-Buster Olney writes in his column this morning that the Phillies are going hard after a “set-up man/closer safety net” after Brad Lidge’s offseason surgery on a torn flexor tendon. Who could he be talking about?

J.J. Putz is an intriguing name on the market, as are Jose Valverde, Rafael Soriano, and Mike Gonzalez.  They are all Type-A free agents, as are Billy Wagner and Kevin Gregg.  The only real closing option that is not a Type-A is Fernando Rodney.

Rodney was linked to the Phillies earlier in the week by Ken Rosenthal and John Paul Morosi.

-David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News says that there are three third baseman he believes the Phillies are hard after: Adrian Beltre, Mark Derosa, and Placido Polanco.  Polanco is 34 and coming off of a Rawlings Gold Glove season at second base in Detroit.  He said he would switch positions if he were to move to a contending team.  Derosa is 35, and has Philly ties.  Beltre is the youngest of the bunch at 30, and has some pop from the right side, to go with a gold glove.

-Yesterday, Jon Heyman of SI talked about how the Phillies would go hard after Chone Figgins for the third base vacancy.

-Heyman also tweeted yesterday that eight teams are vying for the services of Derosa, who has been known to be as versatile as any player in the game.

-Murphy also talks about the Phillies attempt to bring back Chan Ho Park, who was an integral part of the Phillies bullpen in 2009.  Many believe Park wants to be a starter, but as we witnessed early in the season, that ship may have sailed.

J.A Happ finished second in the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year voting.  Chris Coghlan of the Florida Marlins won the award, receiving 105 points (17 first place votes).  Happ finished with a total of 94 points (10 first place votes).

In 128 games, Coghlan batted .321 with nine home runs and 47 RBI.  In 35 games, Happ went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA.

[Comment From airborneairborne: ]
Will the Phils rely on Happ to be in the rotation? He had some of the worst peripherals last year (FIP between Zito and Pelfrey).

Andy Martino:

As of now, Happ is expected to be a member of the starting rotation.  Next year will be pivotal for him.  The sabermetric community has noted how hit-lucky Happ was last season, but scouts feel that he holds a lot of potential and is still improving. We'll see who's right...

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Isn't it pretty irresponsible to not atleast learn about SABR style stats? This is a business and Ruben is giving up competitive advantage.

Andy Martino:
They are aware of that stuff, they just aren't partiularly interested.  You could make an argument that they should use all those tools, though it would be an easier arguement to make if they weren't winning.

The Phillies are targeting free agent Adrian Beltre, according to Randy Miller of the Bucks County Courier Times.  Money could be an issue; Beltre, 30, could be seeking a four-year deal. Additionally, Beltre is represented by Scott Boras.

Mark DeRosa, a personal favorite of Charlie Manuel, is still an option as well as Placido Polanco and Pedro Feliz.  A friend of Feliz says that he would like to sign elsewhere, possibly Seattle.

Chone Figgins
is still an option, and Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News believes he is a great fit.

Jamie Moyer has been hospitalized at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with recurring symptoms from his September groin surgery.  Dr. Michael Ciccotti, the team doctor, said that Moyer is not seriously ill, however the pain in the area where he had surgery has increased since the weekend.

Moyer, 47, is being evaluated.  “He’s completely comfortable and fine.  We’re just taking appropriate precautions and also wanting to do what we can to make sure he’s on track for spring training,” Ciccotti said.

The Phillies signed DeWayne Wise and Wilson Valdez to minor league contracts.  Both had a significant amount of major league playing time in 2009, but they will most likely spend most of 2010 in Triple-A.

Wise, an outfielder, is known for saving Mark Buehrle’s perfect game in July. The 32-year old spent most of the season as a defensive replacement.  He batted .225 in 142 at-bats with the White Sox in 2009.

Valdez, a utility infielder, batted .256 in 86 at-bats for the New York Mets in 2009.

Moyer Hospitalized

UPDATE (11/28/09):  Jamie Moyer is doing well after minor surgery.  Moyer had surgery to wash out a small collection of blood cells that could have been infected.

“The surgery is not likely to impact his rehab schedule and is likely to have minimal impact on his spring training schedule,” said Ciccotti.  Moyer will remain hospitalized until Monday.

Coste Joins the Mets
Our old friend Chris Coste is joining the rivals to the north.  Coste has reportedly signed a one-year deal according to Jeff Kolpak of the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead in North Dakota.

The report says that the Mets have given him a spot on the 40-man roster, but have made no guarantees about being on the opening day 25-man list.

Have to say, this one stings a bit.  Coste was one of those guys you’ll always admire as a Phillies fan, but going to the Mets is a tough pill to swallow.  Anyway, best of luck to Coste next season.
