped from 10 1/2 a year ago, when he led all NFL linebackers, to seven, which led the Steelers during a season in which they missed the playoffs after winning Super Bowl XL.

Porter recorded two more tackles this season (63-61) and continued his role as the team's emotional leader.

"At the end of the day, it's going to be up to the organization. I'm here," said Porter, who ranks fourth on the Steelers' all-time list with 60 career sacks. "At the beginning of the season, everyone wants to know, 'Oh, why does he have such a bad attitude?'

"I've never had an attitude toward the Steelers. This is home for me. I knew how it was going to be when I got back, I was going to resume my position as a leader and try to win football games."

Said safety Ryan Clark: "Joey's going to run the team. We're fine with that. He has muscles."

But if Cowher leaves, will the new coach want Porter to assume the same role he had under Cowher? And, if the new coach goes in a different direction, will Porter's role be diminished?

Also, coming off an 8-8 season, will the fiscally conservative Steelers be willing to pay Porter more than $6.1 million in 2007 in the final year of his contract -- making him one of the team's highest-paid players -- or will he be asked to renegotiate his contract, or even be forced to take a pay cut if he wants to remain with the Steelers?

"It is a business, and just like everybody else I've got to make the right business move for my family," Porter said. "It's something that comes with the business, and if you have an opportunity which I feel like you should have, what's the difference of making me wait another year? If I mean that much to you, like I think I should, go ahead and take care of me, make it happen."

Porter's contract situation could develop into one of the biggest stories in the offseason.

Offensive tackle Max Starks, a restricted free agent, is the only player whom the Steelers have to tender an offer or risk losing without receiving compensation.

Remember, the Steelers aren't obligated to address Porter's contract until after next season. Unless redoing Porter's deal is beneficial to everyone.

After speaking with Cowher yesterday, Porter compared his contract situation with that of his coach. Porter didn't say whether he discussed his contract with Cowher.

"That's like coach Cowher's decision," Porter said. "I can't give you that answer right now. I don't know when, but that time will come. Until it comes, my address isn't going to change. I'm going to be where I'm supposed to be. I'm not going nowhere."

Given what happened last year prior to training camp -- especially if Cowher doesn't return for a 16th season with Porter as his team leader -- Porter's uncertain contract future with the Steelers could test his loyalty and management's patience.

Will Bill Cowher coach the Steelers in 2007? The answer might come Tuesday.

A Pittsburgh Steelers source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that team chairman Dan Rooney and team president Art Rooney II will meet with Cowher and are expected to push Cowher to make a decision Tuesday on whether he will resign after 15 seasons as head coach.

The team source told Mortensen that the Rooneys believe Cowher likely is going to walk away and want to start the process of finding a new coach, in part because their in-house potential replacements, offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm, are potential head coaching candidates for other NFL teams.

dunque...le nostre necessità sono rinforzare la O-Line e migliorare il reparto LB.
in FA ci sono molti nomi appetibili per quanto riguarda quest'ultimo reparto, ma credo che gli steelers ancora una volta vadano a pescare al draft per le loro necessità.
in molti fanno il nome di paul posluzny come prima scelta: il miglior linebacker che i Nittany Lions abbiano mai avuto, ma nn si sa se il ragazzo sia adatto alla 3-4 di PIT

A mio parere i "needs" principali sono quelli della OLine, un CB e un LB (il quartetto è sempre molto forte ma gli anni passano anche per loro). Se al primo giro si vuole andare a prendere qualcuno per la linea offensiva farei il nome di Justin Blalock (di Texas), presupponendo che Joe Thomas sia ovviamente già andato.
Il mio sogno sarebbe comunque prendere Patrick Willis, cioè la reincarnazione di Ray Lewis, ma credo sarà difficile... :gazza:

Al secondo giro qualcuno (...Mike? :pollicesu: ) dice che potremmo prendere Michael Bush, RB di Louisville.
