Questa è una grande notizia, per lui soprattutto, ma anche per noi appassionati che non finiamo mai di trovarci di fronte a tragedie che colpiscono giocatori di football universitari e pro. Forza Mark!

Porca miseria mi sono perso Dabo Swinney stasera...Ho saltato 3 partite in tutta la stagione (basket) della mia HS e quando doveva venire?Una delle rarissime volte che non c'ero, ovviamente :roll:
Il mio "american host dad" (che e'anche il preside della scuola) mi ha chiamato dopo la partita per dirmi che aveva cenato con lui e guardato la partita insieme...
Peccato. Mi sarebbe piaciuto conoscerlo. Ora per intervistarlo mi tocca andare fino giu' a Clemson...

L'anno scorso venne Steve Spurrier e io ero in Italia...oh non c'ho fortuna per questi incontri

Forse l'avrai letto anche tu, ma su Wikipedia ho trovato questo tentativo di spiegazione…

For example, the U.S. state of Michigan is, by tradition, known as "The Wolverine State," and the University of Michigan takes the wolverine as its mascot. The association is well and long established: for example, many Detroiters volunteered to fight during the American Civil War and George Armstrong Custer, who led the Michigan Brigade, called them the "Wolverines." The origins of this association are obscure; it may derive from a busy trade in wolverine furs in Sault Ste. Marie in the 18th century or may recall a disparagement intended to compare early settlers in Michigan with the vicious mammal. Wolverines are, however, extremely rare in Michigan. Secondo rumors Pittsburgh dovrebbe essere la 12esima squadra della Big Ten. L'annuncio pare verrà dato settimana prossima. Non sono fan dell'espansione ma come detto tempo fa, Pitt era la mia prima scelta di fronte all'eventualità. Vedremo nei prossimi giorni se si tratta di speculazione oppure no.

A me sembrano due ottime scelte, sia l'espansione che la squadra scelta. Spero che la cosa si concretizzi.

Domanda: si sa già come la cosa potrebbe ripercuotersi sulla Big East?

Avevo sentito di diverse teorie riguardo al nome...infatti pare che non ci sia una teoria univoca per il nome wolverines...di sicuro il nome associato all'università dello stato (es: nebraska, NC, california) è legato al nomignolo affibiato allo stato stesso e ai suoi abitanti.. qui ti linko quello che mi è sembrato il più plausibile..però anche da fonti USA, non sembra esserci un'indicazione univoca

It has been generally accepted that Michigan was nicknamed "The Wolverine State" for the abundance of wolverines that once roamed the peninsula. However, according to the Michigan Historical Center, wolverines were very rare in Michigan if they were present at all. It's not clear how this nickname originated, but there are two theories.

Some think the nickname was originated by Ohioans in 1835 during a dispute over an Ohio/Michigan boundary called the "Toledo Strip." This dispute became known as the Toledo War. Though Michigan and Ohio both sent troops to the area, no shots were ever fired. It's said that Ohioans, at that time, referred to Michiganians as "...as vicious and bloodthirsty as wolverines."

Michiganians, especially fans of the University of Michigan, take pride in being called Wolverines. Yet, the wolverine has never been officially adopted as the state animal. It is even unclear if this largest member of the weasel family ever lived in Michigan. Wolverines also don��t have a good image. Their nicknames include Skunk Bear, Mountain Devil, and Evil Spirit. One person even claimed that a wolverine "makes a Tasmanian Devil look like a sissy." So why are Michiganians called Wolverines?

The most popular origin of the nickname comes from the 1835 Toledo War between Michigan and Ohio. Since a wolverine has a reputation of being ornery, Ohioans called Michiganians "wolverines" as the two sides struggled over who owned the disputed Toledo Strip. Years later, the University of Michigan adopted the wolverine as its school mascot.
