Q You were here (as offensive coordinator) when LaDainian Tomlinson was a rookie. He had 339 carries that season. Do you see Ryan Mathews carrying that much, or because you have Darren Sproles will Mathews’ transition be different?
A I’ve thought a lot about this, because it is different. When LT got here this was not a good football team. There were three or four guys you could really lean on. We leaned on him hard. We’re a lot better team now. Ryan is going to have a real impact, but I’m not sure we’re going to have to put everything on his shoulders like we did LT.
Q How many carries would you think Mathews would have as a rookie?
A That is so hard to say, because there are games that come up like the Tennessee game and the Denver game (last season) where you run the ball 40 times. I’d like every game to be that way. Unfortunately, it’s not. But I would expect Ryan to have 250 carries and 40 catches, something like that. That’s obviously saying Darren is going to have the same role he’s had.
Q You drafted a nose tackle (Cam Thomas), so will you continue with the rotation and just insert him in there?
A We are certainly going to give him the opportunity to be a part of that rotation. It’s nothing new. The better the football players, and if you can keep them fresh, you’re going to have success. The teams that don’t have a rotation probably don’t have as many guys they feel comfortable having in there. And if you have one guy who is dominant, you’re probably not going to rotate him as much.
Q You didn’t draft a cornerback. Is that because you like the guys you have or because there wasn’t one you could get that was better than the five you have?
A It’s both. We do like the corners we have. We have a lot of work to do there, but it didn’t fit. We did the things we had to do (in the draft). If one of (the picks) had been a corner, maybe where we took the linebacker or the safety, but the player that fit for us was a linebacker and a safety.
Q You mentioned the offensive line a couple of times during the draft. Without anyone asking you about it, you said you were happy with your offensive line. Was that a message for them, for the fans or what?
A It’s about our team. When you have a group of guys and someone is picking on them or they’re not being respected the way I think they should be, as a coach, and it’s probably the parent part of you, you come to their defense. And that’s not fake. Our offensive line went through a lot (last season) … I’m hoping to have a lot more continuity, and with continuity hopefully our production will improve.
Un paio di veloci considerazioni. Un pò inutile la domanda di Acee che insiste su questo paragone insensato con LT. La situazione è profondamente diversa, la squadra è profondamente diversa. Giustissima la risposta di Turner, si è oramai capito che questa è la squadra di Rivers e non si è mai chiesto a Mathews di diventare la prima soluzione offensiva e far ritornare SD al ground game come opzione primaria. Ryan ci permetterà di togliere pressione a Philip, rivitalizzare un backfield che negli ultimi due anni è apparso decisamente in declino e, spero e voglio credere, una variabile consistente ed efficace nel nostro gameplan offensivo ma non un pilastro su cui basare ogni partita che affronteremo.
Comunque sempre su Ryan pare che scelga il numero #33 anche se il #21 non è da escludersi. Ogni volta che rivedo gli highlights a Fresno State, sono sempre più impaziente di vederlo all'opera al Q.
Per il resto confido che Cam Thomas possa diventare qualcosina di più di un semplice elemento da rotazione, che quest'anno ha dato gran frutti, visto che le carte in regola per fare bene ce le ha tutte. Sul cornerback Turner mi trova abbastanza d'accordo, ripeto come non fosse così necessario e avrei visto di buon occhio l'arrivo di un CB tipo Arenas che potesse svolgere un bel ruolo anche negli special teams dove c'è il vuoto lasciato di Osgood, sempre in questo contesto è arrivato Stuckey che potrebbe diventarne l'ace.
Sulla linea e il mancato rinforzo di essa al draft spero che il coaching staff ci abbia visto giusto. Anch'io sono convinto che la nostra linea non sia più quella degli anni d'oro ma la scorsa stagione è stata veramente martoriata da infortuni, debuttanti in NFL [rookie o da anni di practice squad] e quindi mancata coesione, unità e solidità. Appena le ultime tre cose si sono sistemate, si è assistito ad una maggior intesa e le cose sono migliorate. Ricordiamo che Rivers all'inizio di stagione non aveva nemmeno il tempo di selezionare il WR che la linea collassava.
Ecco, un RB come Mathews dovrebbe adattarsi meglio ad una linea come quella che attualmente possediamo. Aspettando i training camp per i primi responsi.
