The Cowboys have reportedly put DE Marcus Spears, LB Bobby Carpenter, S Pat Watkins, G/C Cory Procter, and WR Sam Hurd on the trade block.

Stephen Jones Interview:

Is there a circumstance the club would trade up?

It’s unlikely, but there are scenarios it could make sense. You’re trying to get a pick that matches the value in your board. The reason we’re not gun-ho about moving up this year is we think the draft is very deep and you can get a good player by just sitting tight and staying where you are. In some cases when you sit at 27 you might not have a first round caliber player in your draft. We see 23 players in this draft who are true 1st round talents. In the past that number has been as low as 18.

It’s possible one of those 23 players there is at your selection, but you may not have any need there at all. Like the TE Greshem. So do you think that’s an opportunity to move down?

We certainly do. It’s a deep draft and there are players in the 2nd round that could be there that could be better value. But if you see a player you had penciled in as a high value that falls to you at 27 you got to take him and not get greedy.

You use a tactic a lot of teams don’t use because it involves juggling several balls in the air at once. You’ve done the “trade down and then trade back up” tactic. It’s a good draft for that.

It’s a good chance we could be moving. We did that with Mike Jenkins.

This is a tough year financially with no CBA in place. A lot of veteran players released already. After this draft if needs have been filled could we see another round of cuts?

It’s not out of the question. I would say we’ve done most of our moving already, and our players are pretty safe unless they are beaten out by a younger player in camp. We had 4 draft picks from last year that never played because of injury that are now competing for spots. But I don’t see a wave of cuts.

Buehler wasn’t deemed ready to kick field goals in November last year. What has changed between then and now?

We felt he needed an offseason to hone in his field goal kicking skills. We didn’t want him to work on it last year because we thought we had a great kicker in Folk.

Houston has two really good veterans in Rackers and Kris Brown. As camp goes on and one of those guys are available, is that your safety net?

The safety net is always to get a veteran at any position, but if we didn’t feel like Buehler we would bring in a kicker now and not wait.

You had 4 specialists activated every Sunday last year between the two kickers, a punter and a snapper . If you feel good about Buehler doing both field goals and kickoffs does that open up a roster position for a guy who just returns kicks?

A possibility. It’s a roster strain to carry two kickers, and to eliminate that allows a roster spot for a kick returner.

You don’t have a 5th rounder, would you like to pick up one up in a deal to make this a complete draft?
Sure, we’re in the mode right now to acquire picks. Either through manuvering in the draft or players for picks.

Dez Bryant: talent wise people say he is a Top 10 talent but he’s had some off field problems. Some teams have even taken him off their board. Is he still on your board?
Yes he is.

Does his problems concern you?
That’s why we had him in, to work through all these issues. No one at any level has done everything just right. His character is not in question here. He’s a good person and doesn’t have any issues you typically run into …….. with drinking or recreational problems. We’ve got to know him personally and we don’t see any reason to take him off the board.

So you don’t worry about criminal problems, but you might be concerned he’s a high maintenance player?
I don’t think so. I wouldn’t call him that.

Is he the best kick returner on your board?
He’s right there. You got to throw Spiller up there. He’s one of the top 2 or 3 guys.

I take it Miles Austin and Felix won’t be used next year as returners?
I don’t know if you can say that about Felix. It all boils down to risk vs. reward. He’s a dynamic kick returner and a dynamic player on offense. So it will depend on the risk involved.

Norm
Cowboys probably won’t draft FS at 27. They don’t like Mays and will pass on him, and they think Allen and Burnett are reaches there. They also don’t think any of the offensive tackles there are better than what they have. Even though Jerry has said he’s happy at WR, look at all the high profile WR prospects they’ve brought to the Ranch for interviews and workouts. They brought every local WR in for Dallas day. They’ve put a lot of work into investigating that position, look for them to address WR by Round 3 at the latest. The value at #27 may be defensive line, which would free them up to trade Spears later in the draft for maybe a 5th round pick. If I were a betting man, I would bet on a deal down. The Cowboys might find themselves in a hole in the draft. The club feels there are 23 first round picks in the draft , there is a chance all 23 are gone by 27 or one is left in a position you don’t need. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Cowboys make multiple deals in the 1st and 2nd round that gets them two 2nd rounders, an extra 3rd and a 5th. There are a lot of teams that believe the early 2nd to the late 3rd is firm with really good football players. There might be 35 with 2nd round ability and 38 with 3rd round ability.

JJT
I didn’t believe anything Jerry said yesterday. I’m not mad at him though, he’s supposed to lie at these things. He’s not completely happy with his WRs. He would like to add one, but he’s probably not going to reach for one. If Dez Bryant is there at 20 he’ll start hitting the phones trying to move up, but he can’t announce that to everyone. Reporters need quotes and TV guys need sound bites for their jobs, but we understand the dance that is going on.

per la sintesi:
short recap:

a) Cowboys have 23 players rated with 1st round grades

b) Dez Bryant IS on the Cowboys board and they consider him amongts the top return man in the kicking game.

c) Little odds that the Cowboys move up to get somebody, although certainly not out of the question.

d) Buehler(sp) has the kicking job and it's his to lose.

e) Most likely done with the roster in terms of cutting vets.

f) deep draft.
