Red Sox reliever Mark Melancon, summoned into start of the bottom of the ninth inning, suggested that he was slightly surprised by the rapidity with which he was pulled from his team's contest against the Tigers. Melancon recorded a hard-hit out, then allowed a pair of soft singles to Jhonny Peralta and Alex Avila to put runners on first and second with one out.

At that point, manager Bobby Valentine made the move to closer Alfredo Aceves.
"As soon as it got to be a jeopardy situation, I just wanted to close the door with the last guy who’s going to really be the closer," said Valentine. "I thought he had the stuff to get a groundball. He got a groundball."

Aceves hit the first batter he faced, Ramon Santiago, with a curveball on the heel. Then, with the bases loaded, one out and a drawn-in infield, Austin Jackson bounced the game-winning hit past third baseman Nick Punto and down the left field line for the Tigers' 3-2 walkoff win.

Asked whether it felt like a quick hook, Melancon acknowledged, "Yeah, it did. It felt a little quick. But that's not my job. My job is to get outs and I didn't do that. I'm not going to think any more about that. I'm just going to continue to try to get outs and get after it."

Beh dai Jon ha fatto bene e appena uscito Verlander l'attacco ha iniziato a produrre. Non m'è parso un cattivo inizio. A dire il vero cercavo di inquadrare maggiormente Valentine ma al momento ancora nebbia. Ci vorrà un po'. Avrei fatto entrare Aceves subito dopo Lester, ma ripeto, conosco poco gli altri tolto Morales. Immagino lo abbia tenuto in fondo in quanto miglior rilievo al momento.

Ma è un capitolo chiuso, il ciclo ormai era concluso. Ovviamente mi fa un po' di nostalgia vederlo confinato alla ESPN, ma oggettivamente l'ambiente era cambiato, ormai.

il Tito dello scorso anno non si può rimpiangere .. onestamente ..
Francona è sempre stato un tattico mediocre (credo più per scelta che per incapacità) ma aveva dalla sua un'ottima gestione dello spogliatoio .. almeno fino allo scorso anno .. il cambio era ormai inevitabile ..
