tornando a Clark, Keisel e Reed

3. Terrence Cody

College: Alabama
Height/Weight: 6-3 5/8, 370  :shocking:

Cody is in his second year at Alabama after playing junior college football in Mississippi. Coach Nick Saban made Cody lose 50 pounds before he would allow him to play last fall. He was named first-team All-SEC in 2008. He has good quickness for the position and will play the run well, but is not a pass rusher, which makes him a two-down player. This is a massive man. He is a mid-to-low first-round pick.

Here we go...
LATROBE, Pa. -- All 80 players on the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster reported on time to training camp Friday afternoon at Saint Vincent College, and all who participated in the annual conditioning run test completed it.

This was not the case last year, as Casey Hampton was in poor shape and unable to complete the test to Coach Mike Tomlin's satisfaction. Hampton spent the opening week or so on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Hampton, under the scrutiny of nearly every onlooker from the media and coaching staff, didn't finish strong by any means. But at least he finished.

"I was very pleased with the running test,'' Tomlin said afterward. "Everybody was above the line (passed). With those things being said, we can get started. ... I was curious (about Hampton) and all the big men. (But) he did a nice job, as did a lot of the other guys.''

Tomlin also was not concerned with avoiding what happened to the 2006 Steelers, who finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs after winning Super Bowl XL. Instead, he said the club would guard against feelings of entitlement and try to be blue-collar and humble.

"All we want to do is start the process of building this football team,'' Tomlin said. "The way things went to open camp wasn't an indication on how the season turned out last year.

"So, I'm not going to let today's success be an indication on how the season's going to turn out this year. (But) we're going to proceed with guys ready to go (Saturday) morning.''

Tomlin and many other players were asked if Ben Roethlisberger's off-field situation, where the quarterback is being sued in a civil suit, would be a distraction or if his head would be on football or somewhere else. Roethlisberger was unavailable for comment Friday.

"I have no question about Ben's mindset or anybody else's mindset,'' Tomlin said. "That civil case is just that. It's civil, and we'll assume that he's going to handle that business in his personal life. And we're going to proceed on professionally. ... We're just going to focus on football.''

There was another issue discussed on the first day. A rumor has circulated through various message boards on the internet and perpetuated when a caller noted on a Pittsburgh talk show that Michael Vick was dropped off at the Steelers' practice facility sometime Friday.

"I don't know if he's in Pittsburgh or not, but I'm in Latrobe,'' Tomlin said. "And everybody else in our organization is, too. (But) I'm not going to address directly any potential free agents. That would be fruitless. The list could go on and on and be endless. But I will say that we'll be prudent and do our due diligence in terms of exploring people that can potentially help us win.''

Steelers wideout Hines Ward believed that Vick still could be a starting quarterback in the NFL. Backup quarterback Dennis Dixon welcomed the competition if Vick eventually made his way to Pittsburgh.

"He was a great player in this league, and it would make for a good competition for the backup role if he came to the Steelers,'' Dixon said. "But Ben is our quarterback, and I'm just trying to be the best I can be in case he gets injured and they want me to go into a game.''

The Steelers signed first-round draft pick Evander "Ziggy'' Hood, a defensive tackle from Missouri, to a five-year contract agreement worth more than $40 million with a $6 million signing bonus. Hood was selected 32nd overall in the NFL Draft this past April.

Running back Stefan Logan, a first-year player from South Dakota, will start camp on the PUP list with a mid-foot sprain during his training leading up to camp. The Steelers were aware of it last week and examined it Friday. He can run straight ahead, but has problems cutting.

Others will practice in a limited capacity due to various ailments. Center Justin Hartwig (right big toe) was injured a month or so ago, but he should be at 100 percent soon. Defensive backs Deshea Townsend and Troy Polamalu have mild hamstring injuries that occurred during pre-camp training, so they will take it slow at the beginning.

Tight end Heath Miller, who recently signed a six-year, $35 million contract extension with the Steelers, is recovering from sports hernia surgery. Miller also had the same procedure prior to be drafted by the Steelers in 2005, and that familiarity helped the club identify the problem in June and take care of it. But Miller still will start out practicing on a limited basis.

Darnell Stapleton, last year's starting right guard, has some swelling in his knee and also will take it easy in the beginning of camp. Stapleton will be competing with veteran Trai Essex this year, despite starting in 12 regular-season games, the playoffs and Super Bowl XLIII.

With Hartwig and backup Stapleton cutting back early on, Penn State grad A.Q. Shipley should get more playing time initially. The rookie and first-year player Doug Legursky should split snaps at center when Hartwig and Stapleton are out.

James Harrison, the NFL's defensive player of the year, signed a contract extension in the offseason worth more than $50 million. So, it isn't likely that Harrison is concerned about rising gas prices and filling up a big SUV or sports car several times a week.

Harrison is concerned about the environment, so he picked up a Smart Car from a friend and drove that to camp. The vehicle is quite small, a two-seater, two-door with a sun roof. But it packs some muscle, according to Tomlin, who joined Harrison for a quick ride and later drove the white car.

By the way, Harrison said that he wasn't supposed to drop into coverage on the play that ended with first half-ending interception and 100-yard return for a touchdown in the Super Bowl. He was supposed to rush the quarterback, but since it was an all-out blitz Harrison believed it wouldn't be a problem for him to stay back a bit to see what would happen. He said the Steelers had just been getting into the backfield "a little late'' earlier in the half.

The Steelers have two practices Saturday, 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the second one open to the public. The parking lots open at noon, and the campus is open at 1:30 p.m. The three side-by-side practice fields were impeccably manicured for the Steelers, and the fourth one, the lower field, was changed from grass to an artificial surface this year to ease problems created by inclement weather.
