$7,305,785
$8,000,000
$8,694,215
$9,388,430

no,è orrendo 'sto contratto...ti leva flessibilità salariale...

New Orleans – New Orleans Hornets head coach, Monty Williams, is known as one of the young up-and-coming minds in the NBA coaching profession and he attributes that to his time as an assistant coach of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Williams is currently going through a rebuilding phase in New Orleans and you might say the Trail Blazers are doing the same thing. The Hornets have their coaching staff in place while the Trail Blazers' coaching situation is in flux.

Still, Williams feels the Trail Blazers' coaching position is a prime destination due to the people at the top.

“I just think when you have an owner like Mr. (Paul) Allen and you have those kind of resources, it's a recipe for success,” Williams tells CSNNW.com. “I'm the kind of guy I think coaches should be running to try and get that job. I think it's one of the better jobs in the league because of Mr. Allen, because of the city, and I love the Northwest. So I think the combination of all that is a great opportunity.”

The Trail Blazers have received criticism for their handling of their general managers and their elongated general manager search that took over a year to fill after Rich Cho was let go.

And to a certain extent, Neil Olshey's strategy to hire a head coach during the free agency period has sparked a debate, as well.

Williams says at times he hears the reports that surfaces out of Portland and the national media, but thinks a lot of it is unwarranted.

“I know Mr. Allen is a good owner and a lot of times, people lose site of that because they want him to do what they want him to do,” Williams said. “Larry Miller is a guy that I look up to and I spend a lot of time talking to him. With those two guys running the show, it gives guys like Neil and whoever they have as the head coach, a chance to be successful.”

The NBA Draft is one day away followed by the free agency period. Somewhere in between the two, the Trail Blazers' coaching search is expected to occur and when Williams was asked about potential candidates, he spoke on two prospects.

“I like Mike Malone. I worked with Mike. But you look at Kaleb, he did a good job under a tough circumstance last year,” Williams said. “I think either way they go, they're going to be in good hands. That city is special and I think Kaleb understands that. Michael would be a good choice, but that doesn't mean Kaleb wouldn't do a good job. Kaleb is going to work hard at it just like we all do.”

New Orleans holds the top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft and Kentucky forward Anthony Davis is considered by most as the consensus No. 1 pick. Williams isn't quite ready to say who the Hornets will snag come June 28, but does says the Hornets' organization is doing their due diligence in preparation for the draft.

“We're going to meet everyday and talk through it and make sure we make the best decision,” Williams said. “The way I look at it, this decision isn't just about coaching. We value the kind guys we bring into this city. We want these people to be proud. We spend a lot of time talking about guys we want to bring in our program and we want guys who can play.”

Two players who can surely play are Trevor Ariza and Emeka Okafor. The Hornets traded the two over the weekend to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Rashard Lewis and the No. 46 pick in this week's draft. Lewis is expected to be bought out.

This move only solidifies the fact that the Hornets are rebuilding and Williams doesn't refute that.

“It gives us flexibility,” Williams said. “We are rebuilding so we wanted to put Emeka and Trevor in a situation where they didn't have to go through that and it's going to give our young guys more time to play.”

Regarding the Trail Blazers, the next couple of weeks will be informative as we'll get an idea of the team's plan when it comes to rebuilding/retooling.

However and whichever ever route the Trail Blazers decide to take, Williams believes the organization knows what they're doing and says they'll have the right coach in place to orchestrate matters.

“Obviously coaching in the NBA is a privilege, but I think if Kaleb gets the job, he's going to do a good job because he works at it, but Mike is certainly qualified.”

BOOOMBA!

Tim Kawakami ‏@timkawakami
NBA source said yesterday that it's possible Austin Rivers goes to Portland at 6 and likely Barnes goes to GSWs at 7 or to Toronto at 8.
