Image

On the Eagles and the decision:

"It's an iconic franchise. ... I knew what this place was all about. It's where I wanted to be.

"But I love my players. We had a great culture at Oregon. Have an unbelievable coaching staff. It was really known versus unknowns. It was just very, very difficult to say good-bye to men that I truly love and respect. The way our players handled it when I talked to them the other day was nothing short of amazing to me. I probably cried more than they did.

"I knew this was the place for me. It was just trying to figure out a way to do it the right way. I wanted to be the first to tell my players. ... I want to tell you how impressed I was with both Howie and Jeffrey that allowed me to do this in a manner where my players were going to find this out from me first-hand, and it wasn't going to be something they saw on a Twitter account or a local TV station. That part is extremely important to me.

"The game of football to me is always about relationships. And the game of football is about people, and you win because you have great people."

Kelly said Andy Reid texted him and said "Just be yourself."

"The fact that Andy Reid reached out to me and told me about his experience here just told me what this organization is all about. There's not a classier guy.

The decision is final:

"I burned the boat. I'm not going back. I made the jump. I want to be an NFL coach."

On adjusting from college to the NFL:

"Football is football, and this is football at its highest level."

On his QB situation:

"I'll say this ... there's perception and reality. Perception is we run our quarterback all the time. Reality is that's not the case.

"Our scheme is going to be personnel driven. ... I'm a huge fan of Nick [Foles]. We hit him as many times as we could hit someone and he kept getting up. ... He's tough, he's accurate ... and I'm excited about him like I'm excited about all the guys."

On the possibility of using Michael Vick:

"Yeah. I'm going to look at everybody. If you can throw the ball and run, I'll take you out there. We're going to look at everything we can do to put the best product on the field... There's nothing that's on the board right now. There's nothing that's off the board right now."

On control of the organization:

"That's never been an issue, never was an issue for me. I'm a football coach. I'm not a general manager. I'm not a salary cap guy. I coach football."

On the defense:

Kelly said he hasn't decided on a 4-3 vs. 3-4 but will have an "attacking" D.

Cole-Kendricks OLB?

Kelly will bring his up-tempo offense, which averaged a play every 20.9 seconds in four seasons at Oregon. By comparison, the Patriots' no-huddle spread, which was a full second faster than any other team, was four seconds per play slower than Kelly's Ducks this season.

Oregon ran 1,077 plays in just 13 games this season, which would have ranked seventh -- just one spot behind the Eagles -- in the NFL's 16-game schedule this season.

Oregon's average of 82.8 plays per game would easily beat New England's league-leading average of 74.4.

In our attitude, every sack is the quarterback’s fault. lt is not a sack if the quarterback throws the ball away. Nobody ever lost a game 0n an incomplete pass. Throw the ball away, and give us another opportunity to make a first down. lf you throw it away, it is second-and-10 for the first down. lf you take the sack, it is second-and-16 for the down. lf you can stay away from negative yardage plays, you will be successful. We base the success formula for offense on the total number of plays. Take those plays minus the dropped balls, offensive penalties, and negative yardage plays, and divide by the total number of plays. lf the answer is 80 percent or better, you win the game. The total number of good plays is what you want to consider.

The job of a quarterback is simple. He has to let it happen, and not make it happen. We want to move forward. That is a concept you have to make your team understand. The cardinal sin at our place is the quarterback sack. We want the ball out of the quarterback’s hands in 1.5 seconds. That does not mean holding the ball until 2.5, waiting for someone t0 get open.”
