Manchester United are lining up a sensational free transfer move for Joe Cole this summer with the Chelsea midfielder looking ever more likely to quit Stamford Bridge due to his failing contract talks.
Cole has been out of favour with Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti since returning from a cruciate ligament injury in September last year and was revealed to have angered owner Roman Abramovich with his £100,000-plus-per-week wage demands during talks over a new deal.
Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-time admirer of the 28-year-old England star and has spoken with the club's hierarchy about a move for Cole, whose contract expires at the end of the season, according to The People.
Sources close to Cole say he is excited at the prospect of reviving his career under Ferguson, a manager who has admired him for 15 years, claims the paper.
Cole's former manager at West Ham, Harry Redknapp, has revealed that Ferguson used to regularly inquire about Cole's progress as a teenager at Upton Park but Redknapp refused to sell the youngster at the time.
Cole eventually moved to Chelsea in 2003 when the East London club were relegated from the Premier League.
Ancelotti is also rumoured to be lining up Cole's replacement and is keen on Everton's on-loan American Landon Donovan, who has impressed since joining from the LA Galaxy in January.
